Chapter 55 The Traveler THE BROOKLYN EAGLE ran the headline “Wedded” when two special ropes, connected into a loop, rose out of the water and traversed the river. This loop of rope was the starting point in laying the massive cables that would support the bridge. Engineers tested the movement of the rope, powered by a steam engine on the Brooklyn side, in a circular motion from end to end for several days. Anything attached to the moving loop would, in fact, travel across the river, hence the name assigned to the device: The Traveler.
