Lucas’ POV
Two years. It’s been two years since I started to learn what it takes to be an Alpha. Two years of doing research into the enchantment that was put on us. I learned my parents visited King Isaac before I was born, asking about some information they had there. King Isaac had a whole bookcase of books that belonged to his grandmother. He wasn’t sure why she had them, but he offered to lend them to me, nonetheless. Between combat training in wolf and human form; business and running a pack classes; I studied each book,, several times.
I wish I could say I found something about the enchantment; I would be lying. I did find something about an enchantment; a name at least. I want to talk to grandpa about it before I get my hopes up. It’s not much, only a vague description; here’s hoping, I mentally cross my fingers.
“When’s your flight?” Kyle states, walking into my room, signing at the same time. I was starting to pack my suitcases when he wandered in. He never knocks on my door. Bruce would tell me if I didn’t see him and I often joke, knocking would have been nice. I think he is just lacking in sincere friends and makes himself at home with the ones he has. Most want to become his friend because he is the prince, and they can get something out of it. “Are you sure you want to worry about packing? You will be back here in a week anyway.”
“Nah, I’ve got to get back. I want to be there for Lizzy, Helen and Josie when they get home from school. They should be finishing their finals this week”, I explained as he took a seat on my sofa.
Yes, Kyle and I have become good friends; I trust him with my life and hope he trusts me just as much. It would be the same, even if he wasn’t the prince. I told him about Bridget and what she meant to me. He respects that I am not ready to move on. I don’t know if I will ever be ready. Whenever someone comes calling, he is there to send them away or take them out of my hands. Either way, I am grateful he has my back.
Talking about Kyle and women; he still has a different woman on his arm every few days, like the first day I met him. He explained to me why. He is the same age as I am and thought he would find his mate the moment he turned 18. He said his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents did. When he didn’t, he was pushed by some of the higher-ranking members of the pack to take a chosen mate. I’ve met some of them. They are stuffy old men who believe we should be the dominant race and do what is best for the kingdom. Having a fated mate by your side is the best thing for the kingdom.
His father commanded them to leave him alone. They do, but it doesn’t stop the hints and inuendoes. He told me once; ‘To get them off my back; I might as well have some fun and when I find my mate; I will give it all up, for her.’
“Josie, she’s going to be your Gamma?” Kyle signs and I nod my head.
“If she accepts” I responded, and he narrowed his eyes at me. Why does he want to know?
“What if she finds her mate and can't accept the Gamma position?” He questions and I raise my eyebrow at him. Does he know something that I don’t? “It’s just a scenario. I haven’t met my mate and it could be a possibility. Elizabeth or Helen could be a possibility too.”
“If Josie is your mate, then I will deal with assigning a new Gamma. At this stage, I can’t look at what ifs”, I tell him, and he takes in a breath. He really does want to find his mate. When I first got here, I didn’t want him anywhere near my sisters. Now, I would be honored if any of them were his mate. He is a good person. Him, Hunter and Jacob are all good people. If they need anything; I will be the first person to put my hand up to help.
“Did the book's dad give you produce any information on the enchantment?” Kyle signed, changing the subject.
I let out a long breath; “I’m not sure. I want to talk to grandpa about it first. Once I do, I will know more and then I can let you know.”
He moves his hair behind his ear. Hunter came up with that sign; it meant OK. I think it was his way of not wanting to cut his hair. All four of us didn’t cut our hair in the last year, so we could all do it without others knowing we were OK with what was being said between us.
We have a few more signs, mainly in a fighting situation. It’s a quick silent gesture to let the others know what we want to happen between us. Kyle, Hunter and I won a mock tournament against different packs around the kingdom a year ago because of it. That’s how we came up with a silent code in the first place. Jacob was too young to enter; Gamma Nathan entered me in Jacob's place. We had three different challenges to do over three days.
By the third day, we were leading by a large margin; we still would have won even if we hadn't done the third challenge. We did it; because it isn’t who we are, not to do it. Two royals and an Alpha? Not likely. Our silent signs were what got us over the edge and Gamma Nathan knew it. I think him, King Isaac and Beta Cody are starting to use them too.
There were some signs we decided not to use. For example, Jacob decided he wanted to grow a mustache. I don’t even remember what he wanted it to represent when he pushed his thumb and index finger over it. There was one problem; he couldn’t grow one. He isn’t 18 for another month, and he has been trying to grow a mustache from the day he turned 16. It’s quite comical.
“What are you thinking about?” Kyle signs to me as I pack some clothes into my suitcase.
“Our tournament and the signs we came up with” I said, heading back into my closet and coming out with more clothes.
“Like the sign for go left?” he signs, then does the loser sign on his forehead. “It put them off. They thought we were calling each other losers. This is why you should stay here. We work great together.”
“Aww; you love me so much you don’t want me to leave” I joked, pinching his cheeks.
“Get off me”, I read his lips, while he pushes my hands from his face and I go tumbling onto the adjacent sofa. He starts laughing; his shoulders are giving him away. “You’re not my type” he adds, signing in my direction.
“Maybe if I show a bit of tit or ass, you might think differently” I chuckled, pulling the top of my blue shirt down to expose a n****e when Hunter and Jacob came into my room. “Your cousins can make it an orgy.”
“We know when to come into a room”, I watched Jacob’s lips move. “Pass”, Hunter signed at the same time. “Dad sent us. He said he would be ready to take you to the airport in an hour”, Hunter continued to sign.
I got myself off the sofa and walked back over to my bed; “to answer your question; I didn’t know what time my flight was; your father booked it. In a few hours, I suppose”, I laughed, closing my suitcase and placing it next to the door.
“We might come with you, to see you off” Jacob signed, sitting down opposite Kyle.
“If you want” I shrug as Kyle and Hunter push their hair behind their ears. “As long as Kyle doesn’t linger on the goodbye kiss.”
He gets up off the sofa; “It’s you that will have to stop yourself from kissing me” he signs laughing. “I’ll be back in an hour” he adds, punching me in the arm on the way past.
“I’ll see you then” I called out, heading into my closet to make sure I packed everything I needed to. I am keeping some of the suitcases here and summoning them when I get back home. It’s something I have been able to do since I was 10 that Elizabeth and Helen can’t. Mum started teaching me and grandpa continued after she was killed. I can make items appear out of nowhere. Grandpa can do it too. It doesn’t really appear out of nowhere; I’m summoning them from somewhere else. It’s helped when I’ve left a book or pen at home for school. I would discreetly summon something from my backpack or locker.
“Hunter wants to know if you have packed everything you are taking”, Bruce tells me, and I glance around my closet one more time.
“I think so” I called out to Hunter and possibly Jacob. Not sure if he has left my room or not. I walked out of the closet and find Jacob had left. “What are we going to do, to kill an hour?”
“Mario Kart. I’ve got to beat you sometime”, Hunter states, setting up the game controllers. I’ll give him some optimism before I crush him again.
“Sure” I told him, grabbing a controller from his hand and sitting down. “Let’s do this.”
