CHAPTER1
Rowan's pov: I woke up to the Sound of my alarm Screaming like it was Personally offended that I was Still alive. My hand fumbled across the bedside table knocking over an empty bottle of lotion, a receipt from last week, and Something I didn’t even remember owning. The alarm finally Stopped after I Slammed it twice. There was Silence then Chaos Started again. “Rowan!” Atlas Shouted from the other room. “The water’s gone again!” “I know!” I Shouted back already Sitting up fast. “Give me five minutes!” There was a Pause. “You Said that twenty minutes ago!” I groaned dragging a hand down my face. “I’m Coming now!” My room looked like my life had Physically exploded inside it… Clothes on Chairs, books Stacked like unstable towers, a half-packed bag from yesterday’s job and Somewhere under it all, my dignity. I grabbed the least wrinkled Shirt I Could find. It Still wasn’t good but I didn’t have the luxury of Caring. Bills don’t wait for appearances neither does hunger. Atlas was Standing by the kitchen Sink when I got there, turning the tap like it had Personally betrayed him. “It’s off again,” he Said looking at me with that Same tired Concern he tried to hide. He was only Sixteen but Sometimes he looked older than me. “I’ll go Check with the landlord after my Shift,” I Said Pouring water from a Stored gallon into a Pot. “That’s what you Said last week.” I Paused. He was right. I forced a Smile anyway. “Then I’ll Say it louder this week.” That got a Small laugh out of him. By the time I left the house, my Shoes were mismatched and my hair was doing whatever it wanted. But I was used to it. Life didn’t Pause for People who Couldn’t afford it.. I had three jobs lined up that day... Three. And Somehow I Still didn’t feel like it was enough. The City was already alive when I got outside. I Checked my Phone. Interview reminder: PureSpace Solutions – 11:00 AM I frowned. That was Supposed to be my “big break” interview. The one Brielle Swore would Change my life. “Luxury Cleaning Company,” she had Said. “They Pay like Crazy.” Luxury Cleaning Sounded like a joke honestly. Cleaning was Cleaning. But I needed that Crazy money. Atlas needed School fees. And I needed air that didn’t feel like Pressure. By the time I reached the building, I already felt underdressed. PureSpace Solutions didn’t look like a workplace. It looked like a glass monument to Perfection. Everything Shimmered. Too Clean. Too quiet. Too… Controlled. Even the air felt filtered. I Stepped Closer to the entrance and immediately noticed the Polished glass doors without fingerprints, Staff in Crisp uniforms, People moving like they were trained not to exist too loudly. I Swallowed. “Okay, Rowan,” I whispered to myself. “Don’t embarrass yourself. Just… don’t touch anything.” That Should’ve been easy but it wasn’t. Because the moment I reached for the door, I bumped into Someone hard. My Coffee Cup flew. Time Slowed in the most humiliating way Possible and brown liquid arced through the air then landed Perfectly on a man’s white Shirt and expensive-looking Suit. My brain Stopped working and the man froze Completely. He looked horrified. His eyes dropped to his Chest like he Couldn’t Process what he was Seeing. Then Slowly he looked up at me. And I Swear the air Changed.. His gaze was Sharp and Cold. Like I had just Committed a Crime. “You—” his voice Came out low, Clipped and tense. “Do you understand what you’ve done?” My mouth opened but nothing Came out at first. Then I blurted, “It was just Coffee. Not acid.” That was the wrong thing to Say. His jaw tightened. I noticed Something Strange then his hands were Clenched at his Sides like he was Physically holding himself back from reacting. “Step back,” he Said instantly. I frowned. “What?” “Step back!” Something about the tone made my Skin Prickle. Still I didn’t move immediately. That Seemed to make it worse. His breathing Changed… Like the Situation was Crawling under his Skin. I Stepped back Slowly. “Are you okay?” I asked even though he Clearly wasn’t. That earned me a look so Sharp it Could’ve Cut glass. “I am not okay,” he Said flatly. A Staff member rushed forward, horrified. “Sir Cassian—” Cassian. So that was his name. It Suited him in the worst way. Everything about him Screamed Control. And right now, he looked like I had thrown Chaos directly into his bloodstream. “I’m so Sorry,” I said quickly, reality Catching up to me. “I didn’t See you—I was rushing and I—” “Stop talking,” he interrupted. I blinked. “I Should Stop talking?” My throat tightened Partly from embarrassment and Partly from anger. I didn’t like being Shut down like that. He turned away from me abruptly already removing his jacket like it Physically offended him. “I need sanitation,” he Said Sharply. Sanitation? Was he Serious? I watched as People around him rushed like ants reacting to a fallen king. And I Stood there Still holding my empty Coffee Cup feeling Suddenly like I didn’t belong in the Same world as him. After a few minutes he left without another word. No apology…. No acknowledgment. Like I was nothing more than a Stain that had briefly existed in his morning. I finally entered the building for my interview. My Confidence was gone Completely but I didn’t leave. I needed this job too badly to walk away. As I Sat waiting in the Pristine white interview room, my Phone buzzed. A message from HR Popped up: “Ms. Vale, your interviewer today will be Mr. Cassian Thorne.” I froze.. Slowly I looked up toward the glass office wall across the hall. And the man from outside earlier was Standing there watching me.
