Chapter 14

1496 Words
The head alpha and his dearest mate were at a loss for words, their emotions a chaotic swirl of fear and uncertainty, as Sam carefully placed Jay into their arms. When Sorin's running behind Selene as they emerged from the house into the dimly lit forest, looked utterly dazed. His steps were hesitant, his usually sharp instincts dulled by the weight of the moment. Yet, even in his haze, he clung to one certainty....Sam was capable of protecting Jay. If the worst came to pass, there were ways to summon the true-blood alpha within him, no matter the cost. While Jiun stood a few steps away, his heart torn between doubt and desperation. He wanted to believe in the head alpha, in the mate bond that was said to be unbreakable, but the sight before him was almost too much to bear. Sorin, the powerful and commanding alpha he'd always revered, now appeared lost, his broad shoulders hunched, his expression that of a child who had wandered too far from safety. What's happening? Elia's knees gave out as she let out a heart-wrenching wail, her trembling hands hovering over her son's fragile form. Her lovely son, the symbol of their love, their pride, their world, was now wrapped in white bandages, blood seeping faintly through in places, looking almost lifeless. Jake's chest tightened painfully as he took in the sight of his child. His alpha instincts screamed at him to protect, to heal, but all he could feel was helpless rage and despair. His voice thundered through the pack house, making everyone present bow their heads in submission. "Dani! Call the doctor, now!" Jake commanded, his alpha voice filled with authority and desperation. Dani, already sensing the gravity of the situation, had acted before the order was even given. "The doctor is on the way, Alpha. He'll be here any moment," Dani replied, his voice steady despite the tension in the air. Elia knelt beside Jay, her hands hovering over her son's bandaged face, too afraid to touch him but unable to stay away. Tears streamed down her face as she tried to rouse her child. Her voice cracked as she whispered, "Jay... baby... it's me. Mumma is here, my love. Please, open your eyes. Just a little, bub, please..." The little pup remained motionless, his chest rising and falling faintly with each shallow breath. Elia's hands trembled as she cupped her son's face, careful not to disturb the bandages. "I won't scold you anymore, I promise. I'll give you all the chocolates you want. We'll play in the rain together, Jay, just like you love. I won't even say a word when you splash in the mud. Just... just wake up, my baby." Jake knelt beside them, his large hands gripping Elia's shoulders as he tried to steady his mate. His voice, usually calm and commanding, was strained with emotion. "Eli, he's strong. He'll fight through this. He has to. Jay always listens to us, doesn't he?'' Elia shook her head violently, her sobs growing louder. "Not this time, Jake! He's not waking up! What if.....what if he l-leaves us?!" "He won't!" Jake roared, his voice echoing through the walls. "He won't leave us. No one is going anywhere! Not Selene, nor Jay!" The door burst open, and the pack doctor rushed in, his assistant trailing behind with a medical bag. The doctor, an older wolf with years of experience, immediately knelt beside Jay, his hands moving quickly to assess the boy's condition. "Alpha, Luna, please step back. I need space to work," the doctor said firmly, though his tone was laced with respect. Elia clung to Jay's hand, refusing to let go. "No! I can't leave him alone! I need to be here. I need to...." "Eli" Jake said softly, pulling his mate back gently but firmly. "Let the doctor do his job. We're not going anywhere. Just give them a minute, okay." Reluctantly, Elia released her hold, her hands shaking as Jake guided him to stand, wrapping his arm around her waist. He watched helplessly as the doctor carefully removed some of the bandages to inspect the wounds. "He's stable, but he's lost a lot of blood," the doctor murmured, his brow furrowed. "These injuries... they're severe. What happened to him?" Dani had been standing silently in the corner, stepped forward, his head bowed in guilt. "It was my fault, Alpha. I couldn't protect him. I should have been more careful and shouldn't let them leave my sight...." " Enough!" Jake's voice cut through the room like a blade. His eyes burned with fury as he glared at Dani. "You were supposed to protect him with your life! How could you let this happen?! Don't you know what would happen if Selene had arrived before Jay!" Dani fell to his knees, his head touching the floor. " "I accept any punishment, Alpha. I won't ask for forgiveness. But please...save him." Punishment can wait," Elia interjected, her voice breaking. "Right now, all that matters is Jay's safety." The doctor worked tirelessly, cleaning the wounds and administering medication. "He's strong, Alpha. His heartbeat is steady, but we need to give him time to heal. He'll need constant care and monitoring." Elia knelt beside Jay again, her tears falling onto her son's pale cheeks. "Did you hear that, my love? You're strong. J-just like your Selene, baby. You're going to get through this. And when you wake up, we'll be right here, waiting for you." Jake placed a hand on Jay's head, his thumb brushing gently over the boy's hair. "We're not going anywhere, son. You're our everything. Come back to us. Come back to your dad." The pack members outside the room knelt silently, their heads bowed in solidarity and prayer. The atmosphere was heavy with tension, but also with hope. The head alpha's family was their family, and they would fight for Jay's recovery as if he were their own. Elia leaned her head against Jake's shoulder, her body trembling with exhaustion and fear. "He'll wake up, won't he, Jake? I'll die if anything happens to our baby." Jake tightened his hold on his mate, his own tears threatening to fall. "He will, Eli. He has to. For us. For her. Nothing will happen to any of you." The hours dragged on as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the pack house. The once bustling space was now eerily quiet, the silence broken only by the faint rustling of leaves outside and the soft beeping of the medical monitor the doctor had set up for Jay. Selene and Sorin still hadn't returned, and it gnawed at Jake, a sinking feeling he desperately wanted to dismiss. Yet, no matter how hard he tried, the same ominous thought kept clawing its way back into his mind. Elia sat on the floor beside Jay's bed, her fingers clutching her son's hand as if afraid to let go. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying, but she refused to leave her child's side. Jake stood by the window, his broad shoulders silhouetted against the dim light of the setting sun. His fists were clenched, his jaw tight, as he struggled to keep his emotions in check. The doctor finished adjusting the IV drip and turned to the head alpha and his mate. "Alpha, Luna, his condition is stable for now, but the next 24 hours are crucial. He's fighting, but his body is weak and desperately needs rest.....and your strength. The medicines given him earlier were among the best for accelerating wound healing, but I need to know who performed his first aid. Itcs clear this was the work of a skilled professional. If possible, could you tell me their name?" Jake nodded stiffly, his voice low and firm. "Thank you, Doctor. Do whatever it takes. We don't know much about the doctor or medicine but it's from Black Moon Pack pack. If you need more supplies or help, let Dani know." The doctor bowed respectfully and left the room, leaving the family in a heavy silence. Elia broke it, her voice barely above a whisper. "Jake, what if... what if he doesn't wake up? What if..." Her words caught in her throat, and she shook her head, unable to finish the thought. Jake turned from the window and knelt in front of his mate, taking Elia's face in his hands. "Don't say that. Don't even think it. Jay is strong. He's our son. He'll come back to us, Elia. He will. He loves you so much." "But he's so small, Jake," Jin sobbed, leaning into his mate's touch. "So small and fragile. He doesn't deserve this. None of this! My baby doesn't deserve this!" "I know," Jake murmured, his voice cracking. "I know, my love. And I promise you, whoever did this to him will pay. I'll make sure of it. The whole world will see the wreath of Jake Vale.
