I was still angry at Hector as I finished dinner. I was so angry I could feel the heat in my ears. How could they allow that man to be on the council? He was becoming power-hungry. I was going to tell Tyler when he got back home. He was always talking about protecting me. This was definitely something that he should be protecting me from. A man harassing me about marriage and s*x.
I could only imagine what Tyler would've said if he had heard what Hector said. Although Hector wouldn't have said it within earshot. Even if Tyler wasn't chosen to go out today.
I looked out into the desert. Tyler should be heading back by now. The sun was beginning to set. I sat there and waited, looking out into the sand dunes and beautiful sun set. My mind was dizzy with all of the scenarios that could've happened to Tyler. The van could've broken down. He could have been caught by the vampires. He could've gone and saw there was no danger and decided not to come back. I knew he would come back for me. He would just have to make a plan.
As my thoughts ran a mile a minute, I kept my eyes glued to the desert. I'm scanning my eyes over the horizon. Where it looked like the earth and the sky came together. Then suddenly, two bright headlights appeared in the distance. I exhaled a sigh of relief, knowing Tyler was safe.
Then I held my breath again as another pair of headlights appeared, then another one, and another one. I stood up from my seat, counting 8 cars driving towards the Sanctuary. Did Tyler bring new people for the Sanctuary? Or did he see that we were all fed lies about the vampires and contacted the police?
The Sanctuarys panic bell began ringing loudly. I heard someone scream. Everyone saw it now, and they were warning all of us that we were under attack. I wanted to stay and see if they were cops or not. I stood on my tippy toes to get a better look. That's when a large hand covered my mouth and pulled me back inside my shack. I screamed against the hand. I began kicking, ready to fight. I thought it was Hector trying to get a feel.
"Stop it, Lily!" Tyler's hushed voice yelled at me.
I mumbled his name into hand in shock. He turned me around to face him, holding a finger up to his lips, telling me to be quiet. Tyler was filthy and looked terrified.
"What's going on?" I whispered
Tyler stared at me and then sighed in defeat, looking down at the floor.
"It's all true, Lily. What we were told. All of it." Tyler whispered."I'm afraid I accidentally led them right to us."
I stared back at him in shock."What? How?" I asked, keeping my voice low.
Tyler gritted his teeth and looked up from the floor, taking a peak out the open door behind me.
"There isn't much time. We have to go." He told me, heading to the back window and pulling down the blanket that hung there.
I still stood there in shock. All of it was real? Everything? Vampires were real? Now they were coming for us, and we were going to just leave.
"Lily, come one. I want to try to sneak Gerald and Giovanna out to." He whispered quickly as he climbed out the window. That snapped me out of my trance.
"Don't bother." I told him as I followed him out the window.
It was his turn to look shocked.
"They're both dead. Gerald asked Giovanna to kill him. She did. So the council killed her for murdering Gerald."
He shook his head as if he was trying to clear it.
"But he asked her to." Tyler said his shocked expression turned into anger. I think he finally saw what I saw in the council.
"She wanted to die too." I told him in an effort to comfort him. I left out the part where I saw Gerald's body, and Giovanna asked me to report it.
Tyler sighed and shook his head again. He recovered quickly as he began walking.
"Stay down and keep out of sight." He told me. We slowly and sneakily crept up the dune behind our Shack. We made it just time as the 8 cars made it to the Sanctuary. Tyler and I began running as we heard the screams of our people behind us start up. My stomach twisted into knots hearing their screams. But we knew there wasn't much we could do. How could we save at least 30 people against 1 vampire, let alone multiple.
We ran till I saw the van parked a few feet away. I didn't want to look behind me, I was afraid of what might be chasing us. We were almost there when a pair of headlights sped around the corner. I gasped and stopped in my tracks as the headlights stopped in front of us.
I thought Tyler stopped, too, but he kept running. The driver and passenger were already exiting their car as Tyler jumped into the van. I began running again to catch up to Tyler. I heard a smooth male voice suddenly behind me.
"Go ahead and run, girl. I love a good chase."
Fear went up my spine as my heart was in my throat. I made it to the van and jumped into the back instead of running around the front. Tyler, who had already started the van, stomped on the gas pedal. I slammed the sliding door shut.
I was breathing heavily, trying to catch my breath.
We were escaping, and we were going to get away. I looked out the back window and saw the 2 figures still standing near their car as we drove away. Why weren't they chasing us? I continued to watch as we drove farther away. Then they were gone, they vanished before my eyes. I searched for them.
"Oh s**t!" Tyler screamed as he hit the brakes. The car hit something hard and threw me forward. I hit against the back of the driver and passenger seat. Hard. I groaned, my ribs hurting from the impact. We must've hit a boulder or something.
I pulled myself up off the van floor, holding my side.
"Tyler? Are you ok?" I got no answer. I looked to the front seat. Tyler's head rested on the airbag from the steering wheel. Blood was dripping from his head down his face.
No no no no. I repeated in my head a couple of times. As I reached up and checked his pulse on his neck. There was still a heartbeat. He was just passed out and hurt badly.
I looked up out the windshield to see what we had hit. I was in shock by what I was seeing. I expected a boulder or maybe a tree. But in front of the van stood a man. I shouldn't say in front of the van, more like in the van. He was hit so hard the front of the van wrapped around him like a pole. I expected him to be hurt or even dead. But he just stood there glaring at me. He was no man. He was a vampire.
He was pale and had no hair. He wore nice clothes. A dark blue jacket with a white cotton button-up shirt. But I barely saw that. All I saw was his black eyes staring back at me.
I started to try and shake Tyler awake panicking. I was having no luck as the vampire pulled himself out of wreckage like it was nothing. I heard the other ones laugh come from somewhere.
"That wasn't much of a chase." I looked around, trying to find him.
The other bald one responded to him. "They got oil on my shirt."
The door beside me was sudden ripped off its hinges and thrown across the desert. I screamed as the other vampire appeared. He had hair, and also were nice clothes. He had black eyes, too.
"Hello darling," He said as he grabbed me by my arms.
