Chapter 1
Help! Someone please anyone help me! Aubrey screams as she is running through the dark college campus with no shoes, tattered clothes, and blood dripping down her mouth and legs. As she flees across campus yelling for help a group of men running after her are closing in just as a knock on the door wakes Aubrey from reliving the worst night of her life again.
“Aubrey, honey it’s time to get up, we are going to be late.” Tina, Aubrey’s mother, chirped outside the closed door.
“I’m up, I'll be down in just a few minutes mom.” Aubrey called back as she layed back down on her bed with a sigh.
Staring out the window at the blue sky Aubrey is remembering her nightmare and how it was her reality just last year. With a long sigh the slender blond throws her feet over the bed and straight to the bathroom to get ready. A few minutes later the long blond hair was up in a high ponytail with black skinny jeans and a purple v-neck shirt It has been a year since she has dressed in anything other than baggie shirts, hoodies, and sweatpants. After a long pause in the full length mirror she takes one last deep breath.
Ok Aubrey breath it's over your safe. New year, new you, be bold, be fierce”. She pushed out of her still tense jaw while looking in the mirror.
The sound of plates being set on the table and the smell of bacon put a little urgency in her steps. Her mother was an amazing cook and taught her everything she knew from cooking to baking. Audrey's father on the other hand was a businessman and was always in the office. The man can burn water on a stove, but make the perfect steak on a grill. Makes no sense to me either, but my mom said it's a man thing that started in the cave days and men just haven't evolved past it yet. Whatever.
“Mom, this smells great.” Aubrey praised as she strolled in the kitchen while doing her best to paint a smile on her face.
Oh hush I made you a snack for later in case you get hungry. Now sit and eat. We have a schedule to keep and places to be. Tina sang as she cleaned up from breakfast. My mom is all too excited to ship me to the new college two towns over, but her and dad are going on their first vacation alone in well probably ever. After breakfast the car is packed, the kitchen cleaned up, and we are piled in the SUV and on our way. As we pull off the street a flood of memories of my friends, my home, the old college, and my nightmare all seem to fade into the distance. Maybe this will be a real fresh start Aubrey smiled to herself as she faded back to sleep again.
