Mr. and Mrs. Dumont, I can assure you that your son is fine and will only get better for now. Allow us monitor him and get some tests done while you both try to get something to eat. Get into town, eat some food and then get some good night’s sleep. Christian is going to be very okay with us here, alright?” Dr Michael asked and watched the tired looking couple give him a nod of agreement, they had barely just met this American 2 days back but were already trusting him, he had an aura of calm leadership about him that always made the currently less than calm couple feel very calm. They were wealthy but their wealth had done nothing to stop their only son and in fact only child from being hospitalized for more than thrice already just this year alone, it was a difficult way for a parent to live, living with the constant fear of instantly losing such a good, wonderful and sweet child before he even became a teenager. They both hoped for the best though, they had come to the states for a solution and were still hoping for one with all their heart.
The Dumont’s had left the institute now and had left Christian under the supervision of the Doctor, Michael Callahan. Michael had placed the frail boy in a room with an adjoining room so he could monitor him at all times, at least through this night so he could watch young Christian Dumont himself and make sure nothing happened to him especially now that his parents had trusted him enough to take care of their son while they tried to get few hours of shut eye. The room was set up in such a way that while Christian lay quietly on his bed, the Doctor could easily monitor his condition from an adjoining room that was only separated by a glass mirror. From the adjoining room, Michael could watch Christian through the glass but Christian could not see beyond the glass. It was made to help monitor patients without them being aware so that the patients who needed such 24/7 attention would get this attention from the doctors monitoring them without feeling weird or uncomfortable. Michael sat in the room watching the young Christian Dumont when he heard a soft knock on the door and knew his visitors had arrived, he walked to the door and swung it open and saw the familiar faces smiling at him.
The Director and Eric shared a firm handshake and Michael then went down with the intention of hugging his young friend. Valerian simple gave his uncle and older friend a shake of his head and then stretched out his hand as well, clearly indicating that he also wanted to shake hands instead of hugs causing both Michael and Eric to laugh wildly for a bit. They were shocked by how confident the boy could be most times, luckily the room was sound proof so none of their loud laughter reached the patient still be monitored in the next room. Valerian walked passed Michael after they had shook hands and was standing at the glass film separating the room from the next, he could see a boy almost his age with tubes coming and wires connected to him and different monitors linked to these tubes and wires clearly done by the institute so they could monitor him. He was watching the other boy from across the glass when Michael called out to him from behind his desk. “Hey Valerian, catch.” Was all he heard when he turned and saw the pack flying towards him already, he jumped few meters up and caught the packet in one hand before turning to smile at Michael because he got a whiff of the scent and knew instantly these were his cookies. Eric had walked to the desk as well and was sitting already when Valerian caught the pack; he clapped for his son loudly now impressed by how sharp his reflexes were because even an adult would have had a hard time catching something in mid air that had been tossed at them before they were called out to catch it. Valerian paid no attention to the clapping though and was back looking through the glass at the boy lying on the other side of it.
“Is that your emergency patient?” Valerian asked turning to look at Michael.
“Yes Val, that’s my emergency patient. His name is Christian and he is here so I can try to make him feel better. He is just a year younger than you but unlike you his body is not so strong right now. His blood keeps drying up leaving him weak most of the time, this is the sixth time already he will be receiving blood just this year. He is a really strong kid though, a nice kid who respects everyone, he hardly talks though. His parents said he has no friends because of how much time he spends in the hospital and away from school.” Michael explained with obvious affection for his patient in his voice. Valerian was walking across the glass now and was at the door leading to the patient’s room on the other side of the glass divider already. He had his hand on the door knob before turning to look at his father and Mr. Michael.
“Is it okay if I go in and share my cookies with Christian? I think having someone his age around to talk to for a bit would make him happy.” Valerian asked with his hand already turning the knob. He was clearly going into the room regardless of the reply his Dad or Uncle was about to give. Eric was touched by how nice his son was being right now because he knew Valerian was very selective about whom he wanted to be friends with right from his first days in school. The boy was way more matured than was expected of someone his age.
“Okay then Val, you can go in and say hi. I actually have something important to discuss with your Dad so you can stay in for as long as you want. You can share your cookies if you wish too, Christian may be attached to a lot of machines but those are just to help keep his blood level stable till we give him more blood tomorrow.” Michael said and got a smile from Valerian for his reply; immediately he was done speaking Valerian turned the knob and pushed the door open. Stepping through the door and closing it behind him quietly. Eric and Michael watched him from the other side of the glass divider as he walked towards Christian with a friendly look on his face and in his grey eyes.
