The ring in the bag
The Ring in the Bag Richard knew exactly what was waiting for him at home, and the thought made the forty-five-minute drive feel longer than usual. He and Stephanie had built a rhythm together—quiet, steady, almost sacred. She spent most days with Amelia because she wanted to, not because she had to. After years of fostering, Stephanie had not hesitated when Amelia needed a family right away; she had stepped forward with her whole heart. Richard loved watching her be a mother. Stephanie was gentle in a way that made the apartment feel softer when she was in it. She was patient, warm, and impossibly kind with Amelia. And Amelia—little, stubborn, sweet Amelia—had already wrapped herself around his heart. At a red light, he reached into his gym bag and checked the side pocket for the third time that day. The ring box was still there. Small. Black. Terrifying. They had not been together long by other people’s standards, but Richard did not care. He wanted Stephanie, Amelia, and the life already forming around them—only now he wanted to put a promise around it. By the time he reached the apartment building, the ring felt heavier than the duffel bag slung over his shoulder. In the lobby, the concierge waved him over with a parcel tucked beneath one arm. “Package for your girl.” Richard signed for it, wondering what Stephanie had ordered this time, then carried it upstairs. He set it on the shelf by the door—the place she liked deliveries to go—and paused when he heard a man’s voice from the living room. Kyle. Stephanie’s younger brother had a gift for appearing at the exact moment Richard wanted the house quiet. Normally, this was their time. He would come home, Stephanie would smile at him from the sofa, and the world would narrow to the three of them. Tonight, Kyle’s laughter filled the space instead. Richard rounded the corner and found Stephanie curled on the couch with Amelia asleep against her chest. Her hair was loose around her face, one hand spread protectively over the baby’s back. She looked tired. She looked beautiful. “She wouldn’t go down?” he asked, bending to kiss Stephanie’s forehead. “Nope.” Stephanie smiled up at him. “Every time I try to put her in the crib, she scrunches up like I’ve betrayed her.” “Need me to take her?” “If you want. I’m not promising miracles.” Kyle snorted from the chair. “I’ve tried holding her. She only wants Steph.” Richard ignored the edge in his voice and carefully lifted Amelia. She fussed at first, her tiny body tightening in protest, but he tucked her against his chest and swayed once, then twice. Within seconds she settled into the hollow of his neck, warm and trusting. Perfect. Kyle’s expression shifted. “It’s going to be really bad for her when you two break up.” The room went still. Richard looked at Stephanie. Her eyes had widened, and that told him enough. Whatever Kyle had just said had not come out of nowhere. “Steph,” Richard said quietly, careful not to wake Amelia, “can I talk to you for a minute?” Stephanie stood, brushing a hand over Amelia’s back as she passed. “Kyle, check the food.” Kyle opened his mouth, then thought better of it. In Stephanie’s office, Richard closed the door behind them. Amelia slept between them, her cheek pressed to his shirt, while Stephanie leaned back against the desk and worried her bottom lip. “Is there something I need to know?” he asked. Stephanie’s mouth twitched, as if she wanted to deflect with a joke. “Apparently, watching you be a dad is very distracting.” He gave her a look. “You know that’s not what I meant.” Her smile faded. “I know.” “Do you know why he said that?” Stephanie looked down, then reached out and rested her hand on his arm. The touch was small, but deliberate. “My parents think Amelia’s getting too attached to you.” Richard stared at her. “Too attached?” “They think if we break up, it’ll hurt her. They think it isn’t fair to let you be part of her life unless we’re certain.” He almost laughed, but there was no humour in it. “What about me? In case no one noticed, I’m pretty attached to both of you.” Stephanie’s eyes softened. “I told them we have no intention of breaking up.” “And?” “They didn’t like that either.” Her parents were trying to protect her from another mistake, and Richard understood that in theory. But they did not know what it felt like to come home and find the life he wanted sitting on the couch, half-asleep with a baby in her arms. They did not know about the ring in his bag. “Do you think it would be a mistake?” he asked. “Us staying together?” Stephanie moved closer until her hand slid from his arm to his chest. “No. I think the only mistake we could make is walking away because other people are scared for us.” The tightness in his ribs loosened. She smiled faintly. “We’re good, Richie. We’re comfortable. You never make me feel like I have to prove anything. If you had your way, I’d stay home, you’d hire a maid, a butler, and a personal chef, and I’d never have to lift a finger again.” “Those are still options.” She laughed under her breath. “I like our routine. I like our life.” So did he. More than she knew. “Come on,” Stephanie said, glancing toward the door. “Before Kyle decides we disappeared.” She rose onto her toes and kissed him before he could answer. It was brief, but it carried enough promise to make him forget, for half a second, that her brother was on the other side of the wall. When they returned to the living room, Kyle looked up from his phone. “Good. I thought you two were going to come out with a second baby.” Richard’s jaw tightened. Stephanie’s fertility had never been a joke. They had talked through the tests, the appointments, the disappointment, and the grief. They had decided adoption was not a backup plan. It was a door. Amelia had come through that door, and Richard would not let anyone make Stephanie feel less whole because of it. He swallowed the reply sitting sharp on his tongue. Their life had never followed a straight line. Richard and Stephanie had once been best friends in high school, the pair everyone assumed would eventually figure themselves out. Instead, she left with someone else and returned years later carrying wounds Richard wished he could have spared her. That history was why Kyle’s words landed so hard: everyone had seen what they were before either of them was brave enough to name it.
