Hearts of Stone, Untraveled Paths: The Dragon's Dilemma
Once upon a time, dragons roamed the earth alongside humans. Legend has it that these majestic creatures were once humans themselves. Many tales suggest that they were cursed, bound to their dragon forms unless they could awaken their hearts of stone once more. Some embraced their dragon sides fully, never wishing to return to their human lives until the end. Others longed to reclaim their humanity but found their stone hearts silent and unresponsive. Among them was one who preferred the freedom of being a dragon but yearned for just one moment when his heart might beat again.
During this time, in a kingdom where incredible creatures roamed, there also lived a princess known for her extraordinary gift. She had a magical touch that seemed to illuminate the goodness in everyone she met, even in those who might not have the best intentions. She was always there to listen to the concerns of her people, her mere presence soothing their worries. With her kind words, she could ease tensions between opposing factions, fostering peace in the land. Whenever she noticed someone struggling, she would eagerly extend her hand, her comforting touch bringing a sense of tranquility. Her spirit was as light as a feather, yet her resolve was as strong as steel, evident in the radiant smile that could brighten even the darkest of nights.
Despite the immense love and warmth that surrounded her—coming from her friends, family, and all those who admired her—Princess Genoa couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing from her life. One afternoon, she gazed out of her castle window, taking in the perfection that lay outside. The trees were laden with fruit, flowers bloomed in vibrant colors, birds chirped, the river flowed calmly, and fish glided gracefully in the lake. As she pondered, she wondered, "What else is out there? What could fill this void? Is life only about this seemingly perfect routine? Is there something I haven't discovered yet? Could someone be waiting for me beyond these familiar borders?" Unbeknownst to her, she had begun to feel restless in her seemingly flawless world.
Although the dragons all have their own castles, they often gather at Mount Devereux, a haven where they can truly be themselves without the prying eyes of humans. There, they engage in playful boasting about whose wings are more expansive, whose horns are sharper, and who can spit fire the longest. Thanks to their remarkable intelligence, distant kingdoms frequently seek their counsel in exchange for gold, which bestows upon them incredible wealth.
Among them is Uilliam, thought to be one of the oldest dragons around. Unlike some who might ponder a return to their human lives, Uilliam has no such desires. Because of this, he's held in high esteem by the other dragons. As one of the founding elders, he played a crucial role in establishing the rules that guide their interactions, especially their amicable relationships with humans. However, after many long years of mediating disputes and providing leadership, he dreams of a peaceful solitude as he approaches the end of his journey. Uilliam sees promise in a young dragon who could inherit his wisdom and leadership skills, but this young one is still grappling with what path to follow.
They call Ioulos "The Confused Creature" because, while he treasures the freedom of being a dragon, he harbors a longing for the fleeting sensations of a beating heart. All the dragons understand what it means for their stone hearts to awaken once again, but for Ioulos, the idea of reclaiming his humanity is not tempting; he simply wishes to understand the feelings of a responsive heart while remaining a dragon. "Ioulos, my boy!" Uilliam called out. "Yes, my lord," Ioulos replied. "Come here," Uilliam urged, and Ioulos sat down beside him. "My boy, I've lived longer than most creatures, both beast and man, can recall. It's time for me to seek my eternal peace. Yet, I can't just fade away knowing our kind lacks a strong leader."
"I apologize, my lord, but I must respectfully disagree. Our horde is strong enough on its own, even if you were to unite all the other men and beasts. Any dragon you choose to train will make a good leader, maybe even a better one than you," Ioulos responded.
"Ah!" Uilliam exclaimed. "I've tried to guide you as my protégé, but your fascination with your dormant heart holds me back from fully supporting you. I've witnessed dragons who embraced their true selves, and I believe you, more than any of them, can make our thunder echo the loudest. I've heard tales of those who failed to regain their humanity, and it's our responsibility to steer them away from tyranny, whether against us or the humans we coexist with. When will you accept that you can only choose one path, not both?"
Ioulos took a deep breath, releasing a sigh of smoke, which served as his only reply. This wasn't the first time he'd had such a conversation with the elders, especially with Uilliam, and he knew that their words held a certain truth. Not a single one of them has managed to find a way back to their humanity, which suggests their hearts might have been meant to remain silent forever. Some even say the tale of them being humans once was just a story, but that idea has haunted the young dragon for as long as he can remember. There has to be more to them than just their giant bones, and somewhere beyond these towering mountains might lie the answers he seeks.
Just another day at Doersam Palace, Princess Genoa was wandering around the castle grounds, exchanging warm greetings with everyone she met. "Good morning, Your Highness," called out Oliva, her devoted attendant. "Good morning, Oliva! Where are you off to?" the princess inquired. "I'm going to town to grab some supplies, Your Highness," Oliva replied. "Oh, I don't have any plans today! Can I join you?" the princess asked eagerly. Oliva hesitated, "I'm not sure if that's a good idea, Your Highness; I must respectfully decline." But the princess wouldn't take no for an answer, "Oh come on, Oliva! We won't be long." In the end, Oliva relented, "If you insist, Your Highness, it would be my pleasure to accompany you."
This wasn't Princess Genoa's first trip to town; she cherished these outings. Each visit was a chance to discover something new, sample delicious finger foods, try on fresh clothes from local shops, admire the homes of the townsfolk, and browse through exciting books from distant lands. Dragons roamed the earth alongside humans, and it was not uncommon for them to visit the town when they grew weary of their castle solitude or sought company beyond their kind.
