Childhood Memories and Family Changes
Mckenzie
When my twin brother Theo and I were little, our parents seemed like the perfect couple. They were loving mates towards each other, and we thought everything was great. We had a fun-loving dad and a very kind and nurturing mum. Our early years were filled with warmth and affection, creating an idyllic picture of family life.
As we started getting older, things began to change slowly, almost imperceptibly at first. Theo and I assumed that our parents were going through a rough patch, as every couple does from time to time. However, it soon became clear that the issues ran deeper than we initially realized. Mum began experiencing severe pain, becoming bedridden for days at a time. We were bewildered by her condition, as we had no understanding of what was wrong.
Dad's presence at home became sporadic. When he was home, he often emitted a strong, unpleasant Odor, reminiscent of a brewery. The fun-loving man we once knew was gradually replaced by a figure whose actions and demeaner were increasingly distant and troubling.
Our family's dynamic shifted dramatically, and the sense of stability we once had was replaced by uncertainty and concern. Mum's health continued to decline, and her once vibrant personality was overshadowed by the pain she endured daily. The joy that had once filled our home was now replaced by an air of worry and sadness.
When we turned 10, our mum told us that we were leaving the pack to go to our uncle’s, who is the Alpha of the Blessed Moon pack. For years, our mum had taught us to never show weakness in front of our father. One time, when we were 8 years old, we were crying because mum was in pain. We lay next to her, tears streaming down our faces, and she said, “Oh darlings, this is from the mate bond. I want you both to promise me something, okay?”
Through our tears, we nodded our small heads. “I don’t want you to show weakness. Be strong, always smile no matter what, never let anyone bully you or see you break.” Ever since then, we made a vow to mum to never let anyone see us break. This promise became a silent pact between Theo and me, a constant reminder of the strength and resilience our mum embodied despite her suffering.
The day we turned 11 marked a significant turning point in our lives. Mum woke us up early in the morning on our birthday, her expression a mix of determination and sorrow. Our bags were packed and waiting by the door, ready for our journey to the Blessed Moon pack. The simplicity of our breakfast—a single apple—was a stark contrast to the heaviness of the moment.
As we walked towards the front door, the sound of it opening with a bang startled us. Standing in the doorway was our father, a woman on his arm, and next to her, a little girl who bore an uncanny resemblance to both of them.
We all looked shocked at first before covering it up, but before we could speak, our father beat us to it. He introduced them as Casey, his new mate, and Heather, his daughter. Theo and I looked towards our mother, but she just stood there with a cold expression on her face, not saying anything. Then she said, "I, Alpha Angie Donald, reject you, Marcus Hills, as my mate and hereby renounce the Blue Hilltop pack."
Our mum rejected our dad and the pack. Mum looked over at us and nodded, signaling for us to renounce the pack and our father as well. Our father looked angry as he grabbed his chest. "How dare you, Angie!" he shouted.
"Reject me now, Marcus. You have your new family now. Clearly, Kenzie and Theo know where they stand since you brought them through the front door," our mum said calmly as she grabbed our hands.
"I, Marcus Hills, accept your rejection as your mate," our father said.
We looked at mum, who still had that cold look in her eyes. She stared at our father without showing any pain. Then, without another word, she walked us past him and into the car. Once we were on the road and out of the pack mum seem to be happy, she played the radio and we sang along to some of the songs, we pull over to a motel to get a room for the night and get something to eat as we were tired from the long drive.
"Mum, how long until we reach the Blessed Moon pack?" asked Theo as we dined at a local restaurant. "Hmm, probably about another day or so," she replied while discussing her home pack and its amenities, including our Uncle Richard and Aunt Mary, who is the Luna of the pack, and our cousin Margaret, commonly known as Maggie. I listened to their conversation until we returned to the motel room. I felt exhausted as we climbed into bed, and Mum gently stroked our hair until we fell asleep.
I woke with a jolt and a scream, remembering when my dad tried to pour wolfsbane down my throat, remembering the burning pain it caused, remembering Theo and mum hitting dad to get him off me. I was trying to calm down, but I couldn’t shake of the memory that happened when I was 9 years old then I smell my mum’s scent as she pulls me against her “Shh, it’s okay we are safe love, it’s okay” I feel her arms around me as I calm down.
Once I am settled, my mother kisses my head and says some calming words. Although I have not spoken in two years, the doctors have assured us that I am physically capable of speaking and that my throat is fully healed. They have explained that the incident caused a traumatic response in me, which is why I have been unable to speak. Despite my mother and Theo's efforts to encourage me to speak, I have been unable to do so. Our father believed that I was merely seeking attention, but his actions were the reason for my silence. My mother took us to see a therapist, who informed her that I would speak when the time was right.
I look at mum with sad eyes and sign to her “it’s okay mum, I’m fine now” and I smile at her as I give her a hug “I know darling I just want to hear your voice again” she says as she kisses my forehead “well its time to get up and hit the road to be at my brother’s pack” she murmurs as she gets off the bed, we all woke up and are quickly on the road. I look out the window watching the trees fly past as mum’s drives “Hey sis are you okay” Theo mindlinks me through our twin bond “Yeah just wish I could speak out loud so mum won’t feel so sad” I sigh back “You’ll speak again sis, we’ll keep up our secret lessons and when your ready mum’s tears will be happy ones” he said with a smile, I nodded back with a bigger smile.
We finally reached the Blessed Moon pack after three days of driving, I just feel relief that we are far away from the Blue Hilltop pack and away from our father, “Theo do you think we will be bullied here too” I asked nervously as I pick at my fingers “No I don’t think so and if they do I’ll protect you” he said out loud, mum turns to look at us and smiles “Are you guys using the twin bond to mindlink” she asked as we nod our heads at her.
“Good because I just used mine to contact my brother” she says and shocks Theo and I, but we quickly hug her and she laughs, we head to the front doors of the pack house and a tall man about 6’7’’ with dark brown hair, green eyes and sharp jawline comes out and picks up mum and spins her around calling her “Mate” as loud as he can before another man with jet black hair, same blue eyes as mum, with a cut over his left eye and a bushy bread, with a height of 7’1’’ comes over with a woman with red hair and hazel eyes delicate facial features with a girl who looks just like her.
