MALEA
The color drained from Cyrus' face.
"You... You lost the baby?"
He took another hesitant step toward me, eyes fixed on the blood staining on the front of my dress.
His nostrils flared again. I could see the desperation in his eyes while trying to make sense of the scents clinging to me, but all he would surely sense was our child I just lost.
It was the real reason why I bothered to come back. I needed him to see, and to make him believe that everything was lost. The other baby's heartbeat is weak, barely heard behind the frantic moment.
"What happened?" he asked, almost close to anger, “Why didn't you call me?!”
My hand moved on its own, slapping him with all the strength I had left.
My whole body trembled, not in physical pain but in pure anger.
“How dare you ask me that question?”
His brows drew together. "I don't understand."
I smiled bitterly and nodded.
“No. You don't."
I reached into my coat pocket, also stained with dirt and blood and pulled out my phone.
The cracked screen lit up as I unlocked it, going to the call logs and shoved it to his chest.
“I called you several times.”
Guilt filled his eyes, but I no longer cared.
"Malea..."
"I called while I was being chased by rogues claiming to take revenge on you. When I failed to reach you through calls, I reached through our bond, but you were pushing me out.”
Just thinking about what he was doing here while I was fighting for my life just to save the lives inside me made my hands tremble even more.
“I had no choice but to fight them alone. All five of them. I bled right after barely making it out alive.”
I paused, growling at him in anger I could no longer place. I hit his chest, unable to stop the tears blurring my vision.
“I kept calling you. I thought if my mate would come, then maybe it wouldn't be too late. But you never answered. I had to drag myself to a nearby healer away from our pack in fear that the rogues would see me again.”
I hit him again, harder this time. He didn't do anything to stop me and continued looking at me with guilt that was already too f*****g late.
“And what were you doing while I was busy crawling with nothing but hope to save our child?”
He slowly shook my head, “I didn't hear my phone... I-I wouldn't have blocked our bond if I had known-”
“You didn't know because you were busy f*****g that woman!"
Cyrus tried to reach for me and spout excuses. I raised my hand, stopping him before he could touch me.
"Don't insult me by lying. I'm not dumb... or maybe I am for trusting your words even if the truth is staring right back at me.”
"I made a mistake." Cyrus continued to explain, but his words only irritated me even more.
I laughed loudly and totally close to losing my mind.
“Shut the f**k up!" I yelled on top of my lungs, all the pain I endured came pouring out of me.
I pointed at him, “Don't you dare treat this as a mere mistake, Cyrus. You made a choice. You chose to ignore me every time she was near. You chose to break my trust by blatantly lying to me. You chose to f**k her all while I had to fight for my life.”
Tears freely flowed from my cheek.
"And while you were in another woman's arms, our child's life slowly slipped away. You did this, Cyrus. You killed my baby and I will never forgive you for it.”
Cyrus reached toward me, desperation filling his eyes.
"Malea, please..."
I stepped back. All the love and adoration I had for him disappeared and was replaced with nothing but anger and disgust.
I reached for the ceremonial bracelet he had gifted me during our mating ceremony and threw it on the floor, shattering with the impact.
"There is nothing left for us. Reject our bond.”
Cyrus stared at me in surprise before immediately shaking his head.
"No. I can't. I made a terrible mistake, Malea. I know that now. I'm ending it with Emily. I-I will even throw her out of the pack if that's what you want. Whatever happened... we'll get through it together."
I laughed at the audacity of his words. “You don't deserve anything, Cyrus.”
He didn't deserve to know that I was carrying twins and that the healer managed to save one of them.
If he knew the truth, he would never let me leave. He would demand the child remain in the pack and I will be forced to watch the child grow up under the same Alpha who had abandoned us when we needed him most.
Never.
“Break our bond.” I demanded again.
“I won't. Malea, I love you. I still love you. Don't do this to us.”
I pulled away when he grabbed my hand. “If you won't do it, I will.”
I marched out of the room, ignoring all the lingering pain I will gladly carry if it was the last remaining reminder of the child I lost.
Cyrus followed suit, still trying to reason out.
The pack members were already gathered outside, still concerned by what was happening.
My gaze swept through the crowd. They knew it too, about Cyrus and Emily. And yet, no one said a thing. We all turned a blind eye in the name of harmony.
I dropped on my knees.
"Dear Goddess, please hear my plea if you still see me as your own. I, Malea Kilton, reject Cyrus Elowen as my fated mate." I muttered in front of everyone.
Cyrus' eyes widened.
"Malea, stop! I'll spend the rest of my life making this right. Don't do this!”
He held my hand, but it was too late. The air suddenly grew heavy as silver light enveloped both of us, wrapping around our wrists like glowing chains connecting us.
“Your suffering has been witnessed.” A firm voice filled with disappointment echoed in my mind, “The sacred bond was broken not by you... but by the one who betrayed their vows."
I heard a faint sound of cracking in my mind. My eyes darted at our wrists connected by the light and it shattered into countless fragments after a second, breaking the bond connecting us for good.
Cyrus cried out, dropping to one knee as his wolf howled in unbearable agony.
My own wolf only whimpered quietly, still grieving at our greater lost.
Cyrus looked up at me with guilt and regret written all over his face.
He reached for me again.
"Please, don't leave. I'll fix this. I swear I'll fix everything."
I simply looked at him. It should have shattered me seeing him like this, but all I felt was emptiness.
“I will gather my things and leave right after.” I announced, moving on my own and refusing anyone's help.
I stepped out of the pack house right after without looking back. The pack members parted in silence as I walked through the territory one last time.
No one dared stop me, except Cyrus who was still calling after me. His voice echoed as I reached out of the pack territory.
My hand rested gently over my stomach and closed my eyes, listening to the very faint heartbeat that is the only thing that keeps me going now.
A tear rolled down my cheek as I made a silent promise.
From this moment forward, I was no longer the Luna of the River Edge Pack. I will live as a rogue and survive.
I will survive no matter what.
“I couldn't save your twin, but I'll save you. Even if I have to spend the rest of my life as a lone wolf.”
