Chapter 9: Just A Coincidence

I woke up early the next morning even though I don’t have work. I went downstairs and my parents were already there and are about to eat their breakfast. I kissed them both. “I thought you were still sleeping so I told the maids not to call you for breakfast.” Mom said. “Good morning. It’s okay mom I’ll just have some cereals.” I said. “You know that you have to eat full breakfast right? Cereal is not good enough.” Dad said. “I will have breakfast later Dad.” I said. “I’ll just go back to my room. I have some things that needs to be done.” I said. “Okay dear. Don’t you have work today?” mom said. “No, it’s my day off.” I said. “So will you stay at home today?” Dad said. “I’ll have to meet with Kyle later today. We have something important to discuss.” I said. “I think that guy Kyle is not really good for you Cassandra.” Dad said. “Oh please Dad. Kyle is a good person and I love him as much as he loves me.” I said. “He has no ambition but to manage a club. What kind of person does that?” he said. “What’s wrong with that? He’s earning his own money.” I said. “By managing a club? What future can he give to you?” he said. “Dad, Kyle is doing good at his business please don’t underestimate him like that.” I said. “They have a family business. Why can’t he just join in their construction company and not just manage some clubs?” he said. “Dad please, stop it already. I love Kyle and I don’t see anything wrong with that. Please understand.” I said. “Okay stop it you two. It’s too early to argue.” Mom said. “Okay, I’m sorry.” Dad said. “I’ll just go to my room. Excuse me.” I said. I ran to my room and there I let all my frustrations out. I’m not mad at Dad. I just want him to be fair to Kyle. I called Kyle and asked him if we will meet later and he said that he’ll try because something came up. It was good though because I feel guilty and I don’t want to meet him because of what Dad said. I locked myself in my room the whole day. It was around five in the afternoon when my mom knocked at my door. I let her in. “Hi dear. Can I talk to you?” she asked. “Of course Mom.” I said. “Come in.” “Thank you.” She said. “Aren’t you going out with Kyle tonight?” “I’m not. Something came up and so we rescheduled our meeting.” I said. “That’s sad to hear. Anyway, I know that you’re upset with your father. I just want you to know that he only thinks of you. There’s no need to be mad at him. He just wants to protect you and give you the best in life.” She said. “I know Mom. I’m not mad at Dad but I just want him to understand that Kyle is not what he thinks he is. He’s a good man and he makes me feel so special. I want Dad to be fair to him and I would love it if he gets to know him better.” I said. “I know. Just give your Dad some time to adjust. Maybe he’s just not used to you being in a serious relationship like this one that you have with Kyle.” She said. “Okay Mom. I’ll forget what dad has said as long as he won’t do it again and I want both of you to meet Kyle again. This time, I want you to give him a chance to prove himself. Will you do that Mom?” I said. “Of course. Don’t worry about your Dad, I’ll handle him.” She said. “Thanks mom. Thank you for doing this.” I said as I hugged her. “Anything for you dear. We only want what’s best for you and we want you to be happy always.” She said. “Thanks Mom. I love you.” I said. “You’re welcome.” She said. “I’ll go ahead because I want to prepare our dinner for tonight. You have to eat a lot later.” “That’s great  Mom. I miss your cooking.” I said. “I know that’s why I’ll make it up to you tonight. Okay?” she said as she walked to the door. “Okay Mom.” I said and then she left my room. I felt less troubled after talking to my mom. I felt like a thorn inside of me was taken. Yes that’s what mothers are good at-making everything easier for their children. I am so excited for dinner. I even called Marga so she can join us later. “Is it okay if I bring my cousin? He’s kinda chilling at our house today.” She asked. “It’s okay. Just be here because I know you missed Mom’s cooking as well.” I said. “Yes I do. I really really do. Don’t worry we’ll be there.” She said. “That’s good. See you later.” I said. “See you later Cass.” She said and hung up already. This is gonna be a happy dinner or so I thought because when Marga came a familiar man was with him. It turns out that the cousin she was talking about is none other than Luis. Yes, Luis the annoying man at the party. He is Marga’s cousin who just came home after studying abroad. “Hi. It’s nice to see you again, Cassandra.” Luis said. “You two know each other already?” Marga asked. Oh you have no idea my friend. This guy, who you claim as a cousin, is the one who almost ruined my night. “Yeah you could say that we’ve been acquainted.” I said. “Oh wow. That’s great. I don’t have to introduce the two of you.” She said. “By the way, where’s Tita? I missed her and Tito as well.” “They’re in the kitchen preparing for our dinner, I guess.” I said. “Hands on as always. Anyways, I’ll leave you two here. I’ll just go greet them.” She said. “Sure cous, I’m sure Cassandra won’t mind.” Luis said. “Yes of course. I don’t mind at all.” I said. “Okay then.” Marga said as she walked towards our kitchen. I am left with Luis in the receiving area and I don’t know if I should offer him something or just ignore his presence. In the end, he broke the silence with his arrogance. “I think we really are meant to be. I just wanted to have a good time tonight and I had no idea that you are the best friend Marga has been talking about.” He said. “We are not meant to be okay? This is just a coincidence.” I said. “Will you stop it with me? I am not interested with you.” “Ouch that really hurts you know. You have thus very angelic face yet your words sting so bad.” He said. “Well, I’m no angel and I don’t have plans to be. So you better behave and stop pestering me.” I said. “Okay. I won’t” he said. “Hey guys, come on. It’s dinner time.” Marga said as she emerged from the kitchen. We headed to the dining area and my parents were already there. Marga introduced Luis to my parents and they recognized him as the guy from the party and the son of their business socialite friends. “It’s good that you’re starting to handle your family’s business. Some people would just drop the responsibility and do whatever it is that they like.” Dad told Luis as they were talking about Luis’ work. “I enjoy it a lot, Tito. It’s my way of saying thank you to my parents who has been so supportive of me.” Luis said. “That’s what a man should be, willing to accept responsibilities. Your parents must be so proud of you.” Dad said. “I hope so Tito. It’s the least I could do and besides I’m having fun with what I’m doing.”  Luis said. “That’s good when you like what you’re doing that’s where you’ll be successful.” Mom said. “Yes Tita I guess that’s the secret towards success. You just have to love what you’re doing.” He said. “He has always been the most responsible cousin I have Tito.” Marga said. “You are really an amazing man. I hope my Cassandra here finds a man just like you.” Dad said. “Dad…” I said “What? I’m just saying.” Dad said. “Okay let’s stop talking about that. Let’s have wine instead.” Mom said. “That’s a good idea Tita.” Marga chimed in as she felt the tension. The dinner went by and I’m so happy to have survived it. It wasn’t as relaxing as I thought it would be. After the dinner, Marga and Luis decided to leave as it is getting late already “Thank you so much for the dinner Tita. Your cooking never fails to amaze me.” Marga said. “I’m glad you like it. I hope we can do this as often as possible.” Mom said. “I like that idea Tita.” Marga said “Excuse me ladies, I think Marga and I have to leave already.” Luis said. “Thank you so much for having me tonight.” “You’re welcome Luis. I hope you had a great time.” Mom said. “You’re leaving already?” Dad said. “Yes Tito we need to leave already. As much as we would love to stay, we can’t. We have work tomorrow morning.” Luis said. “It’s good that you prioritize your business. Well, we won’t hold you for long.” Dad said. “Thanks Tito. We’ll surely come back soon.” Marga said. “Anytime, anytime.” Dad said. We walked them to the door as they were about to leave. “Goodnight Cassandra.” Luis said. “We’ll go ahead.” He said as he turned to my parents. “Goodnight Luis. Goodnight Marga. You guys take care,” I said. “Drive carefully.” Dad said. We waved goodbye at them as they leave. We went inside and as I was about to go upstairs dad called me. “Luis is a good man. You should get to know him more. I like him for you. Very career oriented.” He said. “Dad, please let’s not talk about this. I have a boyfriend and I love him.” I said. “Your boyfriend is not good for you. He doesn’t even have a decent job.” He said. “Dad please you have to respect whatever there is between me and Kyle. Please respect our relationship.” I said. “I’m just saying.” He said. “Hon, that’s enough. I told Cassy that we are gonna give Kyle a chance. I think we should schedule a dinner with him.” Mom said. “Thanks Mom.” I said. “Okay, we’ll do that.” Dad said. “Thanks Dad.” I said. “I’ll go upstairs. Good night to both of you.” I kissed them both. I am happy that they are finally giving my boyfriend a chance. I hope it turns out well. I took my phone and called Kyle. He answered on the first ring. “Hey babe. What’s up?” he said. “I have a good news babe. My parents want to meet you soon. They want to have dinner with you.” I said happily. “Really? That’s great!” he said. “I’m so happy but I’m nervous though.” “No, don’t be. I’ll be there too you know. I know you can do it. They’ll like you for sure this time.” I said. “Thanks Babe. I love you.” He said. “I love you too.” I said. “Good night.” “Good night.” He said. “Sleep well Babe.” I turned off my phone and drifted to sleep.
