FAIRY DUST

CLAIRE My wolf hasn’t talked to me in weeks. It couldn’t accept the rejection, nor could I, but I know it was for the best. Our relationship, or whatever it was appropriate to call it, merely lasted three weeks, but I’ve already seen how responsible he was with his pack. He was a true leader, and a rogue like me only hindered his success. “Miss, are you alright?” I nodded and went to one side. I’ve been working myself off to keep myself preoccupied while also being busy with my thesis. Just a little bit more push, and I could graduate. That was my only motivation to go on with life. “I’m sorry if I sound nosy, but you look pale, like a sheet of paper pale. Do you want to go to the infirmary?” The man who asked me approached me again. I could feel his concern, which probably meant that I looked terrible. Did I push myself too much? “Thank you, but I’m fine.” I still insisted as I wanted to go home to rest. I can’t be seen by any human doctor or any other medical professional, either, as my body works differently. I tried walking away but stumbled again. Can’t I have enough strength to reach the bus stop?! “How about we get something to eat before you go? I promise I’m not a weirdo or anything. I just can’t pass by, seeing that you can barely walk.” In the end, I followed him to the nearest cafe, just outside campus. I was surprised by how much he ordered, but he said he’d take whatever I couldn’t finish. I offered a small smile after I finished half of the sandwich, “Thank you for helping me, and please tell me the bill, so I can at least pay for half of it.” “No, that is a lot of food. If you want to pay, just do it for your portion. Don’t worry; I have a pretty huge family. No food will be wasted.” He smiled brightly, “I’m Enzo, by the way.” He offered his hand for a handshake. “I’m Claire. You-” I stopped speaking after we shook hands. How could I not realize it earlier? “You’re not an ordinary human,” I said after realizing who and what he was. Witches were harder to spot among a human crowd unless they were very powerful. His smile grew wider. “And you’re not either. I figured just after you refused to go to the infirmary. I don’t really practice, but I know a thing or two.” “Thank you for helping me,” I said with comfort. I felt awkward being vulnerable around a human, but I felt a lot more comfortable after knowing who he was. Witches are known to bring balance to nature. They don’t partake in or side with any creatures during a feud and mostly act as mediators. If there were anyone else to trust, that would be them. “No problem, but may I know why you’re like that? Your kind rarely gets sick. I suggest you spend more time in your pack’s territory. Being close to nature always helps your kind.” What Enzo said was true. Unfortunately, I don’t have that. “I don’t have a pack,” I answered, forcing a smile, and continued eating. There was surprise and guilt in his eyes. “I’m alright. I’ve been in this situation for years, but I met my mate earlier this month, and it didn’t go well. My wolf hasn’t accepted it yet, and it’s taking a toll on my body.” I admitted. My instincts tell me that I could trust him, and I should admit that I feel so relieved that I could talk to someone without any restriction on my words. He nodded. “You’ve been through a lot…” “That’s an understatement.” I joked, even though it was part of the truth. “May I touch your hand again? I’m not the most powerful person in town, but I could do something to ease your wolf.” I looked at him in confusion. Can he really do that here? Enzo chuckled a second after, “I know that face. Don’t worry, none of us will emit a random light or levitate, and I definitely won’t produce fairy dust. It’s just a simple spell.” I suddenly felt embarrassed after being caught. It’s precisely my concern. “Sorry,” I answered and gave him my hand. Enzo chuckled, “Don’t worry, human imagination towards us is far worse. At least you know that I’m harmless.” He held my hand with both hands, enveloping it, and started whispering in an ancient language only witches knew. My dad told me that it was the language of the gods and that only witches knew about it. I immediately felt comfortable right after. He let go of my hand, but his expression bothered me. Enzo looked surprised and worried. Werewolves cannot contact human illnesses, but he looked at me like I was terminal. “Is there something wrong?” I feel like I’ve asked that question a thousand times already. Every single time I did, more problems were added to my long list of unresolved ones. Maybe I shouldn’t have asked. He swallowed and drank some water before he spoke to me, “Nothing is wrong with you physically… but I think you’re pregnant.” I felt my whole world stop when I heard his remark. I thought that my connection with Killian was forever severed, and it was until this news came up. “But I’m not very sure about it. I’m bad at sensing those, but I have a relative living a few blocks away if you’re okay with it. My aunt could see it more accurately than I could.” I agreed, and he fished out his phone and called for someone. While I appreciate his efforts to help me, especially since I don’t have a pack doctor to ask for help, I couldn’t help but worry about this child’s future if it wasn’t a false alarm. It wasn’t even five minutes later, and a woman in her early forties was already holding my hand for around thirty seconds before confirming that life was forming in my womb. “It was really easy to sense its presence. I’m pretty sure this child will be born healthy. Just make sure you take care of yourself.” She told me with a smile. I should have also been happy, but I fear what will happen. If there is one thing, I’m sure of right now. Killian cannot know about this baby.
