Prologue- Sold
On one of the mornings of the day in the village of Aysgarth - a town ruled by the werewolves. A young girl can be seen drawing out water from the groundwater well, dedicatedly. This girl has golden-brown hair cascading down her shoulder to her waist like a wavy ocean.
As the sun which was previously hiding behind the clouds escaped with its mellow effulgence, this girl had to cover her head with the shawl lingering near the handle of the well. She would occasionally wipe her porcelain dry skin as she felt liquid rush down her face.
Maybe her body couldn't be acquiesced with the sun or maybe she was just too unlucky that morning.
"Riana!"
"Riana!"
Towing the last bucket filled with water out of the well, the little girl grunted with her mouth closed. She latched her feathery eyelashes away from the sun. It was at that moment she caught the distant cry of her name.
"Riana!"
The girl named Riana squinted her gaze at the sound and there she found a girl three years older than she was, running barefooted down the fields, disregarding the baleful thorns over the grasses.
"Rosemary?" Riana murmured as she remained unmoving, her gaze following the ten-year-old Rosemary.
Unfortunately for Riana, the second she took the shawl off her head, the sun surged in for a brooding attack. Feeling intense burns on her skin, Riana quickly ran her hands around her pail of water on the wet ground and hauled it.
"Oh, there you are!" The ten-year-old Rosemary exclaimed. She lowered her chest to the ground, hands tugging the sides of her dress while she took deep breaths after the runs of three miles. Feeling much better, she muddled her words as she stared into the amber eyes of Riana.
"R-Riana, you've got to come with me. Let's leave this town together. Mother said so" Rosemary stated, eyes flickering worriedly. Unlike Riana's calm ember eyes, Rosemary's blue ones were shimmering under the sun in fear as if she had witnessed a horrifying scene that was tugging at the remains of her soul.
Rosemary and Riana are friends. Close friends. They shared every single detail of their lives. Though been a few years older, Rosemary was dumb, whereas, Riana was the wild type.
Trying to understand the incoherent words of her best friend, Riana dropped the pail of water and held the shoulders of the girl before her. She darted her eyes to the injury below the brows of the girl and a frown fell on her forehead.
"You've gotten injured, Mary? Where?" Riana demanded. The little girl was just seven years of age but she had authorization in her words. Living in Aysgarth had its merits and demerits. As children who had no say in the conversation of the adults relating to the governance of the town, Riana detested that fact.
She hated that everyone here had to be weak. Must they bow their heads to those animals in human attire and lose all integrity and self-respect? Must children wait inside till they got chosen as a mistress for one of these animals? Must we?
Aysgarth was that town - ruled by werewolves but imbued with humans as they call us 'weak'
Rosemary jerked her head as her injury wasn't important now. She had to take Riana away from this place or else...
Sensing the fear in her friend, Riana let her hands off the girl's cheek and asked earnestly "Why are you shivering? Did something happen?" Riana mouthed "You are trembling, and there's blood on your body!"
Rosemary's eyes harbored insecurity and she was being vulnerable. Something Riana so largely loathed. Taking such an attitude into consideration, Riana tossed her head with a tilt over Rosemary's head as she stood on her toes, but the latter was blocking her effortlessly.
"What happened there and w-why are there smokes over there? You are scared for a reason" Figuring out the situation, Riana's eyes widened beyond words. She lifted her hands and patted her lips to speak, but couldn't
"You! They!"
"Riana, please let's leave. They are bad people like you said. I saw them kill my mother and father. They even killed Brother James. I am very scared, please let's just run away" Rosemary whimpered sorrowfully. The grief of watching her parents and brother die before her was something that traumatized her.
"No! I am going there to give those bloody animals a piece of my mind!" Riana's brows arched savagely. She would not hide anymore like a deer. Her family is there waiting for her, and she was no coward to keep them waiting. If they were to die, they'd die together and if by chance they lived, they would live together as well.
Rosemary froze. She was speechless.
"Yes, I may be young but I will never let those carnivorous beasts destroy our town. I'll fight them off" Riana confidently spoke. She turned around to leave, however, Rosemary halted her with a pleading look. She was afraid she'd lose her one and only friend. No one in the town cared for her and her family the way Riana did, even though they were werewolves too.
They had been banished from their pack, and with no choice, were forced to live with the humans. This decision of theirs not only brought disunity to them but the deaths of multiple citizens who abhorred the fact that one of their terrorizers was staying with them.
"Don't be foolish! What are you going to do? You want to die! Riana, please listen to me. Those people there, they are not humans ok; they kill for food. You are just meals that'd satiate their anger and -"
"I am going there" Riana deadpanned, pushing her friend's hand off "I am not like you. Aren't you like them too?"
Rosemary looked at Riana with a bit of disappointment. Her heart was burning like a fury. She sighed sadly and gave her way to leave. That was what she wanted after all.
"I was just looking out for you" Rosemary muttered softly, her voice pained. She felt a lump in her throat and the way it was being stuck felt like she should stick her nails and claw it out.
Riana rolled her eyes, feeling frustrated. She said "I don't need you to help me! I am better off myself. I have my family with me ok and they will do every necessary deed to keep me safe. If you want to leave, then DISAPPEAR FROM MY LIFE.!!"
"Anna," Rosemary called. Her eyes pricked.
"Don't trust your family too much, they could betray you" She informed painstakingly. Her best friend wanted her out of her life, of course, it hurt.
The scorching sun didn't make it any better.
"I love you" And with that confession being told, Rosemary embraced her friend tightly before running away.
Riana darted her eyes in the direction her friend took. Why was her heart beating fast? Why were pains in her chest? Why did this liquid escape her eyes? What was this feeling?
Was it what they called losing a person very close to your heart, if it was, then she wished the agony would be gone sooner.
Tears flowed down her cheeks ceaselessly. Her whimpers twisted into heartbreaking cries that replenished the tranquil field. She didn't mean any of that. She was only frustrated that even when Mary was a werewolf, she was too weak. She didn't mean to yell and absolutely not to leave her.
-------
Meanwhile, in the main town where people lived in. There was a huge smoke blanketing the view of the cottages and huts. People were running helter-skelter and they were screaming. Homes caught fire. Blood was visible everywhere. By the side of the whole terror, a huge wagon and carriage more than able to contain a hundred people were seen. Huge men in the size and height of a giant were positioned at the front, some behind and others attacking the homes.
"Surrender the girls!" A thick husky voice thundered inside the smokey place, as there was a tint of threat in it.
"You pest must remember to always keep your sides of agreements! If you had, this town could have been saved" The voice continued. It came from the heart of the town, and there stood a tall man, murking in Alpha epiphany. He was straggling the neck of a young beautiful girl, whose eyes no longer held life.
He tossed the child to the ground and immediately an old woman with a tattered dress came running to the girl. She fell to the floor and carried the child to her arms.
"No, No, Odette, you are not dead! Not dead!" The woman screamed, lamenting over her dead daughter.
That tall man looked at the scene from the corner of his eye with a deep gaze. He looked away feeling his chest about to open wide, but he remained passive.
'Never will I have a peasant as my mate. Rest in hell'
"Hurry men, we have no time to waste. Collect the girls" The man instructed forgetting whatever happened.
"Let me have a word with him, please. My daughter will be back. No, you can't take the twins. I sold the other one, and not them! " The tall man pivoted his head to the irritating noise. He saw a beautiful woman, blonde-haired and Amber-eyed, talking or probably trying to reason out with one of his men. She could warm his bed.
Mrs. Florian noticed a hot gaze land on her and realizing who it was, she was very happy. Instantly, she pushed the foolish man before her and ran to the leader, her legs betraying her as she fell to her knees.
"Sir, my daughter will be back. I promise" She explained, hoping this beast would hear her plea. She had just witnessed how he massacred a child. She wouldn't let the same happen to her twins. Never. It could happen to her last child, but not her twins.
"Woman, you were paid a thousand gold coins for your child as we considered her beauty, but you let her escape?" The man was now angry as he thought about it. One reason he hated humans. They never kept to their side of the bargain.
"No! I never did that. My child went to fetch water from the well. She'll be back" The woman briskly reasoned.
"I have no patience, we'll just take your other daughter to replace that one, but for that, you'll return a hundred gold coins to me!" The man grunted, his voice deeper than a cave.
Mrs. Florian was scared that she began to cry and plead "No please, you can't take my child. I sold the other one"
"Mother! No, leave me! Mother help me" Mrs. Florian ran to the man harshly dragging one of her twins by her hair and causing pain to her. She felt the pain.
'That b***h! Where is she? Did she run away? She better not and get her stupid ass here'
"I told you my daughter will be back. Please wait some more" Mrs. Florian was begging.
"Mother, Shirley killed herself. S-She slit her throat when they took her. Mother, sister is gone. I am scared of these people, help me, please. Ahhhh!"
Mrs. Florian was stupefied and ran into their cottage. The sight to behold her was the dead body of her first twin. Shirley. Her baby. Nooooooo!!
"Riana, where the hell are you!!"
"Mother, what is going on outside and SHIRLEY!!"
Mrs. Florian staggered behind, as she felt pain and anger occupy her heart. She went towards her last child and slapped her hard on the face.
"You pest! Bastard! You caused this. Where were you uh? You only had a pail of water to fetch, why take so long? You witch!" The woman began condemning her severely. She hated this girl so much, though, she was her child.
Riana was shocked.
First, by the dead body of her sister lying on the floor. Second, the sudden slap from her mother, and third, the curses.
What had she done to have her mother look at her with hatred? She didn't want that. Her mother loved her so much.
"Mother, what happened? Why is elder sister outside with those beasts? Are they taking her away? I'll never let that take place and I'll avenge the death of Sister Shirley"
Mrs. Florian didn't reply, but took the girl's hand and dragged her out of the room to the presence of the men, who were about to leave.
"Sir, she is here. Please release my daughter" Mrs. Florian pushed the astounded Riana to the men about to fill the wagon.
"Mother, what are you doing?" Riana spoke softly.
But Mrs. Florian shot her a fiery dagger as if she was staring down at a mistake. Indeed she was. If this girl hadn't been born that day, her husband might be alive and up to date.
"What do you think I am doing? I sold you!" The woman roared out.
Death lingered in the air and the smoke coating the whole place, began to dissipate.
"Mother" Riana murmured softly, her soul about to leave her body "You don't mean that, do you?"
"I have had enough of you! What do you think? That I love you or consider you my daughter? Do you think you are worthy of that? My husband died all because of you. If you weren't brought out of the world on that day, he'll be with me and the twins. We'll be having a peaceful life as a family, but then you ruined all my dreams. You shattered them into pieces. I have been thinking of a way to get rid of your filthy self but couldn't. Then on your fourth birthday, these people came to buy you. At first, I was stunned and happy, but then they refused saying you were too young and until you turn seven or eight will you be taken"
"Mother, i-I-I want to hear no more. Please" Riana's heart was squeezed tightly.
But Mrs. Florian continued "Then, I began treating you differently. Bought new dresses, and always made sure your skin was as white as snow, even to the expanse of neglecting the twins who I love more than anything in the world. You are my accident. An accident I cry every day to rectify, and now it is happening" Mrs. Florian broke her eye contact with the girl and collected her other daughter from the men.
"But mother, you slapped Katherine for me" Riana moaned. She refused to believe her mother was that crude to do that to her. Selling her? Accident!? No! She refused to believe this.
"Oh, that! It slipped my mind"
*PAK*
"Mum" Riana held her breath as soon as the stinging pain entered her face. She clutched the sides of her gown - the one her mother bought for her, so it was to sell her?
"Mother, please. You are lying to me. I know I have been stubborn, troublesome, and frustrating, but please say you were wrong. Tell me you were wrong, that you loved me. I didn't cause father's death and you didn't willingly sell me, it was the situation, right? Just say that, and I will follow them"
Mrs. Florian looked away after helping her daughter get off the wagon.
She said "I must be the only mother in the world who hates her daughter"
"Mother, No!! Please say you were wrong. I love you. I love all of you. Please don't abandon me. I am just seven. Please" Riana screamed. She was crying miserable.
By then her mother was out of sight, and she was dragged into the wagon where other girls were crying for their family. However, out of all, Riana was the most shattered.
She was sold?
By the very people, she called her 'Home'
Rosemary was right? Mary, I am sorry. I need you now more than anything.
