The tears that built me...
EPISODE 1 — BEFORE LIFE GOT SERIOUS Before life became something heavy… Before hunger had a name… Before pain became normal… There was peace. In the late 90s, inside a noisy compound where many lives were joined together, a child was born into a family that was already full. A father with three wives. A house filled with thirteen children. Different mothers… different stories… but one roof. He came as number eleven in his father’s lineage. And number four from his own mother. Eight days later, his father looked at him carefully… like he saw something others couldn’t see. Then he gave him a name: Mobayonile. A name that didn’t beg for acceptance. A name that carried resistance. A name that sounded like a fight… even before the battle began. But at that time… nobody was thinking about struggle. The house was alive. Children ran around barefoot. Voices echoed from morning till night. Food was shared. Laughter was constant. And somewhere in that environment, a quiet lesson lived in everyone’s heart: “Hold on to faith… no matter what.” Nobody knew that one day… That lesson would become survival. EPISODE 2 — THE WOMAN WHO NEVER STOPPED If strength had a face… it was his mother. Even before Bayo could understand anything, life had already tested her. An incident in her early years damaged her right eye. Not completely blind… but never the same again. For most people, that would slow them down. But not her. She moved like someone who didn’t have the luxury to be weak. Morning to night… Rain or sun… Tired or not… She worked. Not for comfort. Not for luxury. Just so her children could eat… and go to school. Sometimes, nobody noticed her efforts. Sometimes, people talked. But she didn’t stop. To Bayo, she wasn’t just a mother. She was survival in human form. --- EPISODE 3 — THE KIND OF CHILDHOOD YOU DON’T TALK ABOUT From the outside, it looked normal. Children playing. Running. Laughing. But inside that normal life… something was missing. Food was not always there. Money was never enough. Bayo started noticing it slowly. There were days he went to school with torn trousers. Days he sat in class, not because he was full… but because he had no choice. Hunger became quiet. Not something to complain about… just something to endure. After school, while others went home to rest, Bayo had his own routine. He would go and pick waterleaf. Not for fun. Not for pocket money. But so there would be something in the pot at home. At that age… he didn’t have the words for poverty. But he was living inside it. --- EPISODE 4 — WHEN REALITY STARTS WHISPERING There’s a moment in every child’s life… When play starts to fade, And reality begins to whisper. For Bayo… it came early. School became unstable. Not because he didn’t want it… But because life didn’t always allow it. There were times he stayed at home. Not sick. Not suspended. Just… unable to go. And every morning, he would stand there and watch his mates pass by in their uniforms. Laughing. Talking. Moving forward. While he stood still. That kind of feeling doesn’t shout. It stays inside… and slowly changes you. --- EPISODE 5 — A BOY WITH TOO MANY THOUGHTS Even with everything… Bayo still dreamed. Sometimes, he saw himself as a footballer. Free. Running. Escaping everything. Other times… he imagined something different. He wanted to be a teacher. Not just to teach… But to build a place where children like him wouldn’t be left behind. At a young age, he would gather children around him and start asking questions. Like a teacher. Like someone who already knew his purpose. People might have seen it as play. But inside him… it was serious. Because deep down… Bayo didn’t just want a better life. He wanted to create one. --- EPISODE 6 — WHEN DARKNESS FULLY ARRIVED Life didn’t warn them. It just happened. Around the age of fourteen… His mother lost her sight completely. No more “managing.” No more “it’s getting better.” Darkness. Total. The same woman who had been carrying everything… could no longer see the world she was fighting for. And in that moment… Bayo’s life shifted. Not slowly. Not gently. Completely. Because from that day… He was no longer just a son. He became her eyes. --- EPISODE 7 — A CHILD BECOMES RESPONSIBILITY Morning routines changed. Before even thinking about school, Bayo had a duty. He would hold his mother’s hand and guide her to the shop. Step by step. Carefully. Patiently. Other children his age were thinking about assignments and games. Bayo was thinking about balance. About survival. About how not to let everything fall apart. Sometimes, he helped in the shop. Sometimes, he went for labour work. Sometimes… he did both in the same day. And slowly… Childhood slipped away without asking for permission. --- EPISODE 8 — THE QUESTION NO CHILD SHOULD ASK One morning… everything came together in one moment. Bayo stood in his school uniform. Bag on his shoulder. His mother beside him. As they stepped outside, he saw men working nearby. Carrying loads. Earning money. He stopped walking. Then he asked quietly… “Mummy… can I not go to school today? Let me work… so we can eat.” Silence. The kind that hurts. His mother turned to him… And tears came instantly. Not because she didn’t understand. But because she did. “Can you do it?” she asked. Bayo didn’t hesitate. “Yes.” That answer… Was the end of something. And the beginning of something heavier. --- EPISODE 9 — ₦500 THAT MEANT EVERYTHING That day, Bayo worked like a grown man. Under the sun. With pain in his body. With thoughts in his head he couldn’t explain. At closing time… His classmates passed by. Some laughed. Some stared. Some respected him. But Bayo didn’t react. Because in that moment… He understood something they didn’t. By the end of the day, he was paid: ₦500. Small to the world. But heavy to him. When he got home and placed the money in his mother’s hand… She cried. He cried. And together… they prayed. Because sometimes… That’s all you have left. --- EPISODE 10 — MOVING, BUT NOT ESCAPING After everything… they left. They moved to his mother’s family house. New place. New faces. New environment. It felt like change. But struggle doesn’t disappear like that. It follows. Things were slightly better. But not easy. And Bayo… He kept moving. Because by now, he understood something clearly: Life was not going to slow down for him. --- EPISODE 11 — A DIFFERENT KIND OF HOPE The new environment gave something small… but important. Opportunity. Bayo got admission into a school again. Not the best. Not perfect. But it was a chance. And he took it seriously. Because he knew what it felt like to be left behind. This time… he didn’t want to stand and watch again. --- EPISODE 12 — EDUCATION OR SURVIVAL He chose education. But survival didn’t choose him back. School was there… But pressure didn’t reduce. Feeding was still a problem. Money was still tight. And every day felt like a decision: “Do I focus on school… or do I help my family survive?” There was no correct answer. Only sacrifice. --- EPISODE 13 — THE SILENT MOCKERY People talked. They always do. Some mocked their situation. Some pitied them. Some acted like help was possible… but never came through. And Bayo saw it. He learned something important: Not everyone who looks capable… will help you. That truth stayed with him. --- EPISODE 14 — THE BROTHER WHO UNDERSTOOD Among everyone… There was one person who truly understood him. His senior brother. They worked together. They struggled together. They didn’t need too many words. They just knew. And in a life full of pressure… That kind of connection mattered. --- EPISODE 15 — WHEN PRESSURE DOUBLES Whenever his brother went to school… Everything became heavier. More work. More responsibility. More thinking. Bayo had to step up. Not because he was ready. But because there was no one else. --- EPISODE 16 — THE REALIZATION Around sixteen… Bayo began to see life differently. He realized something painful: There were people who could help them. People who had the capacity to change their situation. But help didn’t come. Not because it was impossible. But because people see things differently. That realization didn’t break him. But it hardened something inside him. --- EPISODE 17 — GROWING INTO PRESSURE At this point… Bayo was no longer a child in his mind. Even if life still treated him like one. He started thinking deeper. About life. About survival. About the future. Because one thing was clear: Nobody was coming to save him. --- EPISODE 18 — DREAMS THAT REFUSED TO DIE Even with everything… His dreams didn’t die. They reduced… They adjusted… But they didn’t disappear. Football still lived somewhere in him. Teaching still called him quietly. Because some dreams… Refuse to die, no matter the environment. --- EPISODE 19 — TRYING, FAILING, CONTINUING He tried. Different paths. Different ideas. Some worked for a moment. Some didn’t work at all. But he didn’t stop. Because stopping… Was never something life allowed him to learn. --- EPISODE 20 — ACCEPTING REALITY At some point… Bayo accepted something. Life was not fair. Not balanced. Not equal. But acceptance didn’t mean giving up. It meant understanding the game.
