The Begining
Odessa sat down on the grass in the woods as she penned down her romantic moments with Ryker. She had never been that happy; being kissed by the Alpha's son was more than an honor.
After eight years of crushing on him, he finally noticed her. She could still remember the soft, warm pressure of his lips on hers, the gentle caress of his fingers on her skin, and the sweet taste of his breath mingling with hers. She could almost feel the tender touch of his mouth all over again.
As she was about to pen down her next words, she heard a howling sound. She looked around but saw no one. Fear crept in, and her heart began to beat faster.
After a while, she went back to her writing and narrated how his arms cradled her. She smiled, remembering how he couldn't let her go.
“Aoooooouuuuuuu!” The sound came again.
Odessa quickly dropped her diary and stood up. She looked around in fear.
“If this is a prank, it isn't funny!”
A white wolf rushed out to her from behind; she quickly turned and positioned her pen like a weapon.
The wolf howled again.
“If you lay a hand on me, my father will find you.” The pen in her hands vibrated with the rhythm of her body's movements.
The wolf stepped forward towards her, and she moved backwards in fear.
It ran towards her, and she fell to the floor in the process of moving hurriedly backwards. She lay on the floor, shaking; she felt like that was going to be her last day on earth. She closed her eyes and waited to be devoured by her own kind, but she heard movements lope past her instead.
Her hands were still shaking when she opened one of her eyes. She saw that the wolf wasn't there anymore; she quickly opened the second eye to be certain, and when she realized the wolf had run past her, she had a sigh of relief and picked up her pen.
She grabbed herself up and dusted herself; the urge to begin shifting sucked in. She needed to be able to protect herself.
She heard footsteps emerging from the direction the wolf had run. Her pulse raced as she moved in that direction. She saw a young girl putting on her clothes. She couldn't see her face.
“Who are you? And what do you want?” Odessa stammered.
“Let me guess; you still have your pen pointing at me,” the young maiden said, chuckling.
Her voice was one that Odessa could recognize.
“Freya!!”
The young maid turned to Odessa and began laughing.
“That wasn't funny.”
“Surely it was; you should have seen your face... If you lay a hand on me, my father will find you,” she laughs.
Odessa quickly picks up a stone and throws it at her, but she dodges it.
“I understand your fury, Odessa; we are wolves; anger is our dominance.” Freya continued to laugh.
Freya, Akira, and Odessa had been best friends since childhood. Odessa was the youngest of them; she was eighteen, while the other two were twenty.
“When I start shifting, I'm definitely going to avenge this.”
“What if you don't shift?”
Odessa clenched her fists and bit her lips. “Everyone shifts on their nineteenth birthday.”
Freya walked towards her and calmly sat on the grass. “Not everyone.”
Odessa was dumbfounded; in all the stories her mother told her about shifting and what to expect on her nineteenth birthday, she never mentioned the possibility of not shifting.
Odessa sat on the grass as well; she was drawn to listen to what Freya had to say.
“When a wolf and a human get intimate and a child is born, we will never know if that child is human or wolf until it turns nineteen.”
“But both my mother and father are wolves,” Odessa reminded her.
“I shouldn't be telling you, but there's a rumor about your elder brother, Samson.”
“What rumor?" Odessa listened to find out more.
Freya remained silent for a while. She was unsure of what to say next, so she smiled.
“Come on, that was a bad joke. I apologize. Moreover, tomorrow is your nineteenth birthday; it is wrong for me to put such fear in your mind.” Freya stood and began dusting her ass.
Odessa was unsettled by her reply; she nodded her head in affirmation despite her worries.
“What's going to happen if I don't shift tomorrow?" Odessa asked, looking intense.
“Odessa!!!!”
Odessa stood up, and her heart began beating faster again. “I have not sensed any werewolf abilities in me; I'm scared.”
Freya's lips dissolved in a smile. “It can't be worse than Ryker rejecting you.”
“Ryker cannot reject me.” Odessa finally calmed down. “We love each other; moreover, the moon goddess told me it is my destiny to be a leader.”
Freya's eyes widened. “I don't understand.”
“The moon goddess visits me in my dreams, she told me.”
“The moon goddess,” Freya interrupted.
“Yes, she appears to me.”
Freya stared at her with her eyes widening in disbelief.
Apart from her diary, Odessa hadn't mentioned this to anyone; she wanted Freya to believe her; that was the only way she could freely reveal everything else to her.
Freya burst out into laughter; of course, she didn't believe her. Odessa felt like she sounded stupid. If her best friend couldn't believe her, she wondered how she was going to convince the rest of the wolves.
“What is funny?” her eyebrows raised.
“The moon goddess only visits Alphas, and you, my friend, haven't even had your first shift.” She slowly uses her fingers to move the hairs on Odessa's face behind her ear. “You imagine a lot that your subconsciousness has chosen to feed you your desires in the form of a dream.”
At that moment, Odessa saw a female child standing a distance behind Freya. The child waved at Odessa. Freya's eyes narrowed, seeing the way Odessa was staring at something that could be behind her.
“What are you looking at?”
Odessa remained silent, her eyes focused on the child. Freya looked behind her curiously but saw nothing; the child had departed.
“I will be back,” Odessa said, and she began to move in that direction.
Freya held her back immediately. “Where are you going?”
“The moon goddess, I saw her in the form of a child. She has something to tell me.”
“You’re seeing things that are not there, Odessa." She whispered, “Your obsession with Ryker is making you want to be so important; just so you could feel worthy of him, it was just a kiss.”
Odessa felt confused. She hadn't told anyone about her intimacy with Ryker. How did Freya find out, and who told her it was just a kiss?
She was about to begin her interrogations when they heard wolves howling. Odessa's heart began pounding. She looked at Freya, expecting to get comfort from her, but she saw fear lingering in her eyes. Her hands were shaking.
The howling sound came closer. It became obvious that the wolves were running in their direction.
“Freya!” Her voice trembled.
“Behind me, Odessa!” Freya said, and she dragged Odessa behind her.
The wolves howled as they ran into the woods; there were three of them. They stopped moving before Freya but continued howling.
Odessa held Freya tightly from behind; her fingers crushed Freya's arms.
“What do you want?” Freya choked out the words.
They howled towards Odessa. Freya turned to Odessa with her eyes widening, and suddenly the howling stopped.
Freya was amazed; she opened her mouth but was unable to utter a word. Suddenly, the wolves fell and shifted back to humans. Their naked bodies lay still on the floor with their eyes open.
“What happened? Who are they?” Odessa asked; she was no longer holding Freya.
“I do not know, but I think they are dead; they just died, just like that.” Her voice trembled in fear.
Freya looked at her arms and saw how deeply Odessa's fingers penetrated. She looked at Odessa's fingers, but they were neatly cut and short. Her eyes remained wide.
