Where’s Vent?
GEORGIA PACED BACK and forth, peeking through the front window each time she passed by. Vent, a creature of habit and routine, should have taken the five-thirty train and arrived home well before six; now, at seven, he was nowhere to be found. Georgia had noted his deteriorating condition with each day he worked in the caisson and worried something had happened to him at the job. She refused to sit around the house any longer.
After the second knock, Ezra opened the door. Georgia asked, “Either you or Moses seen Vent? He never came home from work.”
Ezra shook his head and shrugged his shoulder as he answered, “Not me, but Moses is out back. Let’s check with him.”
Georgia and Ezra found Moses settling his horse down for the night when they entered the barn.
