Kate held her daughter's hand and planted a soft kiss on it.
“I’m sorry, Mama is sorry. If I had been with you, you wouldn't have gotten sick, and you wouldn't have suffered like that,” she whispered.
She swallowed hard, tears slipping down her cheek.
“I know I was a bad mother, I was grieving over the loss of my baby…and I left you and your brother behind after I promised I would always protect you.”
“Mama? You're here,” Clara's eyes fluttered open, her voice faint.
“Yes, baby, I'm here,” Kate answered softly.
“Don't leave me, please,” Clara murmured weakly, wrapping her small hand around Kate's neck.
Kate's tears ran freely, she pulled her daughter closer, holding her tight to her chest.
