Astrid, daughter of recently deceased officer Rowland, discovered a pond behind her fathers house when going through his possessions. To her shock, the pond was a portal which took her to a forest. But when she tried to return home the portal wouldn't work. Where was she? How was she going to get home? And how long was she going to be stuck there?

The Island of Monoke
I received the news of my father passing away yesterday. I am currently on a plane flying to the island to sort through his belongings, and to sell his house. I don't know what he was doing out here but I sur-"  BING  "Ladies and gentlemen, we have just been cleared to land at the Monoke airport. Please make sure one last time your seat belt is securely fastened. The flight attendants are currently passing around the cabin to make a final compliance check and pick up any remaining cups and glasses. Thank you.” I look around at my seat to see if everything was correct and made sure my seat belt was fastened. "Ladies and gentlemen we are beginning our descent."  I feel the plane begin to make its descent towards the ground. I lean back in my seat and think back again to my father. I wonder what he was like. I remember very little about my father but I wish he had been around while I was growing up. Maybe he left something for me behind, seeing as I was their only child. My mother said that they met while she was a part of the police force in Tampa, Florida. They went to academy together, trained together, and even graduated together. Then 6 years later after they were able to settle into a good style of life, I was born. They raised me as best they could while balancing their work life. We had a good life together, until the great hurricane that made landfall. But this wasn't a normal storm. I still remember it like it was yesterday.... It began like any other storm; rain, wind, and the sirens. Not hurricane or tornado sirens, but music type sirens. My mother said she didn't hear it but I knew what I was hearing. My father always told me that I was special and that one day I would know what he meant. But that night all I could focus on was the screams from my mother yelling my fathers name or what I thought was his name. "Ragnorian!!"  I looked out towards the sea, and I swear it looked as if the water was dragging him away from the land. I was only 7 years old at the time. Now here I am, 21 years old and heading the place where my father has been supposedly been hiding out. Though, I never knew that this island existed. “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Monoke Airport. Local time is 5:50am and the temperature is a beautiful 75 degrees. For your safety and comfort, please remain seated with your seat belt fastened until the Captain turns off the Fasten Seat Belt sign. This will indicate that we have parked at the gate and that it is safe for you to move about. At this time, you may use your cellular phones if you wish. Cellular phones may only be used once the Fasten Seat Belt sign has been turned off. Please check around your seat for any personal belongings you may have brought on board with you and please use caution when opening the overhead bins, as heavy articles may have shifted around during the flight. If you require deplaning assistance, please remain in your seat until all other passengers have deplaned. One of our crew members will then be pleased to assist you. On behalf of Monoke Airlines and the entire crew, I’d like to thank you for joining us on this trip and we are looking forward to seeing you on board again in the near future. Have a nice day!” I gather my things and begin following everyone off the plane and through the terminal tunnel. As we came through on the other side I looked around in shock. This place was nothing like Tampa's airport. It seemed more like a palace than an airport. I ride the escalator down to the main level and start heading to the door to look for a cab when I heard my name. I quickly stopped and looked around. I didn't know anyone here. Did I? "Astrid Nethirian?"  "Yes?" I said quizzically "Right this way Madam." "And who are you? I thought I would be here alone." The gentleman smirked, "No Madam, your father had a whole staff to serve him." "Serve him?!?!" I exclaimed and then burst out laughing "You make it sound like my father was someone of importance." "Something like that Madam." He motioned to the limo waiting "I'll explain when we reach the estate." XXXX As we pulled through the trees and into a clearing; we turned right onto what I suspected to be the driveway to my fathers house. Although, as we pulled closer and closer, what I thought was his house, was actually a 3 story mansion with intricate and ornate designing around the eaves, an archway over the front door to give cover to whomever pulled to the front door, and the windows had more intricate ornate designing around them. The yard was humongous; to say you could comfortably fit 3 houses on the lawn was an understatement. And from what I could see, before the mansion obstructed my view, though I'm sure I would get the grand tour later, it looked like there was a miniature replica of the house. Though I'm sure it was the garage. Someone different opens my door and ushers me inside. "Welcome home Your Highness I am your butler, my name is Calder. The one whom you met at the airport is your driver Gulbrand. He will take your bags to the main bedroom." Did he just call me "Your Highness"?? I keep quiet about hearing it, maybe it was something my father had his butler call him and he thinks that I would want to be called that as well. "Calder?" "Yes Mistress?" "When is dinner?" I ask curiously "I'm actually kind of hungry after my flight." "Where are my manners? I am so sorry Your high-"  I stop him quickly stop him. "Calder you don't have to call me Your Highness, my father may have preferred for you to call him 'Your Highness' but I do not wish to be addressed that way." "Oh no Your Highness" Calder said quickly "Wait... Guldbrand didn't tell you, did he Your Majesty?"  "Tell me what?" I start feeling sick to my stomach that there is something that I don't know about my father "OK. What is going here?" "Astrid." Calder beckons me to the grand chair. "Please sit. For you will not be able to take this information standing." I take a seat as Calder recommended I do.
