Christian Dumont from his position on the bed was still able to move his upper body and could tilt his head to an angle in order to watch whoever had come through the door and that was what he was doing. He watched the boy walking to him from the door with a box in his right hand and a genuine smile on his face, he smiled as though he were visiting an old friend which was weird to Christian because he had never seen this face before, this was the face of a complete stranger but it carried the look of a very close friend and Christian felt happy about it. Christian sat up on the bed now and propped his back on the pillow so he could sit up and see this person approaching him, Michael watching this interaction from the other side of the glass was already surprised by what was happening because Christian had not had enough strength to sit up by himself for days but he had done it effortlessly just now.
Christian kept looking at the boy’s face and knew instantly that this boy was either the same age as him or older than him by at a year or two years at the maximum. The aura around the boy however made him feel like he was being approached by someone way older than he was, this kid clearly didn’t carry himself like a kid. He was standing next to his bed now just there smiling at him and then extending his right hand for a handshake after moving the box that had been in his right hand earlier into his left hand. “Hi, I am Valerian Cacciatore. Nice to meet you” Valerian said and watched as the pale boy sitting up on the bed with wires and tubes connected to different parts of his body slowly but steadily stretched his right hand and shook his hand. Valentine noticed how firm and strong the boy’s grip was and knew instantly that he was strong even though he was sick. His new friend answered him in a low but clear voice.
“I am Christian Dumont, nice to meet you too.” Christian said
“You don’t sound like most young boys here.” Valerian said, asking Christian a question indirectly.
“I just got to the states some days ago, I am actually from France.” Christian replied and was surprised by how excited Valerian looked now.
“Wow that means you can speak French?” Valerian asked
“Oui, Je parle française” Christian replied. “It means yes I speak French” Christian added with a soft laugh and Valerian joined in.
“You can speak two languages, that’s really cool Christian. Do you mind if I sit on your bed while we talk, I’ll make sure not to touch anything?” Valerian asked clearly not wanting to touch any or tubes. Christian’s reply was a nod of affirmation and Valentine was not going to ask for a second time. He was taller than most boys his age and was sitting beside Christian on the tall bed in no time and with no trouble.
“I brought some cookies so we could share, I heard from my friend that you’re not feeling really fine right now.” Valerian said still with a smile. Eric was watching his son with his eyes wide with surprise; he had not seen his son smile this much or is this nice to anyone else his age. He was really going out of his way to be friends with this kid Eric thought to himself still in shock. Valerian gave some cookies to Christian and they both ate the cookies quietly for some time.
“My mom won’t like this, but these are the nicest cookies I’ve ever had. Thank you Valerian” Christian said with his mouth full of cookies and a beaming smile.
“You’re welcome; it’s a good thing you can still eat and talk this well. I hope you get well soon so we can go the large water park here in Atlanta, I really want to go there soon.” Valerian said directly.
“The doctor says I need more blood so I’ll be weak most of the time but I can still talk and eat when I force myself to. Once I get some blood I will get better, then we can go to the park. I haven’t been to any park with a friend before; I have never been to any park at all.” Christian said with obvious excitement in his eyes, voice and shining on his face.
“Get better then, I’ll definitely make my Dad take us there when you’re fine. He won’t say no to me playing with friends.” Valerian said knowing full well his Dad was probably watching them from the other side of the glass that looked like a giant normal mirror from this room instead of the transparent glass it was from the room his uncle Michael Callahan was using this night.
“Who is this friend that told you I was sick?” Christian asked now curious.
“It was my uncle, your doctor. He is not really my uncle but he is close friends with my dad, I think he might be my Dad’s best friend. Do you have a best friend?” Valerian explained and then followed up with a question, the young man was always keenly searching for something.
“No, I don’t have a best friend yet. I have always needed a new kind of treatment because I lack blood constantly and fall sick again.” Christian explained with a weak smile on his pale face.
“We can be best friends; you have to get better though. That way we can make many other friends and have a group of friends.” Valerian said with a confident look in his eyes “If I could also give blood to you so you could feel better, I would do that.” Valerian added
“I think you’re too young for that” said Christian as both boys shared a laugh again. They were like best friends already and the older men watching them both from behind the glass could not hide how surprised and proud they were of both boys. Valerian because he was trying to be best friends with someone who he heard has no friends and Christian because he was also trying to make a friend despite not having one in years.
They watched both boys as they continued their discussion and even branched into various topics ranging from cars, food, sports and even music. Eric knew exactly why he had come to see the Director of the Hunters Guild and it was time for him to state his reason clearly, Valerian had just made him totally sure of his decision with his actions today. “Michael, I think this would be the best time to tell you why I came to see you today.” Eric said blandly now turning from the glass and facing Michael squarely. “Michael, I want Ethan in the Hunters Guild as an understudy to me and a recruit by next summer.” Eric said confidently while holding the Director’s stare and shock, the shock on his face was not as much as Eric predicted though.
“Eric Valentine is already part of the Guilds summer camps. That should be sufficient for him at least for now.” Michael said now looking at his desk and not at his friend.
“We both know he has decimated the training at the summer camps, he still takes it as a normal camp even after all the self defense classes and training on using weapons. He does not know what the Guild stands for because he thinks the stories of celestial clans are just mere stories.” Eric said calmly and took in a loud breath. “I want him to join the Guilds actual recruitment program, let him be shown a Kravian at full moon, a vampire in crazy crave for blood or a witch or wizard doing an actual spell. Show him what will make him believe so I can believe his actual training myself. You know I am the best possible trainer, imagine him training with me from 12 till he is 18, he will be the most dangerous hunter ever and your greatest asset against those monsters.” Eric said clearly stating his intentions. He loved his son and wanted him totally capable of protecting himself and those he would care about in future, he didn’t want to lose his son like he lost Alice.
“Eric, he is still too young. The time is not right for this; let him live a normal life for some more time.” Director Michael Callahan said looking into his friend’s eyes now from across the table.
“Okay I will let you decide when he graduates from the recruitment program. For now I will keep training him by myself and make him better than any recruit you will get in the next decade. If you don’t want me to try and bypass me then promise me he gets into the recruits training at age 15 if he passes all the physical tests.” Eric said and saw that Michael agreed with his terms even before his friend spoke.
“I can agree to your terms, by 15 if he passes the physical tests I will personally make him aware of the existence of celestial clans. If he passes the Hunter Pedigree ceremony after passing through the Rite of passage activities with the older recruits, I will let him join the Guild as a hunter officially. He will be 16 by then and be the youngest ever hunter, it is up to you to train his mind and body on your own for now.” The Director said and shook his friend’s outstretched hand; their deal had been made official by the handshake. “We should go to my office and discuss anything else Eric, I don’t like discussing such things right here.” Michael said and proceeded to leave the room with the knowledge that Valerian was now monitoring Christian himself giving him few minutes at the least to have a private conversation with Erico Cacciatore.
They left the room together and shortly after that Valerian left Christian to sleep and snuck to the blood bank.
The 11 year old took some blood from his wrist with the syringe he found on the table and let his blood flow into it. He then proceeded to inject his blood into the blood bag that was marked “Christian Dumont” he just wanted to also donate some blood to his new friend and had no idea what the actual procedures were, he was a direct and overconfident kid who wanted to help a friend. He threw the injection into the thrash can at the end of the room and snuck out the door quietly just as he has snuck in then walked back to the room to wait for his father while Christian still slept. He had no idea what he had done or why he did it but all he knew was that he was helping a friend. The slight pain from using an injection on himself was still there but he planned on ignoring it so his father would not notice and he was actually being protected by fate or luck which was probably why nothing potentially fatal happened to him or Christian as a result of his decision to help. He had done something no one would ever be aware of, something that would change the course of his destiny as well as that of the 10 year old Christian Dumont. His best friend who he currently felt was like a younger brother to him since both their fathers were like brothers. Christian Dumont was about to get miraculously healed and healed permanently for the rest of his life, he would never fall sick again after this blood is transfused to him. No one on earth would ever know exactly what had happened that day, no one.
