Chapter 2.
Sam
I awoke to the sound of my alarm going off. I looked around trying to gather my surroundings and then realized where I was, quickly shutting the alarm off so I didn’t wake up Charlie. He hates being woken up and I don’t want to be on the other end of that hate today. I rush to get ready, throwing on whatever I find first and run out of the house before Charlie wakes up. I left a half hour early to stop on the strip down the street from school to apply to some after school jobs. I do not want to be stuck in the house with Charlie every night or every weekend and I need to save money for college. It seems like almost everything is closed this early in the morning so my options are limited but I make my way into a dinner which seems to be busy with kids from school and older folks. I fill out my application and turn it in to a girl named Liv, who is in my English class. She seems friendly enough and tells me they’re desperate, hiring me on the spot.
“Um, not that I’m not grateful for the job but you’re my age, are you allowed to hire me like that?”
Amused, Liv laughs,
“It my parents dinner. They left me in charge of hiring since I would be training them anyways. So welcome aboard Sam, can you start today?”
“Yyes! Thank you that would be great.”
“Great. Let me just finish this up and we can walk to school together.”
I nod and smile. Day 2 seems to be off to a better start. Liv grabs her jacket and we turn to leave, noticing Ryan walking in with the group from his lunch table yesterday. Our eyes meet and I feel this electricity move through me. What is with me?! Get a grip. Hoping Liv didn’t see that, we make our way out of the dinner and walk to school.
Liv rambles on and on about the different cliques and the clubs the school has to offer but I can’t seem to focus on what she’s saying all I can think about is Ryan and why that felt so different from yesterday. Still talking, Liv invites me to a party tomorrow night and before I register what she said I said yes, catching my mistake.
“I mean.. I .. uhh.. Liv..”
“No too late Sam, you said you’re coming, can’t go back now.”
“I’ll try. I have to talk to my dad first”
I still didn’t tell Charlie I got an after school job, I’m really going to be pushing my luck asking to go to a party Friday night too. She starts talking again as we walk into English and I make sure to actually pay attention this time so I don’t end up agreeing to something else.
{Ryan}
I dreamt of her last night. Her long brown hair, hazel eyes, pink full lips. She’s beautiful without even trying. I wonder if she feels it too, the electric spark between us. It’s getting stronger, she has to feel it. Brody kicks me under the table at Pop’s Dinner, pulling me out of my thoughts.
“Owe, What dude?”
“What’s with you? Ever since that new chick came yesterday you’ve been spacey and staring at her. It’s creepy even for a wolf.”
I glare at him and look around to see Rachel looking at us.
“I’m just trying to find out her story. She said she moved back but I never knew she lived here to begin with. What’s with that?
It’s a small town everyone knows everyone, if she lived here before we should know her.”
“I’m not sure but let it go. Rachael wants you back, focus on that. Why did you guys break up again?”
“You know why. She’s clingy, controlling and a b***h. Not someone I want for my future Luna and neither should you.”
Rachael hears us and gets up storming away, throwing a tantrum in the process. Typical. We finish breakfast and head out, leaving enough money to cover the bill and a generous tip. Hoping in the jeep we all head to school, ready for the s**t show to continue.
I smell her all over school. It’s a fresh, intoxicating scent – spring rain and apples. It makes me want to track her down and take her home, marking her mine and telling everyone I found my Luna. Their Luna. But I can’t. She’s human and that makes this complicated. She has to develop feelings for me on her own before I can drop this on her and show her who I really am. Until then I’ll just have to keep an eye on her and make sure she is safe.
4th period comes and I rush to class getting there the same time as Sam. I smile and try to say hi but she rushes past me trying to avoid me like yesterday. Not this time. I follow closely behind her and sit next to her again but this time I get close, smelling that fresh scent, “Hi beautiful. How is your day so far?”
“Uh, I..um..f.fine. Thanks. How about you?”
I love how nervous she gets being put on the spot. I’m not sure if it’s because I make her nervous or if’s just how she is naturally but I plan on finding out.
“Do I make you nervous?”
Staring at me wide eyed she says,
“Um, no. Wwhy?”
I laugh, “Just wondering. Do you have plans today after school?”
She scrunches her face up as if thrown off by the question or thinking hard about something.
“Yes. I’m working after school.”
Working? She just moved here. She’s working already? Where? Why? I look at her, trying to read her but can’t. She’s a tough one for sure. Just as I’m about to say something else, the teacher walks in and Sam’s attention turns to the board, ending my chance to ask her anything else.
Class ends and she packs up slower this time, giving me a chance to talk to her. I grab my things and start to ask her to sit with me at lunch when Rachael comes strolling in class, linking her arm in mine and pulling me to the cafeteria, wanting to talk about “us”. I look back at Sam who looks hurt and I instantly get pissed off, pulling my arm away from Rachael.
“Rachael, Stop. We broke up. We aren’t getting back together. I’m not your mate and I’m not choosing you as my Luna. Get
over it.”
I storm away pissed off and needing to calm down before I try to find Sam and explain things.
