Overwhelmed by kindness

1080 Words
I jumped off the bed so fast my eyes twirled. My knees also reminded me I just cut off the most important bond I'd ever formed in my life. He caught me before I landed on the ground again and pushed me back to the bed. "Your Majesty, I shouldn't be here," I argued, my heart threatening to leave my chest. This was too much, even if I was still Luna which I honestly never truly were. "Says who?" He raised an eyebrow in question. "I... well.. people are gonna talk. I'm fine now, I have to go back and ask the head cook where I'm supposed to sleep." "I'm your King. No one can question me. Well, except that fat head Orion, but that's not the issue here, is it?" "I'm just a servant and you rescued me like that. I've already taken too much from your kindness. I don't want to intrude." "Let me worry about how much of my kindness I can give," he replied and walked off before I could say anything else. The pain didn't slow down, but I couldn't help looking around the room. My world has only revolved around basic finery and basements. This was way out of my mental league. I couldn't name some of the materials in the room; the fur on the bed was nothing like I'd ever seen. Same as whatever that couch was made of. Even the colour of the room looked like it was from a different world. I was still staring around when King Cassian walked back into the room with a bowl and another small container in his hands. "Tell me exactly where it hurts," he said, dropping the items on the bedside table. "The pain from the burn is already fading so I can manage and I'm sure the mate bond burn will be there for a few more days so there's no need to do anything." "You're as stubborn as you're strong. Lie on your stomach." My eyes widened before I could stop them. "Your Majesty.. I .." "If you think I'll try to seduce a girl in pain, then I must say I'm deeply offended." My cheeks flamed red and I quickly turned around and lay on the bed. What was wrong with me? I hid my face on the bed, covering it with my hands, hoping the embarrassment can fade away. Why would I think such stupid things? The King, wanting me in such a way? Yeah, that's incredibly stupid. I've heard the story about how they're cursed and can't recognise their mates and their Lycans are also a bit deranged so anyone they sleep with rarely lives to tell the tale. There's no way he'll rescue me just to f**k me to death. My thoughts came to a screeching halt when I felt a cold towel on my neck. It wiped gradually, through all the places Laura had scalded me with hot water. I bit my lip, trying to ignore the pain but also, stifling my reaction to this. Kindness isn't something I'm used to. From anyone. At least without a hefty price. So why was he doing this? His hands replaced the towel and I felt him rubbing the balm all over my wounds. "Raise your head," he commanded gently and I did immediately. He continued the ministration, until I was glossy all over. "Turn around." My body was rushing to obey before I had even processed the instruction. That's how powerful he felt. Lying on my back, I was forced to actually look at him. Before now, I had only ever heard of him. Them. Three men who were different versions of the same image King Cassian was the one everyone saw, King Orion was the one who kept the barbarians far from our doorsteps and the other one, no one ever knew what he was up to or even remembered his name. But he was just as deadly. During the whole ordeal with Laura and my ex-mate, I couldn't look at him out of fear. But as he rubbed ointment on my stomach where the mate bond was cut, I couldn't help myself. Goddess, the man was beautiful. His skin looked like it was someone's job to keep it this smooth and fresh. His beard was perfectly trimmed. The fact that he was unfairly large yet possessed such beautiful physical features was distracting. Almost too distracting. Until he began walking away, I didn't even realise the pain had subsided to a dull ache. "Your Majesty," I whispered, sitting up slowly, "I'm healed?" "Yea," he nodded, showing me the balm, "this is the good stuff. By tomorrow you should be as good as new." Damn. Did I die and was taken to paradise? This felt too real yet too dreamy. He returned and looked at me himself, making me want to disappear into the ground. He'll definitely be disappointed, I'm nothing like all the girls that have powerful Alphas as fathers that troop into the Palace every other day for their attention. "I should get going," I murmured, "I've truly exceeded my quota of —" "My kindness. I've tried to understand that but it's not registering. But since you insist, I'll let you go. Although I need to keep my eyes on you." My chest hollowed. "I'm not a threat, Your Majesty, I swear to the Moon goddess." His eyes narrowed, "Whoever said you were?" "Oh?" "You're the one constantly in danger because everyone thinks you not having a wolf should be a death sentence. I'll talk to the head cook. You'll be assigned to my room where I can keep an eye on you. The pay is better too so you don't have to do this forever. Wait, are you crying?" "I'm sorry, I can't help.. Gosh, I'm embarrassing myself," I sobbed, trying to clean my eyes. "You're allowed to be overwhelmed. After the day you've had, it's expected. Now off you go; a King needs to rest this head every once in a while." I fell on my knees, "Thank you Your Majesty. You've saved me more than you can ever tell." "I'm glad you're safe now, but get up on your feet. I literally just did what I wear this crown to do, okay?" I nodded, forcing myself back to my feet. As I headed to the door, he cleared his throat, "Eleanor, that's the door to my bathroom." Oh grounds, swallow me now.
