Chapter 1:
That day is the day I will never forget. There were sirens. Buzzing. Then nothing. Darkness surrounded everything. I can’t remember much of the incident, however, I remember the events leading up to it. Doctors say I’m a miracle. They don’t tell me much since it would cause “trauma”. I know better. I’m dying, I don’t have much time left. I feel my body deteriorating away slowly. It’s not a pleasant feeling. I see the doctor talking to my mom outside the room; she’s crying. I snuck a glance at the doctors notes, it’s like all my senses are heightened. I know I’m dying, it says so right there. Mom is no doubt crying over my soon departure. But I’m the miracle child, and I’m here now. I see my friends outside, but not my best friends. Kristina, Kyndal, and my boyfriend Noah are no where to be seen. My stomach sinks. Where are they? “Ivy! You’re awake!” Mom says excitedly, brushing away her freshly set tears. She motions for my friends to come. They look sad, but another emotion flickers across their face, one I can’t quite pin point. Something is wrong… I can feel it. Why were my best friends and boyfriend not there? “Where is Noah?” I ask. Everyone in the room gives me blank stares. Mom finally speaks up, “ He’s in the other room with Kristina, there was an accident…” Of course there was an accident that’s why I’m here, but there’s something in my mothers voice that makes me shiver. Something she isn’t telling me. “Mom?” I ask. Whatever she is holding back I need to know. “Ivy, your-your father is dead.” She finally whispers, another tear slipping down her cheek. Dead! How can my father be dead? “How did it happen, when, where, who did it?” The questions come pouring out of me before I even have a chance to think. Mom simply shakes her head and says, gently squeezing my hand, “The police have said that there has been little evidence that can be released to the public at this time. And there’s something else…” Mom’s voice quivers as she speaks. “Your dying… Ivy, you only have about two weeks left.” As reality struck I realize the weight of her words. Of course I had known, but I thought I had longer time. This time frame was of course an estimate, maybe I would have more time. I look up at my mom paralyzed, I never thought something so horrific could happen to me and my family. My family has always been a “normal” family. I went to Wallow High school and had a great group of friends. I wasn’t the most popular girl in school, but I also wasn’t the type of person who sat alone in a corner. I had good friends, I had two loving parents. I came from a middle class family, and lived in a three bedroom house. Everyone loved my parents, I have no idea who would’ve killed them. My mom was a well known businessman in our town, and my dad was a construction worker for Beaver Builders CO. I always thought that everything would be good and nothing bad would happen, but apparently I was wrong. We all know that we will die someday. It is a fact, like knowing that the sky is blue or that the grass is green. Everyone dies. I knew I would die. I just thought I would have more time. Time for school, time for college, time for a wedding and a family. Now I won’t even have time to graduate high school. Time is everything. As I stare out the window of my hospital bed, I feel the urge to get out of my bed. As I try to get out of my hospital bed, I notice my legs refusing to budge. I push and tug on them, but I feel nothing. Why weren’t they moving? I wondered helplessly. The doctor came in after seeing me struggle for a bit. “Ivy, unfortunately due you the accident you have lost all mobility in your legs. We can’t do much for your condition so you will be monitored at home by a nurse.” The doctor states. The horror and realization of how bad things had gotten had sunk in. My dad is gone, I can’t walk, and I won’t be able to live long enough to graduate. After the doctor left, I was finally able to move my legs to the side. I had to see for myself if I couldn’t walk. As soon as I hopped off the bed, I fell face-first onto the ground bleeding severely from my nose. Great, I thought, another thing to add to my medical file. The nurses must have heard my loud thud, because soon after they came rushing in. “I want to see my friends in the other room.” I protested, but I was already being dragged back in bed.
