I rush home that afternoon, park myself in the living room, and open the drapes so I can see the driveway. I spring to my feet every time I hear a car coming down Cedar Brook Road. My stomach turns like a cement mixer. I can’t wait to tell Mom that I’m a co-captain, but I dread telling her I won’t be accepting the honor. In the back of my mind, I’m hoping she has some magical solution to my dilemma. I turn on the TV to get my mind off things. Coincidentally, ESPN is airing a feature on athletes who walked away in their prime—guys like Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps—only to come back because they missed their sports too much. They may be superstars, and I’m just an ordinary kid, but we have that much in common. I can’t give up basketball cold turkey. I know I’ll miss it too much. Bein
