The next day in school, I’m on top of the world when I see Su. I called her the night before to let her know I’m staying on the team. I’d been mentally preparing myself to quit for so long that I still feel giddy when I think about playing. “I told my mom I’m going to work at Pavone’s every chance I get until basketball starts. I still want to earn money for the family, but I don’t have to worry about Danny anymore. She says she’ll find him rides after school.” “I can help out with Danny, at least until our season starts,” Su says. “I’m so happy you’re not going to quit the team! You’ve worked too hard and you’ve gotten so much better. It would be a shame not to play.” But her encouragement comes with words of caution. “You’re going to have a tough time handling school and work together
