The Run
Kaela had learned long ago that the night was crueler than people. People lied, people betrayed, people burned families alive, and called it justice. But the night? The night simply watched.
Cold wind tore through the forest as Kaela staggered between towering trees, every breath scraping painfully through her lungs. Snow crunched beneath worn boots already stained with blood, and somewhere behind her, distant howls echoed through the darkness.
They were still hunting her, of course they were.
Kaela tightened her grip around the torn cloak hanging over her shoulders and forced her trembling legs to keep moving. Exhaustion clawed viciously at her body but stopping was not an option. Stopping meant dying and kaela refused to die, Not yet. Not before she discovered why they were hunting her in the first place.
A branch snapped somewhere behind her. Kaela froze instantly. Silence swallowed the forest. Too silent.
Slowly, carefully, she turned her head towards the Shadows stretching endlessly between the trees. Her pulse hammered painfully against her ribs while icy wind brushed strands of dark hair across her face. Nothing. Still....
Something felt wrong. Her wolf shifted uneasily beneath her skin, Danger.
Kaela swallowed hard before forcing herself forward again, ignoring the sharp pain shooting through the ankle. She'd twisted it crossing the rivers ago, but there has been no time to rest... There was never time to rest anymore, not for rogues especially not for rogues being hunted.
Another howl pierced through the night, closer this time. Kaela cursed beneath her breath and broke into a run again. Snow sprayed beneath her boots as the forest blurred around her, branches clawed at her skin leaving fresh cuts across already bruised arms but she barely notices anymore. Paid had become familiar years ago, ever since that night. The memory hit suddenly...Fire, screams, blood covering stone floors.
Her mother kneeling in front of her with trembling hands gripping her face tightly. No, not now.
The memories came in fragments, always in fragments. Never enough to understand fully, always enough to hurt..
Kaela shoved the memory away and focused on breathing... In, out, Run. That was all survival depended on now, just keep moving. A bitter laugh escaped her lips. Funny.
There had been a time when she barely remembered what fear felt like.. A time before blood stained her hands, before she learnt how cruel wolves could be... Before the entire packs began whispering stories about the "rogue girl" who appeared and disappeared like a ghost.
Now fear lived inside her bones...
A sudden rustling sound exploded somewhere to her left. Kaela spun sharply....
A deer burst from the trees and disappeared into the darkness. She exhaled shakily. Pathetic.
Three years ago she would've laughed at herself for being startled by a deer. Three years ago she also would've had a family. Her steps slowed slightly as exhaustion finally began catching up with her. She needed shelter. Food. something.
The last proper meal she'd eaten was nearly two days ago, stolen from a small village near the southern border. Since then, it had only been cold rivers and whatever scraps she could find without getting caught.... Her stomach twisted painfully, Kaela pressed a hand against it and kept walking.
The forest gradually changed around her the farther she moved north. The trees grew taller. Darker. Thicker somehow. Even the air smelled different here, heavier, powerful.
Her wolf became restless immediately...Not fear exactly, Caution.
Kaela frowned slightly, She didn’t recognize this territory.
That alone was dangerous.
Over the years she’d learned every safe route rogues used across the north. Learned which packs tolerated trespassers and which ones ripped them apart on sight.
But this forest… This place felt ancient.
The deeper she walked, the quieter everything became.
No birds, No insects, Nothing....Just silence.
A cold shiver slid down her spine. Something was definitely wrong. Then she smelled it.
Wolfs.
Not rogue.
Pack.
Strong enough to make even her exhausted wolf retreat beneath her skin uneasily.
Her pulse quickened instantly. No.
Kaela backed away slowly, scanning the dark forest around her.
She needed to leave. Now.
But before she could turn, A howl ripped through the night. Very close.
Kaela’s blood ran cold. Another answered.
Her breathing stopped completely.
They found her.
Panic surged violently through her chest as growls echoed somewhere behind the trees.
Too many.
Kaela turned and ran. The forest exploded around her.
Heavy paws thundered against the snow behind her while branches snapped violently in the darkness. Wolves moved fast through the trees faster than any rogues she’d encountered before.
Organized. Trained. Damn it.
Kaela pushed herself harder despite the agony tearing through her body. Her lungs burned. Her ankle screamed painfully every time her foot hit the ground.
But the wolves behind her were gaining.
A massive shadow suddenly appeared ahead.
Kaela skidded to a stop.
A huge black wolf stepped from between the trees, silver eyes glowing beneath the moonlight.
Then another appeared behind her.
Her heart dropped. She was surrounded.
Six wolves emerged silently from the darkness, forming a circle around her.
Kaela backed away slowly, forcing herself to breathe despite the terror clawing at her chest.
Pack guards.
One wolf stepped closer.
Large. Dark gray. Scar running across one eye.
Authority radiated from him.
Kaela’s instincts screamed at her to run.
But there was nowhere left to go.
The wolf’s silver eyes swept carefully over her torn clothes and bloodied skin before narrowing slightly.
Then, slowly, the wolf shifted.
Bones cracked sharply through the silence as fur disappeared beneath skin. Moments later, a tall man stood before her, broad-shouldered and cold-eyed.
His gaze remained fixed on her.
“A rogue,” he said flatly.
Kaela resisted the urge to laugh bitterly. Obviously.
“I didn’t know this territory belonged to a pack,” she lied quickly. “I’ll leave.”
None of the wolves moved.
The man’s expression hardened slightly.
“You crossed into Blackthorne territory.”
The name hit her like ice water. Blackthorne.
Every rogue knew that name, The most feared pack in the north.
Ruled by an Alpha cruel enough to make grown wolves fear speaking against him.
Kaela’s stomach twisted painfully. Of all territories…
“You need to let me go,” she said carefully, taking a slow step backward.
The man’s eyes darkened.
“You’re already too deep inside our borders.”
Kaela’s pulse hammered violently.
There had to be a way out.
“I don’t want trouble.”
“That’s unfortunate,” he replied coldly. “Because trouble seems to follow you.”
Something about the way he said it made fear curl sharply down her spine.
Before Kaela could react, another wolf lunged from the side.
She spun instantly, shoving the animal away before taking off into the trees again.
Shouts exploded behind her.
“Catch her!”
Kaela ran blindly through the darkness.
Snow sprayed beneath her boots while wolves thundered after her from every direction. Her lungs burned violently now, exhaustion finally tearing through the last of her strength.
She couldn’t keep up.
A wolf slammed into her side suddenly.
Kaela crashed hard into the snow, pain exploding through her ribs.
Before she could move, claws pinned her down instantly.
A growl vibrated inches from her ear.
Cold air filled her lungs while the massive wolf above her bared sharp teeth.
The others surrounded her moments later.
Kaela closed her eyes briefly against the crushing exhaustion threatening to drag her unconscious.
The dark-haired guard approached slowly.
“You should’ve stopped running.”
Kaela laughed weakly despite herself.
“Running’s the only reason I’m still alive.”
Something unreadable flickered briefly across his face.
Then disappeared.
“Bind her.”
Kaela’s eyes snapped open.
“What?”
Two guards grabbed her instantly.
Silver chains wrapped painfully around her wrists.
The burn made her hiss sharply.
“Get off me!”
The guard ignored her struggles completely.
“Take her to the pack.”
Fear hit harder this time. Real fear. Because nobody entered Blackthorne territory willingly, And very few ever left.
Kaela lifted her head slowly toward the dark forest stretching ahead of them.
Somewhere beyond those trees… Waited the monster every wolf feared.
And for reasons she couldn’t explain....the thought terrified her more than death itself.
