5Megan’s scream turned Bryan’s blood cold. Over the out-of-control storm raging outside the cave’s entrance, her shrill cry echoed several times around the small enclosure then faded away.
“Go as deep as you can,” he hollered to Sam. “The wind will throw all sorts of debris into the entrance. Should be safer for us and the animals farther inside the cave.”
He dropped from his horse to the rock floor in the cavern’s wide opening. The soles of his boots slipped and slid across the wet surface as he made his way over to Megan. The moment he reached down to lift her, Sam appeared and grabbed Paul’s boots. In one strong heave, they lifted the unconscious man and carried him inside, propping him against the cave wall.
