Cathy waited until the early hours of the morning and slipped out of the women’s shelter. It would be a long walk to the police department to get her car, and trying to do it with her bag of belongings would make it harder. Her eyes searched the area before she started her journey. She didn’t get far when an old man in an old beat-up truck slowed down beside her. “Hey, are you okay,” he asked, but she ignored him, focused on putting one foot in front of the other. He tried again, “Do you need a ride, Miss? Carrying all that stuff will wear out your arms if you’re going more than a few miles.” Cathy sighed and glanced his way, “I’ll manage.
