Chapter 3

“Doctor, what do you mean by that “, I jerked up immediately as I abruptly stood up from my seat in a state of shock. I didn’t think I had recovered from the doctor’s last statement when he dropped another bombshell. “We would need a sum of 50 million dollars before we can start the operation and a deposit of $70 million after the operation has been concluded. The tears I had been trying to hold in all these days flooded out as I tried so much to maintain my strength, however, that wasn’t even my main thought right there at that moment. I looked at the doctor, feeling like I had lost all hope. “Ms. Isabella, can you please sit down? We have a lot to discuss right now about your mum’s health condition. The accident caused her to lose a lot of blood, and she has O-negative blood, which makes matters worse, O-negative blood is hard to find, and this hospital has made contact with 5 other hospitals, all of which have told us that they don’t have it either. Also, I…..” Doctor Alfred was about to finish his sentence when Isabella cut him off. “Doctor Alfred, so what you are saying is I need a sum of 130 million dollars to complete my mum’s operation because she has kidney disease, and the transplant is needed almost immediately?” He nodded, confirming my worst fears, I stood up from the chair opposite the doctor, confused and shattered. “This can't be happening…. Where am I supposed to get that huge amount of money from? Even if I took out loans and worked for a lifetime, I still couldn't….” my voice trails off almost breaking down at the same time. “I know this is a lot to take in right now, but we need to operate on your mother within 24 hours before it's too late. The doctor said, “What did you say, doctor? “ I asked, trying to get him to repeat whatever he had just said. “Ms. Isebella, your mother is in a very critical condition. we have less than 24 hours to save her life.” Isabella jolted back to reality when she heard the doctor’s words, “Wait, she is my mother. Isn't it possible that I have the same blood type? We share the same DNA, right? “Ms. Isabella, your blood types don't match. And….well, your DNA doesn't either.” “What are you talking about, doctor, she is my mother. Of course, our DNA matches!” I almost lost my mind while looking at the man in front of me. "Are you questioning my career path as a doctor ma’am? The test doesn't lie”, doctor Alfred said, and for a very long time, I felt very scared as I looked around. “I don't care about the test results. She's my mother. I will find a way to get the money for her surgery. That's all that matters.” I grabbed my bag, fighting back the tears in my eyes as I left the office. Even though I knew I was dying right inside, I couldn’t bear to break down in front of the doctor. As I walked out, right there at the front of the hospital, a black Mercedes began to drive in as I spotted them, journalists flooded out of nowhere, surrounding a woman dressed in a black gown and leather jacket with a hat covering most of her face which made her look like a gangster. It was none other than the famous Bianca whales. “Is that not Bianca Whales, one of the supermodels in the country?” I overheard someone whispering behind me. “I heard that she is super rich and generous, always helping people in need”, another voice chipped in. “Nah, she is here to donate some money for the poor who can’t pay their bills”, a husky male voice added. Those were the rumors I was hearing behind me, and for a minute or two, I wanted to cover my ears to block out the noise, to feel peace again. I took a step forward to hail a taxi, and then something struck me. That was it, exactly! ******* I went home excited that I had finally met Bianca Whales, and she offered to help. I stared at the document I had signed in her office earlier that evening. It was too late to regret my decision, not that I wanted to. But actually… My thoughts paused for a while as I wondered what I had gotten myself into. She had given me a condition, a condition to receive her help. However, I didn't care about the condition, even though I knew I was putting both my life and my future at risk. I didn't care at all. I would sacrifice the world to save one person, and that person was my mum. I momentarily closed my eyes. Finally, it all felt like I was going to be free like everything was going to be fine, I glared at the stars, trying to get my thoughts together once again. The words of the police officer echoed in my head as I stared at myself in the mirror. “Your mother didn’t have an accident, it was an attempt on her life. And trust me once she is gone, you are their next target, if you play victim, no one would believe you because power only belongs to those with influence and money as their weapon.” His words sounded like riddles in my ears. I scoffed as I snuggled myself under the blanket. I had to sleep well because tomorrow was the day my whole life would turn upside down. I didn’t know when darkness overtook me, as I closed my eyes, finally taking a break from my struggles and pain.
