Chapter 1
The bass of the music vibrated through Wendy’s body as she pushed the cart of beers through the neon-lit club. The atmosphere was electric and alive with energy. Multicoloured lights danced on the walls, illuminating the gyrating bodies of people lost in the rhythm of the music. The air smelled of sweat, perfume, and a faint trace of alcohol, creating an intoxicating mix that spoke of endless possibilities.
Wendy sighed, wiping her brow with the back of her hand. The uniform she wore—a short pleated skirt and a snug polo shirt—felt almost too tight under the heat of the crowded club. She adjusted her outfit self-consciously, aware of the occasional stares she received as she manoeuvred through the crowd.
Her coworkers greeted her with quick smiles as she passed by. “Hang in there, Wendy,” one of them shouted over the pounding music. She smiled faintly in return.
Her mind wandered to her mother. The hospital bills were piling up, and Wendy had no idea how she was going to cover them. The weight of her reality pressed down on her shoulders, but she forced herself to focus on the task at hand. She had no room for despair tonight.
As she approached the VIP section, the noise dimmed slightly, replaced by a more subdued but equally vibrant atmosphere. The doors to the exclusive rooms lined the hallway, each one marked by a gleaming gold plate. She stopped at the door labelled "VIP888" and hesitated, clutching the tray of drinks tightly.
Taking a deep breath, she knocked lightly before pushing the door open.
The room was luxurious, with dim lighting that cast a golden glow over the plush furniture. Sitting alone on a leather couch was a man. He was young, maybe in his late twenties, with dark hair that was tousled just enough to look effortlessly perfect. His sharp jawline, piercing blue eyes, and full lips made him the kind of handsome that turned heads.
Her heart raced, not from the loud music but from the sight of him. When their eyes met, there was an undeniable connection, a spark that seemed to light up the space between them.
Wendy froze for a moment. She had seen many attractive customers, but this man was in a league of his own. Even in his slightly dishevelled state, he exuded a magnetic charm that made her pulse quicken.
He looked up at her, his gaze intense despite the haze of alcohol clouding his mind. His eyes swept over her, taking in her uniform, her exposed legs, and her nervous expression. Wendy’s cheeks flushed under his scrutiny.
“Are you...my drink?” he slurred, a lopsided grin spreading across his face.
Wendy cleared her throat, stepping forward cautiously. “Sir, I’m here to deliver your drinks.” She set the tray on the table in front of him, trying to ignore how her heart raced when his gaze didn’t leave her.
He stood up, swaying slightly as he closed the distance between them. His movements were unsteady, his breath tinged with the unmistakable scent of alcohol. Wendy instinctively stepped back, but he reached out, his hand brushing against her waist.
“You,” he said, his voice low and rough, “you’re beautiful.”
Wendy’s heart pounded in her chest. She opened her mouth to respond, but before she could, he leaned in closer. His lips were dangerously close to her ear as he whispered, “Be my antidote. I’ll be responsible for you.”
“What?” Wendy stammered, her breath hitching.
Before she could react, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her onto the plush couch. She gasped as she landed next to him, his hands already working to slide her jacket off her shoulders.
“Sir, please!” Wendy cried, struggling against his grip.
But he wasn’t listening. His eyes, glazed with intoxication, were locked on her, filled with something she couldn’t quite place. His hands trailed to her waist, holding her firmly in place.
“Don’t run,” he murmured, his lips brushing against her neck.
Wendy shivered, torn between fear and an unfamiliar warmth that spread through her body. She pressed her hands against his chest, trying to push him away, but her strength was no match for his.
“Please, let me go,” she pleaded, her voice shaking.
But instead of releasing her, he leaned closer, his lips tracing a slow line along her neck. Wendy’s breath hitched, a mix of panic and something else she couldn’t name coursing through her.
Her thoughts were a whirlwind. She thought of her mother, of how much she needed this job, of the consequences if anyone found out about this. But all those thoughts blurred when his hand brushed against her thigh.
An unspoken understanding passed between them, their bodies inching closer as he gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. The soft caress sent a shiver down her spine. Moments later, he brushed his lips against hers, light and tentative at first, then deepening as they both surrendered to the magnetic pull.
After a while of pleasure, she suddenly pulled out of his arms.
“Stop,” she whispered, though her voice lacked conviction.
His hand stilled for a moment, and his gaze met hers. For a brief second, she thought he might listen. But then his lips curled into a smirk, and he whispered, “You don’t really want me to stop, do you?”
Wendy’s breath caught in her throat. She didn’t know what to say, what to do. Her body betrayed her, responding to his touch in ways she didn’t understand.
But as he made to carry on with the feelings, a sharp clarity sliced through her haze. She pushed against his chest with all her might, surprising him enough to break free from his hold.
“I can’t do this!” she cried, scrambling to her feet.
He looked up at her, confusion flickering in his eyes. “Wendy,” he murmured as if he already knew her name.
She froze. How did he know her name?
“I’ll take care of you,” he said softly, his tone so sincere it made her chest ache. “I promise.”
But Wendy couldn’t stay. She grabbed her jacket and ran for the door, her heart pounding in her chest.
As she reached for the handle, his voice stopped her in her tracks.
“I’ll find you.” he said, his tone laced with both promise and warning.
She didn’t turn back. She couldn’t. Throwing the door open, she fled into the hallway, the sound of the club swallowing her whole.
