“Mom, are we going to have enough money to live on?” The question spews from my mouth at breakfast the next day. I can’t hold it in any longer. My mom immediately stops scrambling eggs, lays down the spatula and turns to me. “Don’t worry, Mark. Your father had life insurance, and I have some other coverage at work. We’ll be okay for a while. After that, we’ll see.” “We’ll see?” That doesn’t sound reassuring. “If we need to make some changes, we will. But I still have a job, and we’re going to pull through this together.” “Are we going to have to sell the house?” “I don’t think so. We’re pretty close to paying it off,” Mom says. “I hope to continue making mortgage payments.” “I could quit school and get a job. Mr. Pavone will probably hire me full-time if I ask.” Mom looks horrified
