PROLOGUE
Autumn breeze flew around the Martinez mansion. The calm and serene air was filled with shouts for a second or two when the garden door was flung open. Brandon Martinez stepped out with a deep frown and slammed the door shut behind him, also shutting down the yells of the two adults arguing like kids inside. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes to let the silence settle over him. Brandon, who was turning thirteen next month, was too young for this. He couldn't bear hearing his parents s***h each other with their venomous words. Initially, he had tried to step-in. Tried to make them stop. But they would only yell at him to get inside his room and shut the door if they bothered him that much. When it all started around three years back, he had been upset at how often they fought. Then he had been scared that his parents were going to seperate. Then he had been angry at them for not getting a divorce already and sticking to arguing with each other everyday like a routine. Then he had been frustrated because he realised they never would get a divorce and risk ruining their reputation of being "the perfect family". Now after years of seeing the same drama everyday, Brandon was fed up. He was thoroughly fed up and wanted nothing to do with their cat and mouse quarrels. He stomped through the garden and made his way to the wall. The wall he used often to flee away whenever he wanted. He climbed the bricks he'd placed strategically behind trees so no one would notice. Not that anyone really cared if he was gone for a while. Hooping one leg over the wall, he pulled himself up and jumped over the other side. He loved the little thrill that came along with sneaking and jumping over walls. Autumn leaves crumbled under his expensive shoes that his father had bought him for his previous birthday. Oh, how easily he could exchange these shoes which he loved so much for his parents to be civil with each other. He'd do anything to get his happy family time together back once again. Cool wind caressed his face and he zipped up his hoody, pulled his hood closer to his face, stuffed his hands in his pockets and started walking towards his default place whence tired. The hills that covered the Martinez mansion as well as the town he resided in weren't that steep or dangerous. They were sparsely covered with woods here and there and their were hardly any wild animals around. Yet, no one came over the hills. Why? Brandon had no idea. "They are simply missing out on life too much" was what he usually thought to himself when he climbed up the beautiful paths alone. Up on the hill closest to his house, at the very top from where one could easily look down at the whole town was a bench. His favourite spot. His own calm place. Unlike everyday, when he would come here tired, look over the town's beauty and then leave with a question of why no one would want to see this, he found an answer that particular day. The answer that came from a young girl, about her age. "What are you doing here?" was the first thing that slipped past his lips. "Oh hello! I'm sorry, I didn't know this was private property. I was exploring," she said. Brandon had never seen such bright pair of brown eyes. "This is not. I was shocked to see someone since no one really comes around here," he explained. "Though, I don't know why," he muttered to himself. The girl beamed at him, "I guess I do." "You do?" he asked. "Hm... I think only some people are blessed with the ability to see the obvious beauty that people tend to ignore. You and I are blessed in that way it seems," she said with a wide grin. That day, Brandon and the girl talked for hours about the little things that made them happy- so much that they forgot to exchange names. That day, he went home feeling much better than he ever did. After that day, he didn't have the same question anymore. After that day, he didn't see that girl anymore. Until much later in high school. Beautiful and out of fuvking reach.
