Stargazing
VENT APPRECIATED THE tremendous amount of planning, labor, and luck that would be necessary to build the biggest suspension bridge in the world, and remembered every detail of the simple demonstration his boss, Harold Reems, gave him months before with the upside-down glass inside the bowl. He imagined how the weight from the tremendous tower, which would rise from the top of the glass, would sink the caisson down to bedrock. Next, a solid, cement filling would be the final touch in providing a proper foundation for the tallest tower in North America. Vent thought about how Jimmy McGreary would beat his chest in celebration after being with his Irish girl, and he wanted to do the same thing at the top of the completed tower, but first he needed to be hired.
