Chapter 1
Lucas’ POV
Walking outside our packhouse, I started heading to my best friend Peter’s place. We are both 12 years old and mum said I could go to his house instead of to the mall with her, my sister, and my cousins. See, today is my little sister’s 10th birthday and the whole pack is celebrating. Mum, Aunty Vanessa and Aunty Lucinda are taking Elizabeth and my cousins, Helen and Josie to the mall first.
I’m Lucas Surry; son to Alpha Derek Surry and Luna Julie Surry. Mum is also a witch, which makes me and Elizabeth hybrids because we are half werewolf and half witch. We aren’t the only ones; my cousin Helen is as well. Her mother is mum’s sister and Gamma Robert’s mate. I think they said he laughed when he met her or something like that. They couldn’t believe two witch sisters were mated to werewolves. It’s very rare for other species to mate with werewolves. We don’t meet because we keep to ourselves. The Lillivan coven where mum is from, is near our border, so it really isn’t all that rare if you think about it.
The Silver Falls pack is our pack. Gram and Gramps are here too; they stay at a house near the edge of the pack. They had two sons; dad and Uncle Steven. He is dad’s beta and him and his mate, Aunty Vanessa, have a daughter, Josephine or, as we like to call her; Josie. Her and Helen are 10, like Elizabeth. Now can you see why I didn’t want to go to the mall with them?
I got to Peter’s house when Peter’s mum and dad ran out; “Lucas, you and Peter need to get to the safehouse”, his father yells, shifting in midair.
“We will hold them off, so you can get there” his mother added, before shifting too. I sniff the air; I can’t smell rogues, just something burning. ‘Lucas, you need to get to the safehouse. I have Lizzy heading there now’ Dad’s voice booms in my mind. I don’t answer, whatever is happening he’s handling it. He’s stronger than anyone I know.
Peter and I started running towards the safehouse; there were people shifting and fighting all around us. Something doesn’t feel right; I don’t know what it is. “Ahh” I yelled, falling flat on my face as though I was being pushed. There was no-one behind me. I must have tripped. Damn, that’s embarrassing.
I glanced over at two girls coming my way; it looked as though Helen had tripped too. Josie had her hand, dragging her my way. Her mouth is moving; I can’t hear what she is saying. “Something isn’t right” I say; I can hear my voice in my head. But I couldn’t hear anyone else. “Was there an explosion or something that knocked out my hearing? I can hear me; I can’t hear you.” I questioned, trying to push my hands on my ears to make them work.
Helen pointed to her eyes and then waves her hands in front of her, before pointing to her eyes again. “You can’t, see?” I murmured my question and she nodded. I knew something didn’t feel right. “What about you two?”
They start moving their mouths. I couldn’t hear them but they seemed OK. I saw someone from the corner of my eye approach the safehouse and I pulled the others down to where I was, putting my finger to my lips. “Shh” I whispered. “There’s someone over there.”
We sat quietly, waiting for the people to leave the safehouse, so we could get there. I don’t recognize anyone. How do they know where our safehouse is? It’s camouflaged. I see a man raise his hands; he must be a warlock. Holy cow! We need to get out of here before they spot us. I sniff the air; thank goddess we are down wind. “We need to stay behind them and get to Bluff’s cave. Helen; Peter will help you” I whisper yelled, and we all started heading in the opposite direction to the safehouse. What the hell is going on?
Peter put Helen on his back, and we started running as fast as we could towards the river where Bluff’s cave was located. It’s near the entrance of Silver Falls Waterfall and is quite hidden unless you know it’s there. As we were running, someone ran into me. I went to swing my arm, thinking it was one of the people I didn’t know. Oh, it’s Eden; “Edee, you can’t get to the safehouse; it’s on fire. We’re going to Bluff’s Cave”, I told her. She is saying something back which I can’t hear. I shook my head; “There’s no time to explain, let’s go, and then we can figure out what the hell is happening when we get there.”
We quickly ran to the cave and headed inside. I wish I had my camping backpack with me. I have a torch and some necessities there. Eden pulls out her phone and turns on her torch. This is why I want a phone; but noooo, mum and dad won’t let me have one. Hang on; I can’t feel them. Why can’t I feel them? “Mum, dad?” I tried to mind link. Nothing; “Lizzy?” the caves must be stopping our mind link.
Eden is yelling something at me. I can’t hear her; I can’t hear anything. It’s like the creepy silence in the movies right before someone comes up behind them. I quickly turned behind me, just in case. “I can’t hear you. I don’t know what happened. I tripped and then I couldn’t hear. There must have been an explosion or something my mind didn’t comprehend”, I explained to her, since the others already knew. Peter waved his hands in front of me, before grabbing Eden’s phone. I looked over his shoulder.
‘There was no explosion’ he types in a random message before deleting it. “Can anyone mind link? I can’t mind link anyone” I ask as everyone shook their heads. Helen says something and I raise my eyebrows in her direction.
Peter starts typing again; ‘she says she can’t feel her parents. I can’t feel mine either.’
“It’s too dangerous to leave here. Someone will hopefully come looking, and then we can tell them what we saw, or didn’t see in Helen’s case”, I explained. That joke must have been wrong; Helen started crying. Peter puts his arms around her and says something to her. I can’t be sure, but I think he likes her. Eww; she’s my cousin.
We wait around for hours, and my stomach begins to growl; at least that is what I think it’s doing. I can feel it twisting and turning, and I’m starving. I headed to the entrance of the cave to peek out. The sun is setting; I don’t know who is alive, if anyone. Josie and Helen told Peter and Eden. Elizabeth was following behind them and when they looked back, she was gone. Eden typed it in a message on her phone for me to read. I can still feel her through our family connection. I can’t feel mum and dad, though.
“Lizzy” I try to mind link again. Nothing; the cave is either doing something or whatever happened to me and probably Helen is stopping it. “Peter, can you hear me?” I tried to mind link him.
“Oh, thank goddess. Typing to you is slow. Can you hear me through the mind link?” he asks back and I laugh nervously.
“Yes, I can” I told him. “It’s getting dark outside. How long do you think we need to wait here? We have no food or water. Someone should try and get something soon.”
“I can go. We can’t ask the girls to go, there may be dead people out there, and they shouldn’t have to see that”, he says to me. I had thought about that too. I don’t want them to see everyone dead. I wiped the tear away from my cheek, hoping what we were talking about isn’t what happened, as Peter came to the entrance of the cave. “If I see someone that I don’t recognize… What was that?”
“I can’t hear anything dumbass. What was what?” I asked him as he shook his head at me.
“Sorry; I keep forgetting. I thought I heard a wolf howl in pain. I’m not sure” he said, taking a step towards the edge of the cave. I grabbed his arm and pulled him back. “Don’t worry, I’ll stay hidden and if I see someone I don’t recognize; I’ll come right back.”
He leaves, and I sit down and wait for him to return with food and water. I look out over the Silver Falls; it’s dark, but the moonlight is glistening off the waterfall. It’s very magical looking; “Lucas, I found someone”. Peter’s voice came into my mind. “It’s Beta Steven. I explained what happened and about you and Helen. He said he was going to get us some food and bring Lizzy back. He wants us to wait in the cave and not go near the entrance.”
Thank goddess; Lizzy is alive. I knew I could still feel our family connection. That means mum and dad aren’t. I wipe the tear away from my cheek before I head back into the cave. I need to be strong for everyone since I am the Alpha now.
I walked back into the cave and sat down next to the three girls on the damp floor. They are huddled up together to keep warm, I imagine. “Peter found Uncle Steven. He must be back from his meetings. He told us to stay in the cave, and he is bringing us some food. Oh, and I can mind link you” I said, with a smile. Inside, though, my heart feels like it was ripped out; knowing mum and dad are dead.
All three girls start talking at once, and I shake my head, pointing to my ears, laughing. “That’s wonderful. Did he say if he saw my parents?” Eden asks through a mind link.
“No, he didn’t. I’m sure he will fill us in when he gets here” I said back, hoping there was some good news. I knew deep down there wouldn’t be. The only good news we had was Lizzy was alive, and he was bringing her with him.
