The first slap

Finding the rooms wasn't so difficult as I'd expected. My sense of direction wasn't as skewed as it usually was. The room I was given was minimal, exactly what I needed, nothing more. But it was mine. No one would wake me up in the middle of the night with cruelty that I don't deserve. I woke up the next morning without a sliver of pain anywhere on my body. A bit late which I promised myself not to do again. This is my second chance at life and I have to make something out of myself. Some of the girls were still in the wing, bathing was in a general bathhouse. When I got there, it was more luxurious than I expected. There was a beautiful pool at the end of the stalls and then large basins and bath tubs in each of the ten big bathrooms. Shower stalls that looked very clean, mirrors that showed my scars all filled the place. I didn't linger though, I was later already. When I finished bathing, I dressed up a maid gown I saw in the wardrobe in my room and headed to the door. Only it refused to open. I'd not locked it, I remember vividly. It was a female only bathroom so I felt safe enough to just close it but as I pulled it now, I wonder if there's some mechanism I wasn't aware of. This whole place was so sophisticated I felt like I'd come from some ancient village. But the longer I tried opening, the more frustration I felt. There's no way someone wasn't out there, I could hear footsteps. "Hello? Someone please help me with the door!" I yelled, panic in my voice. Instead of help, I heard snickers that sent chills down my spine. Was this.. intentional? Did someone lock me in here on purpose? But.. why? "Please, I have to go to work," I begged, pulling the door with all the strength I could muster. Nobody answered, instead I heard the other door opening and footsteps shuffling out until everywhere went silent. Goddess, how am I supposed to keep his Majesty's favour if I show up for my first day on the job hours late? I pounded at the door because I had no idea what else to do. It felt like everything was going so well and now collapsing and I just couldn't do anything about it. My body slacked on the wall and a flood of tears poured from my eyes. I'd not processed everything that had happened, I hadn't had the time. But this made me realise I'd been a ticking time bomb. The memory of my former mate giving Laura the approval to hurt me came in first, followed by the actual pain of that water on my body. Everything kept coming, all the things he said, how I'd been useful until I wasn't.. And when the tears slowed down, I tried pulling the door open again and it was still locked, not sure why I expected anything different, I cried hard, soaking my gown with tears. Finally exhausted, I crumble to the now dry ground and put my head on my knees. I was already imagining how I'd get thrown out of the palace when I heard somebody opening the door. "Hello!" I jumped to my feet, "please help me! Somebody locked me inside!" The person cursed and soon, the handle began turning. Hope bloomed in my chest and the she pushed the door open. "Thank you so much," I gushed, "can I hug you? I'm so grateful!" "No. Go upstairs, King Cassian's room needs cleaning. He doesn't like dirt. And next time, if Tiana is in the bathroom, don't bathe." She walked away after that info dump. I swallowed hard and walked out after her. The only joy I knew was that I still had a job, which means everything else can be solved. "Excuse me!" I ran to the girl, she looked like she didn't want to be disturbed but I didn't have a choice. "What?" She asked, not breaking a stride. "Cleaning. Yes. Where do I get the cleaning supplies? I'm supposed to clean his room, right? What about his office?" "The kitchen storage is the third door before the kitchen and no, you won't be cleaning his office. Just the room, living room, toilet and —" "Yes, thank you. I get it now. Thank you so much, you really saved me back there!" She ignored me and kept walking. Our paths divided and I wished I'd gotten her name but I doubt she would have told me. Will I become like her at some point here? Cold and unfeeling? Well, I'm already half way there, I just had hopes that working here would let me be myself again. But it can't be worse than my former Pack, right? I got the cleaning supplies and was heading to the stairs when somebody walked into my path. Directly from the side. There's no way that wasn't intentional. Still, I stepped back for her and instead of climbing the stairs, she walked towards me, narrowing her eyes. "What can I help you with?" I demanded, trying to sound fierce. "Where are you going to, wolfless?" "Huh, that's quite original," I scoffed, "and I'm going to do my job just like you should too!" "I knew it!" She chuckled, raising her arms in mock surrender. "Knew what? I'm already late, can you move?" "His Majesty saves you from your deserved punishment once and now you think you're better than the rest of us?" "What are you talking about? I just want do my job!" "You liar! You want to throw yourself at him before the Ritual Hunt so he can keep giving you special attention." "Throwing myself at... Girl, get out of my way, you're nuts!" "Shut up! You just got here last night and you're already promoted to his personal maid? There's twenty people on that line before you!" "They can take their complaints to him or the Head cook! I was given a job and I need to do it so get off the road or I'll have to report you to him!" "You'll do what?" She sneered, taking a step closer to my face. "I'm not scared of you," I hissed, "whatever game you're playing, I'm not interested. I just want to do my job. If you try to stop me, I'll —" Slap! Great. First day on the job and I'm already getting slapped.
