The Forbidden Glance
The sun was setting over Napa Valley, spreading golden light across the hills covered in grapevines. The warm breeze carried the smell of ripe grapes and oak barrels. Laughter, music, and clinking glasses filled the air at the annual Harvest Moon Wine Festival. It was the biggest event of the season, where Napa elites gathered to show off their wine and make deals. Long white tables stood under strings of fairy lights. Bottles of wine were placed like trophies on every table, all carefully made by the families who were proud to share their names on the labels. For Ryan Ellington, this festival wasn’t about the wine. It was about surviving the night. At twenty-four, Ryan the heir to the Ellington family, a dynasty once know for Napa finest vintages, dressed in a perfect navy-blue suit that fit his tall, broad frame, stood beside his father, Richard Ellington. Richard’s smile was all charm, but his eyes were calculating, as he shook hands with a local distributor. Ryan knew the routine: nod, smile, say the right things. The Ellingtons where here to maintain their image. Across the festival, Bella Scott walked quietly through the crowd. Her green dress sparkle under the lights, and her red hair was tied loosely into a braid. She was twenty-two and carried herself with a calm grace. She held a glass of her family’s Merlot, made by Scott Vineyards, the winery her grandfather had won in a risky card game years ago, a game that had ruined the Ellingtons. Bella wasn’t there for fun. Her father, Vincent Scott, stood nearby, deep in conversation, and her mother, Grace, watched the Ellingtons from a distance with a cold smile. The festival was one of the only times the Scotts and Ellingtons were in the same place without fighting. It was meant to be peaceful, but the air was filled with tension and old grudges. “I heard Richard Ellington tried to buy the winery back again,” someone whispered. “Vincent laughed in his face,” came the reply. Ryan could feel the weight of those whispers pressing on him. He stepped away from his father, needing a break. He made his way toward a quiet corner under a gazebo where the music faded and the vineyard stretched out in silence, and for a moment, he could breathe. That’s when he saw her. Bella stood near a table of her family’s wines. She wasn’t smiling, just gently tracing the label on a bottle with her fingers. Her dress caught the last bit of sunlight, and she looked like she belonged there, like part of the land. Ryan couldn’t look away. She felt his eyes before she saw him. She looked up, and for one second, their eyes met. Her lips parted slightly, a soft blush rising on her cheeks. Then she looked away, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. Ryan knew who she was. Everyone did. Bella Scott, the granddaughter of the man who took everything from the Ellingtons. But at that moment, she wasn’t the enemy. She was just... Bella. Without thinking, he started walking toward her. His mind told him to stop, this could only end badly. But his feet didn’t listen. He moved through the crowd, dodging a waiter with a tray of champagne. Bella sensed him again and turned. Her heart jumped when she saw him up close. He was tall, confident, with kind eyes and a smile that made her forget who he was, almost. “Enjoying the festival?” Ryan asked, his voice calm and warm. Bella raised one eyebrow, guarded. “As much as anyone can when everyone’s talking about your family.” He smiled, amused. “Sounds familiar.” “You’re Ryan Ellington,” she said quietly. “And you’re Bella Scott.” He looked at her, not like she was a rival. “Does that mean we’re supposed to hate each other?” She gave a small laugh. “Probably.” They stood in silence for a moment, not awkward, just curious. The music and laughter kept going around them, but it felt far away. “I remember seeing you last year,” Ryan said. “You were drawing something in a notebook.” Bella looked surprised. “You noticed that?” “Hard not to. You looked like you wished you were anywhere else.” She smiled. “That’s true. These things are more about pretending than celebrating.” “I get it,” he said, glancing back at his father. “I’d rather be working in the fields than pretending to be the perfect son.” Bella studied him, her expression softer now. “You don’t seem like the perfect anything.” Ryan laughed. “Don’t tell my dad that.” They were just starting to feel comfortable when Bella glanced over and saw her mother watching, eyes sharp, lips pressed thin. “I should go,” Bella said. “My mom doesn’t miss a thing.” Ryan nodded. “Maybe I’ll see you again. Somewhere less crowded.” “Maybe.” She looked at him one last time. “Be careful, Ryan Ellington. Napa doesn’t like rule-breakers.” He grinned. “Good thing I like a little trouble.” Bella walked back toward her parents. Vincent was distracted, arguing with a supplier about delayed shipments to notice her, but her mother’s stare followed her like a shadow. “Who were you talking to?” Grace asked. Bella sipped her wine, keeping her voice light. “Just someone from the festival. No one important.” Her mother didn’t believe her but let it go, for now. Bella glanced back. Ryan was talking to his father’s business friends again, the charm back in place. But then, for a second, he looked right at her. That same spark passed between them. Later, as the festival ended, Ryan stood beside his parents while his mother, Vivian, lectured him. “You need to pay attention,” she said sharply. “The Scotts are always watching. We can’t afford distractions.” Ryan nodded, but his thoughts were still with Bella. That moment they shared, it felt real. Dangerous, yes. But also exciting. Meanwhile, Bella sat in the back of her family’s car, looking out at the moonlit vineyards. Her fingers touched her sketchbook. She’d doodled a pair of hazel eyes without realizing it. Ryan’s eyes. She knew this was trouble. Their families were enemies. This couldn’t go anywhere. And yet, something inside her whispered that tonight had changed everything.
