1985 Marseille, France 10 year old Christian Dumont was admitted in the hospital again, his parents were rich people and did not mind using all their money to keep their only child alive. This was the 5th time already this year that their son Christian was to receive a blood transfusion, for some reason that the doctors were yet to discover his heart was not pumping enough blood round his body. The boy’s body always lacked blood and as such he was always weak and could not live like other normal children, he was quiet, he was shy and he was always indoors because his parents feared for his safety. He was still a child but had already experienced what it was like to be lonely because even though his parents loved and cared for him, he made no friends of his own and of his age because of his health condition. Mr. and Mrs. Dumont were both from the old French aristocracy and had an abundance of wealth because they had used that family wealth left for them from way back to go into the real estate business. They had property across not just their home country France but across Europe, they were willing to use it all for their son and ready to give him all their time and attention till he finally got better. They had decided to move their son to the United States to get him checked by a specialist who they had researched and were sure could help them out. They flew to Atlanta directly from Paris and had their son admitted in the institute in the city were the specialist worked, for the first time in a while this small family of three felt like things could be normal soon. The Dumont’s landed in USA the very next week and took Christian to the Institute of Advanced Medicine in Atlanta. Christian was admitted and connected to so many machines that anyone seeing the tubes attached to him would have thought he was a machine as well, Unknown to them the head of the Institute was also the newly appointed Director of the Hunters Guild and close friends to another wealthy parent taking care of his only child who he had adopted in Europe and was now living in the states with. The specialist who was going to try to make Christian Dumont better and live his life like any other normal boy his age happened to be Mr. Michael Callahan, the only member of the great Callahan family that was still alive and the new Director of the secret organization that worked in the shadows with world governments to protect humanity from creatures with celestial essence that had killed or attacked humans and were now considered enemies of humanity, he was the new head of the Hunters Guild globally. From his a small base in the city of Atlanta, the now older Michael controlled most of the affairs of the Guild with patience and a strong will. 1985 Atlanta, Georgia USA Normal earthly plane The journey from Louisiana to Georgia was not a very long one when embarked on by flight and took about one hour and some minutes but the experienced hunter, business tycoon and still learning single parent of a very precocious child had decided to go on a road trip with his son for the first time, the main reason for the trip was also related to the 11 year old boy but he also enjoyed spending time with him. Valerian Cacciatore had managed to stay awake for all the hours of driving just sitting there quietly and staring out the window looking neither excited nor bored, he was certainly always very calm and composed for someone his age and his father Eric had noticed that from early on because even as a baby Valerian never cried and seemed always at peace with everything. His son was by no means socially awkward. The boy was good at conversations, funny and very smart but was only friendly to certain people. He had an air of nobility and unerring calm about him that Eric had come to the conclusion was due to the fact that he had been spoilt by him from when he was little, he had given his son a grand life and had really spoilt him. He was a gentleman though and very respectful to everyone and Eric was proud of that, he had spoilt him with wealth but had made sure he was growing up as a good person who respected laws and authority to a level. Their road trip was a direct trip from New Orleans to Atlanta and as Eric looked at the 1983 Seiko speed master chronograph 7A28-7000 watch on his wrist and saw that it was already 2pm he knew they had spent almost 7 hours on the road because they had started the journey as early as 7am. They had spent 7 hours on the road and his son had spoken to him for mere minutes between their stop for gas and some snacks. The boy had used more than 5 hours to simply look out the window as though studying the road they used and the changes in scenery as they progressed. He had a wonderful relationship with his son and had spent more time with his boy than anyone else since he found him as a baby in a forest and adopted him. They were close, really close after spending 10 years together and being an inseparable father and son duo. Eric had thought Valentine to play football, had thought him to enjoy fine music and thought him about the varieties of food as well as teaching him all the other things a father was meant to teach a son. “Hey Val, we are in Atlanta already.” Eric said smiling at his son while still keeping an eye on the road ahead. “I know Dad, I saw the sign earlier.” His son answered calmly without even sparing a glance at his still smiling father. The boy was already calmer and more observant than most teenagers at just eleven years of age. Eric who was not at all surprised by his cold reply was laughing hard now; Val always made him realize he was getting old now. Eric had nothing more to say since he could sense his son had his attention on something else, he would snatch that attention back in a second, and he knew exactly what to do. Eric looked over at Valentine with his eyes hidden from the sunlight beaming through the window of the passenger’s seat by his baseball cap. The boy had always really liked the feel of sunlight on his face and Eric knew that as well which was why he wasn’t asking him to seat back properly on his seat and avoid the very visible rays of light shining across his face now. “Would you like us to go see today or just wait till tomorrow?” Eric asked without looking over at Val now but noticing the young man turn to face him slowly now. “We should see him today; it has been a long time since we saw him. It has been almost a year.” Val responded still calm but with more passion in his voice this time and Eric heard it; the older man was smiling now as he drove through the beautiful and always busy city. He picked up his handset from the groove between their seats, he had spent more than 2,000 dollars on it and although it was the size of a brick and not really mobile, he liked being able to speak to people from distances without having to see any wires. He dialed in a number and then gave the phone to Val still not looking over at his son. “When he picks tell him we’ll come over to meet him at the mansion after we’ve rested. We should be there by 6pm.” Eric instructed him quickly as he knew Val was smart enough to understand and assimilate what he was hearing in seconds, the boy’s mind was always working. The call got connected at the other end and the voice came in from the other end. “Hello, are you in my city already?” asked the voice with a short laugh, Valentine recognized his Uncle’s voice instantly. “Uncle Michael, Dad said to tell you we’ll be over at the mansion to see you later today. Probably by 6pm.” Valentine said directly without even greeting his uncle and close friend, he was obviously angry at the older man for not visiting him back in Louisiana this whole time. “I have those Danish cookies you love here with me; I bought them immediately I heard you would also be coming over this time. I hope you still like them.” Michael asked over the phone and was surprised by the answer the child gave. “You know very well I still like them or you would have asked me first before buying them, my guess is that Dad already told you. If they are nice then I might consider not being angry with you, Uncle Michael.” Valentine said now smiling a bit with the phone still on his ear, he knew he had surprised the older man and he enjoyed doing that from time to time. “You get smarter every single day Val,” Michael said bursting into loud laughter this time “I promise the cookies are excellent. I had a few for myself.” He added and then the phone went silent for some seconds before Michael came back on. “I have an emergency here at the Institute so I definitely won’t be home by 6, please tell Eric to just come over to the Institute later instead. Don’t worry I have the cookies here with me. I have to go now Val, it would be great to see you later.” Michael said sounding in a rush and then the loud single beep sounded after which the phone became dead silent again. Michael must have had something serious to do at the moment Eric thought to himself, he knew Michael would never end a call unless there was something more important to attend to. He would meet his friend later, what they had to discuss was definitely important, very important.
