Episode 1: A Familiar Face
Sophia stood at the window of the small, outdated office building, gazing out at the familiar streets of her hometown. The smell of coffee from the nearby café drifted in the air, mixed with the earthy scent of the rain that had just passed. She hadn’t expected to come back here, let alone for work. It had been years since she’d left, vowing never to return, but life had a way of circling back. And now, here she was—standing in the very town she’d once tried to escape.
Her heart pounded as she watched people walk by, each with their own life, their own story, while she was just a visitor in the place that used to be home. It wasn’t that she hated this place, but the memories it held were a bit too much to bear. And now, she was forced to face them again.
“Sophia, we’re ready for the meeting,” a voice called out, breaking her reverie. She turned around to find her colleague, Liam, standing at the door, clipboard in hand. He was always organized, always on time, a stark contrast to her more spontaneous, free-spirited nature.
“Thanks, Liam,” she said, offering him a half-hearted smile. She grabbed her coat from the back of the chair and followed him out of the office. Her task was clear—complete the building project for the small town’s revitalization project—but what she hadn’t anticipated was running into him. Him, of all people.
It wasn’t as if she hadn’t seen him before; the pictures of him and his new life on social media had made their way to her feed over the years. But there was something different about seeing Elliot in person again, about standing face-to-face with the man who had once been her world, the man she had once loved with everything in her.
The memory of their last day together, the words left unsaid, still lingered in her mind. They had ended on bad terms, each one blaming the other for their failed relationship, neither willing to admit the truth of their feelings. She hadn’t expected to see him again, let alone in a town that held all their history.
As they entered the meeting room, she tried to push the thoughts of Elliot out of her mind. She was here to work, after all, and that’s exactly what she intended to do. But as the meeting progressed, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something—or rather, someone—was missing. Her thoughts kept drifting back to him.
And then, as if the universe had a cruel sense of humor, she saw him.
He was standing at the entrance of the building, a familiar figure that made her heart stop. Elliot. He hadn’t changed much. The same dark, wavy hair. The same intense blue eyes that seemed to see right through her. But there was something else, something new—something that made her heart ache in a way she hadn’t expected.
She froze, caught between the past and the present. He hadn’t seen her yet, but she had seen him. The old feelings rushed in, ones she thought she had buried deep inside. The memories of their late-night conversations, the laughter they shared, the way he used to hold her like he never wanted to let go. It all came rushing back in a flood of emotions.
“Sophia?”
Liam’s voice cut through her thoughts, and she turned to him, her eyes wide. She could feel the color drain from her face. He followed her gaze and frowned.
“You okay?” Liam asked, his tone concerned.
Sophia nodded quickly, forcing a smile. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just—just a little distracted.”
Her heart was still racing as she watched Elliot disappear into the building. It wasn’t until the meeting was over that she found herself walking out into the hallway, her feet moving on their own accord, as if her body knew where it was headed before her mind could catch up.
She rounded the corner just in time to see Elliot entering the elevator. She hesitated, unsure whether she should approach him or just let the moment slip by. But before she could decide, the doors to the elevator opened, and there he was—standing right in front of her.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke. It was as if time had stopped, the world fading away around them. She couldn’t decide if she wanted to run toward him or run in the opposite direction. But then he spoke, his voice soft but steady.
“Sophia.”
The sound of her name on his lips felt like a jolt to her system, awakening all the feelings she had tried so hard to suppress. She took a deep breath, willing herself to be calm, to act as though she wasn’t just as affected as he seemed to be.
“Elliot,” she said, her voice surprisingly steady. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”
He shrugged, the hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “Neither did I.”
They stood there for a moment, an uncomfortable silence stretching between them. There was so much they could say, so much that had been left unsaid over the years. But neither of them knew where to start.
Finally, Elliot spoke again. “So, you’re back in town?”
“Yeah, just for a little while,” Sophia replied. “Work. The revitalization project.”
Elliot nodded, his gaze flickering to the floor before meeting her eyes again. “I’m glad. I mean, it’s good to see you.”
Sophia couldn’t help but notice the hesitation in his voice, the way his words seemed to carry a weight of their own. She didn’t know if he was saying it out of politeness or if he truly meant it. She wanted to believe it was the latter, but the past had a way of clouding things.
“I didn’t expect this,” she said, her voice quieter now. “Seeing you again, I mean. After everything…”
Elliot’s expression softened, and for a moment, she saw a flicker of the man she had once known so well. He reached out, almost as if instinctively, his hand hovering between them, but he quickly pulled it back. “I know. I didn’t either. I wasn’t sure if you were still—if you’d want to see me again.”
Sophia’s heart tightened. She hadn’t expected this kind of vulnerability from him. It made her want to reach out, to comfort him, but she wasn’t sure if she could. The scars from their past were still fresh, and she wasn’t sure if she was ready to open them up again.
“I don’t know what to say,” she admitted. “It’s been so long, and I—”
“I don’t expect you to say anything,” he interrupted gently. “I just—I don’t want things to be awkward between us.”
Sophia looked at him, really looked at him for the first time in years. She could see the lines of age on his face, the way his shoulders had gained a bit of muscle, the slight graying of his hair. But underneath it all, he was still the same Elliot—the man who had once made her heart race with a single smile.
But that was the problem, wasn’t it? He was the same Elliot, and so was she. And yet, so much had changed.
“I think it’s already awkward,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Elliot sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I get it. I just—”
Before he could finish, the elevator dinged, and the doors opened. The moment was broken, and Sophia realized just how heavy the silence had become. She had no idea how to move forward from this. The past was a tangled mess, and she wasn’t sure if she was ready to untangle it.
“I should go,” she said quickly, taking a step back. “I have a meeting. I—”
“Yeah, of course,” Elliot said, his voice tight. “I’ll see you around, I guess.”
Sophia nodded, her heart aching as she turned to walk away. As she made her way back to the conference room, she could still feel the weight of his gaze on her, as if he were waiting for her to turn back around. But she didn’t. She couldn’t.
As she sat down to continue her work, the only thing she could think about was how much things had changed, and yet how much they remained the same. And for the first time in a long while, she wondered if maybe, just maybe, there was a chance for them to rewrite their story.
