Prologue
Once upon a time, in a quaint and idyllic village ensconced within a picturesque landscape of rolling hills and verdant forests, there resided two youthful siblings who bore the names Lucas and Lynn. These siblings, though bound by the unbreakable ties of blood and shared childhood, possessed an intriguing and somewhat unconventional manner of expressing their affection for each other – a fervent engagement in play characterized by an unabashed intensity and spirited zeal. The sun, a radiant sphere of golden warmth, cast its benevolent light upon the landscape, its effulgent beams filtering through the dense canopy of towering oak trees. Underneath the dappled caress of sunlight, Lucas and Lynn, their youth painted across their visages, found themselves nestled in the familial embrace of their backyard. Here, amid the swaying grasses and earthen terrain, they fervently immersed themselves in a game of tag. Their voices rang out, a cacophonous symphony of joyous shrieks and mirthful laughter, punctuated by the occasional cacophony of playful scuffles and tumbles in the soft bosom of the earth. Amidst this spirited contest, their beloved grandfather, a venerable figure whose face bore the imprints of age and wisdom, sat ensconced in the comforting embrace of a rocking chair upon the porch. His ancient eyes, peering out from beneath the refuge of weathered brows, observed the youthful revelry of his cherished grandchildren. However, the countenance he wore was not one of unalloyed contentment; instead, a furrow of disquiet marked his brow. His gaze was fixated on the unfolding scene, a scene that bespoke of escalating tumult and fervor, a spectacle rife with potential harm. As the youthful siblings, fervently locked in the throes of their raucous game, drew nearer to him, their grandfather's concern burgeoned. He discerned that their play, although emanating from the wellspring of innocence, was spinning dangerously close to the precipice of recklessness. He knew that it was imperative to intercede, to stem the tide of unbridled play before misfortune befell one of his beloved charges. With a gradual, but determined ascent from his aged chair, he navigated his way toward the effervescent duo. Lucas and Lynn, their faces flushed with exhilaration, paused their exertions, their breaths laboring with the exertion of their frolic. "Children," their grandfather implored, his voice quavering with heartfelt worry, "you must put an end to this tumultuous play." Lucas, never one to lend gravitas to matters, cast his eyes heavenward in exasperation. "But, Grandfather, it's just a game. We are merely having fun!" Lynn, her unkempt tresses bouncing with each nod of her head, concurred heartily. "Indeed, Grandfather, we are quite well!" Their grandfather, sighing with the burden of foreknowledge, descended to their eye level, a solemnity adorning his expression. "Dear grandchildren, it is imperative that you apprehend the existence of forces that reside beyond the purview of ordinary understanding. Witches, spirits, and other supernatural entities – they are very real." Lucas scoffed incredulously, and Lynn, unable to contain her laughter, joined her brother in his skepticism. "Witches, Grandpa? Those are naught but tales spun from the loom of folklore!" The venerable elder, in a silent requiem for the fading innocence of his descendants, shook his hoary head. "Oh, my darlings, they are not mere tales, I assure you. I have borne witness to the substantiation of their existence. I’ve actually crossed paths with some during my youthful days." Lucas and Lynn, in great disbelieve said in unison “Really Grandpa?” “Yes children, it was a long, long time ago but the memories still feel like it was just yesterday.” Lucas and Lynn, their interplay marked by shared curiosity, exchanged glances in which the pallor of their skepticism had perceptibly dwindled. The fragrance of intrigue began to waft through the air, its tendrils of curiosity threading their way into the depths of their consciousness. "Please, Grandfather," Lucas beseeched, his eyes widened with inquisitiveness, "do illuminate us with the proof of which you speak." Their grandfather, cognizant that he had kindled the spark of their interest, unveiled a knowing smile. "I shall regale you with the truth," he proclaimed, "but only if you promise to harbor goodwill for one another, to eschew the tempestuous ways that have heretofore marked your play." In unison, Lucas and Lynn eagerly acceded to his terms, pledging an end to their rambunctious exploits. Yet, as the tableau of anticipation reached its zenith, their parents, prompted by the curiosity wrought by the commotion, made their entrance into the room, each harboring a secret yearning for the tantalizing prospect of a spine-tingling narrative. "Father," their father inquired, albeit with a feigned veneer of bravery, "are we to be amused with a tale of the eerie and uncanny?" Their mother, a chuckle underscored in her words, turned toward her husband and intoned, "You are not harboring a sense of fear, are you, dear?" The grandfather, a twinkle of mischief dancing in his aged eyes, welcomed the challenge. "Well, let us say that the clarification of the forthcoming narrative shall determine that." He cleared his throat, his eyes awash with the gleam of storytelling, and commenced his account. "In times of yore, within the enigmatic enclaves of a mystical woodland, one not too distantly located from our very home, there existed a wise and potent sorceress." Lucas and Lynn, their attention rapt, leaned forward in unison, their eyes shining with the splendor of enchantment. Their parents, drawn into the narrative's orbit, listened with an absorption that transported them all to a realm where magic and mystery reigned supreme. “You know what children, I will just make the story about this very sorceress’ son. He was indeed the one who I came across with in my days”, their grandfather said, while a nostalgic thought of the past came to his memory. He took a pause. “What are you waiting for grandpa?” The children asked in great excitement. “Yea dad, what’s with the sudden pause?” Their father asked out of sudden curiosity. The grandfather, swallowing all his feelings, sighed and said, “Okay children, it all started a long time ago…”
