TURNING A BLIND EYE
MALEA
The smell of blood still clung to my skin.
No matter how many times I wiped my hands on my dress and torn coat, I could still feel the sticky and warm feeling on my hands.
It felt like a constant reminder of everything I had just lost, and I can't even hate it because it was the only memory I have of my dear child.
That, and burying the remains of my child near the healer's hut, placing a marker stone above it.
“I'm truly sorry, dear. I did everything I could...but you lost one of your pups.”
The healer's words echoed in my mind again.
My trembling hand instinctively reached for my stomach. I could still feel everything despite my body trying to heal. The dull ache spread through my abdomen with every step I took.
The healer had begged me to stay the night, insisting I needed complete rest and just contact my pack to get me after.
But I couldn't, not if I wanted to protect the surviving baby.
I need to see Cyrus. I need to look my mate in the eyes when I ask him why he never came. Why he didn't come to my aid when I was both contacting him through phone calls and reaching to him through our mate bond he so conveniently blocked me from.
The pack territory soon came into view after what felt like endless walking.
I continued dragging myself inside. The guards straightened the moment they recognized me.
"Luna?!"
Their expressions shifted from respect to alarm as they noticed my appearance.
"You're bleeding...”
One of them hurried toward me.
"What happened? Please don't move anymore. We will call the pack healers."
I simply shook my head. "I've already seen a healer."
He looked ready to ask another question, but the emptiness on my face must have stopped him.
I continued walking without another word. I felt them following me, both wanting to help but were too baffled with how I was acting.
The familiar path welcomed me, but it no longer felt like home.
I used to think I was the luckiest she-wolf in the world, living like a fairytale our elders tell to pups about the mate bond.
I used to be...until that omega came into our lives.
Pack members greeted me out of habit before their smiles immediately disappeared. The conversations died one by one and they all followed me with their gaze.
"Why is the Luna covered in blood?"
"Was she attacked?"
Once again, I ignored everyone and kept heading to the pack house, standing at the very center of the territory.
Two years of marriage and waiting for the Goddess to bless us a child.
I often imagine myself raising our future children here. But now I could barely feel anything.
My vision blurred in tears, but I hastily wiped it off and bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted blood.
The omegas passing by to carry their duties stopped on their tracks after seeing me. One of them even dropped the folded clothes she was carrying.
The head maid gasped the instant she saw me.
"Luna Malea!"
She hurried over, horror filling her eyes.
"Good merciful Goddess, what happened to you?!" She asked, eyes landing on my dress that was stained with blood. “Wait, don't tell me...”
“I need to see Cyrus." I cut her off, eyes filled with nothing but determination.
Spite might be the only thing that keeps my knees from trembling and collapsing, and I needed to keep it till I saw him.
"The Alpha is..." She quickly hesitated and I already know why.
I knew, ever since the beginning. I turned a blind eye, chose to believe my mate's words and trusted our bond.
It was my first mistake. The second is trusting that he would still come.
I walked past everyone, following the bond I could barely feel as he was still actively blocking me out.
It didn't take long till I reached his office. Soft laughter drifted through the slightly open door, followed by a voice I knew better than my own.
"You didn't have to thank me, Emily.”
His tone was warm and affectionate, a tone I hadn't heard directed at me in months.
My fingers tightened into a fist. I hastily opened the door, not caring how loud I'd be. The door creaked and almost torn off its hinges.
They were both startled, clearly too focused with each other to notice my arrival.
Cyrus stood beside his desk. His shirt was partially unbuttoned, and standing far too close to him was the omega who changed our lives. Her hands were still resting on his chest, too comfortable for her own good.
She quickly backed away from Cyrus after realizing I was looking at where her hands rested.
I scoffed bitterly. No wonder he was blocking me out of our bond... and no wonder he never came for my aid.
My dear baby died because of it. It was unfair. So unfair.
Emily stepped farther from my husband.
"P-please excuse me."
She hurried toward the door, keeping her eyes lowered as she brushed past me. The sweet floral scent clinging to her mixed with Cyrus' scent also went past me.
Their scents had intertwined, not from standing close, or an innocent conversation Cyrus always insist was a simple check up whether the woman had adjusted to our pack.
Silence enveloped us after Emily left and that was the only time Cyrus looked at me.
"Malea..."
His gaze traveled over my bloodstained dress and his expression instantly changed.
"You're hurt."
He hurried toward me only to stop abruptly a few steps away.
I saw his nostrils flared, definitely catching scent he hadn't notice in months when he should have been the first one to notice aside from me.
His eyes widened, realizing the scent beneath the blood and the mixture of herbs the healer used on me earlier.
"You're pregnant?" He muttered.
His eyes suddenly gleamed, changing into his wolf's as he couldn't easily contain his instincts. His golden eyes locked onto mine, filled with shock and confusion.
I let out an empty laughter before looking at him dead in the eyes.
“I was pregnant.”
