The Night Everything changed
Thunder rumbled overhead.
The rain poured down like the sky was mourning with me.
I knelt in the middle of the wet asphalt, wailing. The cold cut through my soaked dress and into my bones. My lips were blue. My hands trembled uncontrollably.
It was my eighteenth birthday.
And it was the day I was left utterly alone in this world.
Two Hours Earlier
The Uber pulled up to our house.
Laughter was still ringing in my ears from the party. My eighteenth birthday had been everything I'd dreamed it would be—music, food, decorations, and the people I loved most gathered under one roof.
I stepped out of the car, still smiling.
I remember thinking that I wished the night would never end.
I didn't know that it was already over.
The moment I entered the house, something felt wrong.
The laughter was gone.
The silence was deafening.
Then I heard my brother scream.
I froze.
“What's happening?”
I rushed toward the sound.
And stopped.
Several men stood inside our living room.
My heart dropped.
One of them had my brother restrained, while another held my mum back as she struggled desperately to reach him.
“Let him go!” she screamed.
My mum fought and struggled, but she was overpowered.
My dad stood helplessly nearby.
He could only watch.
Tears blurred my vision as I stared at him.
Then one of the men stepped forward.
He had a scar running across his face. He crouched until he was at eye level with my dad.
“Ray,” he said quietly. “My old friend.”
My dad's face changed.
Fear.
Recognition.
“Did you really think you could just walk away?”
My dad shook his head.
“I'll do anything you want,” he said in a low, trembling voice. “I'm the one you have an issue with. Please… let my family go.”
The man's lips curled into a smile.
“Once a member of the gang, always a member.”
He laughed.
It was a cold, unsettling laugh that seemed to fill the entire room.
Then he gave an order.
My dad struggled and screamed.
My mum cried out.
I couldn't move.
I wanted to run to them.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted someone to wake me up and tell me this was all a nightmare.
But I remained frozen.
Then everything changed.
My family was gone.
The men eventually walked out of the house, leaving behind a silence that felt heavier than the storm outside.
I stayed where I was, crying silently.
I didn't know how long I sat there.
Eventually, I forced myself to stand.
My legs trembled beneath me as I slowly walked toward my parents.
“Dad?”
Nothing.
I took another step.
Then I heard it.
A faint whisper.
“Tess…”
I froze.
His voice was barely there.
I rushed closer.
“Dad? Dad, I'm here.”
He tried to speak again.
His lips moved, but the words never came.
His eyes slowly closed.
And then there was silence.
I stared at him.
“No…”
My voice broke.
“No, no, no…”
I reached for him, desperately hoping he'd open his eyes again.
He didn't.
I looked at my mum.
Then at my brother.
My family.
Gone.
The realization hit me all at once.
I was alone.
Completely and utterly alone.
Outside, thunder shook the sky.
Rain poured through the open doorway, soaking the floor around me.
I stumbled outside.
And then I screamed.
I screamed until my throat hurt.
I screamed until there was nothing left inside me but emptiness.
I fell onto the wet asphalt, tears mixing with the rain.
That was the night I lost everything.
My family.
My home.
My innocence.
And the girl I had been before that night disappeared forever.
I didn't know it yet…
but years later, I would discover the truth about my father's past.
And when I did—
I would finally understand why they came for us.
And I would make them regret ever leaving me alive.
