The ceremony

Kyle offered his arm again, and this time Stephanie took it. Ahead of them, the music began. Stephanie lifted her chin, not because she was unhurt, but because she was not alone in the hurting. Kyle stayed close at her side. At the front of the room, Richard waited with Amelia in his arms, his eyes fixed only on her. And Stephanie walked forward on her brother’s arm toward the family that had chosen to stay. At the front of the room, Richard handed Amelia to Kyle for a moment, though the baby immediately grabbed for his jacket again as if she objected to being passed around during important business. Kyle whispered, “I know. Very rude of him to get married right now.” Stephanie laughed softly, and the sound steadied Richard more than any deep breath could have. The officiant began, but Richard barely heard the opening words. All he could see was Stephanie standing in front of him, veil trembling slightly with each breath, eyes bright and brave. Behind her, one row sat painfully empty. In front of him, she was still there. When it was time for the vows, Stephanie looked down at their joined hands. “You first,” she whispered. “If I go first, I might cry too hard to finish.” Richard’s smile was small and helpless. “I can do that.” He turned fully toward her and held both her hands. “Stephanie, I loved you before I was brave enough to know what to do with it. I loved you in school corridors, on rainy afternoons, on the edge of a dance floor when all I knew was that the room got quieter when you were beside me. I loved you in the years I missed you, even when I told myself missing you was enough.” Stephanie pressed her lips together, tears already spilling. Richard’s voice shook, but it did not break. “When I found you again, I thought I was getting a second chance with you. Then Amelia came into our life, and I realised I was being trusted with more than love. I was being trusted with a family.” He glanced at Amelia, who was now chewing thoughtfully on Kyle’s finger while Kyle pretended not to panic. “So I promise you this,” Richard continued. “I will not love you quietly when you need to hear it. I will not let fear make our choices for us. I will stand with you on the easy days and the days that ask more from us than we thought we had. I will choose Amelia as my daughter every morning, every night, and every ordinary moment in between. And I will choose you, Steph, not because life with you is simple, but because it is the life I want.” His thumb moved over her knuckles. “I missed my chance once because I was afraid. I will not spend our marriage being afraid to love you out loud.” Stephanie let out a broken laugh through her tears. “That was unfairly good.” A ripple of soft laughter moved through the room. Then Stephanie drew in a breath and looked at him like she was choosing courage one more time. “Richie,” she said, voice trembling. “You have always made me feel seen. Even when we were young and I did not know what to do with that, even when I made choices that took me away from you, some part of me remembered what it felt like to be beside you. Safe. Known. Not smaller. Not too much.” Richard’s eyes shone. “When I came back into your life, I was scared of needing anyone again,” Stephanie continued. “Then you came home every day. You held Amelia like she was already yours. You loved me in the middle of my fear instead of waiting for me to become easier. You did not ask me to be less complicated. You just stayed.” She turned slightly toward Amelia, smiling through her tears. “And you loved my daughter in a way that made room for both of us to breathe.” Kyle looked down quickly, blinking hard. Stephanie faced Richard again. “So I promise to stop making fear prove itself before I believe in love. I promise to let you stand beside me, not because I need saving, but because I want you there. I promise to build a home with you where Amelia knows she is loved without condition, where hard days do not mean leaving, and where we choose each other even when choosing is work.” She squeezed his hands. “You were my almost for so long, Richie. Today, I get to make you my always.” Richard bowed his head, overcome, and Stephanie reached up to brush a tear from his cheek with her thumb. From Kyle’s arms, Amelia made a loud, offended noise. The room laughed, and Stephanie laughed with them, leaning into Richard’s hands. Richard looked over at Amelia. “Yes, sweetheart. You are included.” Amelia immediately settled, as if satisfied with the correction.
