Chapter Thirteen: Mate

883 Words
“Hello Jerry, I see, Bastian still had to send you. Well, we can make this meeting short. I have no intention of stepping out of this pack for the next three months. The people here love their alpha, and if I leave to visit anywhere, chances are they will revolt.” Leila said as soon as Jerry entered the room. “That’s not why I am here. Bastian understands that, it’s a wise decision, by the way.” Jerry responds, smiling. He gently spies her neck and finds the necklace resting right there. “Hmmm, then how is it possible they won so easily”, Jerry thought to himself. “So why are you here?” “Lord Bastian, want me to confirm that you have the right Alpha within your cell. That could be a doppelganger or a look alike, for all we know.” “Hmmm,” Leila thought to herself. “So what do you aim to do? Have you ever been in close contact with him before?” “More times than you can imagine.” he replied, squinting his eyes. “But I brought a picture with me to help you confirm it by yourself,” he added. “That’s a good idea. Let me go with you to the dungeon. Then, we can confirm together.” She said even though she was certain. After all, she had seen him five years ago. “No need, I believe you can go alone. I will be around the castle. I must check around to be sure nothing is amiss. Lord Bastian is really worried about your safety and will not forgive himself if this was a trap he led you into.” Jerry answers and takes a walk out of the room after leaving the portrait with her. “What do you think Kyle,” Leila asks her right-hand man, as she walks towards the window just in time to see Jerry stepping out and blending into the crowd of workers moving things. “Lord Bastian has more experience than both of us in matters of war. I believe his concern is genuine. Remember I had also voiced my concerns about how easily the battle had gone. I mean, we all anticipated the death of at least 30 of our men and they were all willing to come, knowing that not recording any death at all was simply a miracle owing to the fact that we attacked at the right time. However, it’s not time to let down our guard”, Kyle answered. Leila walked to the place where Jerry left the photo and picked it up. “ The fine Bastard,” she remarked. In the truth, the photo did justice to Dante's beauty. Her mind took her back to the day of the invasion when she and her men had entered to see Dante. First glance at him and she was surprised by how good he looked. He looked even better than she remembered. His eyes were still the most attractive she had ever seen and for a moment there she found herself immersed in them. Fortunately, Kyle was not affected by his charm and swung into action. Lisa had coiled within her when Kyle struck that first blow. Leila was worried at first what that could mean, but then her wolf had been acting all funny that day, so she brushed it aside as not important. Lisa had remained quiet since that day. Only showing in her mind's eye whenever something seemed off to Leila, but never speaking a word. “We need to go down to his prison chamber”, Leila informed Kyle as she came out from her reverie. She was going to ascertain if she had the right person in her claws. “Have they been served any meal today?” Leila asked the Jailor stationed at the main entrance. She had instructed all the prisoners of war to be served twice a day. However, prisoners like Justin and Dante were tortured daily alongside their meals. “Yes, Alpha,” they have been fed. With this assurance, Leila walked the flight of stairs leading into the dungeon. She was halfway there when she felt Lisa resurface in her mind. “I thought you were not coming back again” Leila commented while physically rolling her eyes. “Shhhh,” Lisa replied. She seemed so excited that Leila worried something must be wrong with her. It was at that moment a beautiful smell hit her nostrils and wafted into her mouth. It smelt like freshly cut wood and rain, with a mix of cinnamon. Leila was confused for a moment, forgetting what brought her and tracing the smell to see where it came from. Kyle did not find anything suspicious, seeing as they were going along the normal route to their initial destination. So neither he,nor Leila was prepared for what came next when they stood in front of Dante’s holding cell. “Mate," Dante growled. his eyes turning two shades deeper as they felt the pull of fate or perhaps the moon goddess binding their wolves together and it took everything in Leila, including years of hard training, to not change in that very moment and mark him as hers.
