Sleep immediately disappeared from her eyes as her mind and brain became sharp, wide open, and awake. Before she could register what was going on, she felt her body leaving the bed, and in no time she was tossed out of the room like a piece of trash.
She fell hard on the hallway, her back hitting the cold marble floor, and she could hear some cracks of her bones.
"Oww...."
Before she could stand up, Iris came falling on top of her as loud laughter from above followed.
"I'm so sorry!" Iris apologized quickly.
"Get your low ass up and join the line now!" Someone barked, and Lyra looked ahead of her only to see others also getting thrown out of their rooms.
So it wasn't just them alone; they're treating low ranks like trash.
She got up and helped Iris up before joining the straight line. The freshers test—it was time. The more they walked, the more others kept falling beside them; they were also being thrown out of their rooms.
Lyra helped some of them up, and Iris also joined her too, as they all joined the line. Their assailants are seniors, both male and female, but they seem to have some similarity in their looks. Lyra identifies them quickly as warrior trainees. Soldiers in training of the supernatural world. They're trained to show no mercy.
The warriors trainees herded them out of their dorms to a gigantic open field. There were three lecturers, two male and one female, standing on the stage with eyes on them.
She looked around and saw students gathered around. They were here to watch the freshers test, which is more like entertainment to them.
The lowest-ranked freshers were the first to reach the field, so they were asked to wait for others, and Lyra spotted them coming. They all looked terrified, with others having nonchalant looks, but there was one thing she noticed: the warriors trainees also treated them badly.
Which meant they're not just the ones who were knocked out of their rooms; these middle- and higher-ranked students also faced the same thing.
"Fascinating!" She said under her breath, a slow smile of satisfaction creeping to her face.
"We are all gathered around for the fresher test, so please listen to your assailants as they guide you all" The lady on stage started, and everyone started clapping except Lyra, as usual, because she doesn't understand the need for clapping.
"Low ranks here, middle rank here, high ranks here...." One of the male warrior trainees said, and they all formed different lines according to him.
"Lowborns here..." He added, and Lyra bit her lip inwardly.
What's the need of separating her from low ranks? It's just her, by the way. Iris immediately held her hand and squeezed it lightly before giving her a reassuring smile.
She nods at her and takes a step forward only to see two others reaching the line before her. One male and one female. So it's not just her that's lowborn; then why is she being tainted badly? She joined the line, and for some reason they both ignored her, not even batting an eye.
She shook her head, not giving a damn about them, and she immediately started feeling restless out of the blue as she felt her wolf's presence.
"The first test is called 'The Powerful Mirror'; this is unique. Once you stand in front of it, it shows your supernatural sides, for werewolves, your wolf spirit radiates behind you, while for vampires, your shadow becomes bigger. For other species, your spirit radiates behind you either in shadows or in forms..." The lady on stage explained, and Lyra heart beat wildly.
What was she thinking of coming here? What if her wolf radiates behind her and then they find out she's not a low born?
Oh God!! What will she do now?
While she was contemplating the tests already begun. The highest rank started first, and they were students clapping with them being scored accordingly.
She forced her eyes up, and one of the middle rank freshers stood in front of the mirror, and his shadows grew so tall and mighty behind him that even Lyra found herself releasing a gasp.
"Great, you deserve to be in the high rank; you get an A" The lecturer said, and they all clapped as he walked down eyes meeting with Lyra, and there was a smirk on his face.
Shit!! It's one of those bullies from earlier. So they were freshmen as well?
"Jeremy!" Someone shouted.
She immediately looked away, and the tests continued; soon it reached the low ranks turns.
"Get off stage!" They all started laughing at them...the low ranks.
It died down the moment it was her turn. She stepped forward slowly, her hands fidgeting on the hem of her blouse. The crowd paused, staring at her, and she stood in front of the mirror with her eyes closed.
A dark, blurry figure appeared big and tall behind her, and everyone jaw dropped, but it disappeared as quickly as it came, making everyone wonder if they saw it correctly, leaving only her reflection in the mirror.
"Lowborn has nothing to show but just her reflection!" Someone pointed at her, laughing loudly, and Lyra opened her eyes only to stare back at herself.
Strange, is it because her wolf is wreck currently or because her wolf is more like sick?
This was what she could think of as she slowly walked down the stage, ignoring their petty laughter.
"Lina Volkov, you get a D" The lecturer said after her, and she scoffed.
"You can eat it!" She said.
"Time for the second round, this is called the spirit test flame. You place your hands above the flame on the bowl, and depending on your strength it will light up higher than it was" they explained, and it started off.
Someone from the high rank went forward and placed his hands over the flame, and it burned up harder as the students cheered louder for him.
"Alpha Darius!" A girl shouted from the crowd, and he blinked at her before stepping down, eyes linking with Lyra, then he muttered, "Loser!"
Lyra fisted her bump, glaring daggers at him, it was one of the bullies. She has been targeted ever since, once they win, they all look at her with mockery in their eyes.
She isn't a lowborn and she can't ever be a lowborn. Her wolf is just wreck currently, that's why, and she wouldn't force things, she's even grateful that it made her look like a real lowborn; else things would have escalated.
"Lina Volkov?" She heard her name loudly as hearty laughter filled the air.
"Is there a need for her to do the test? She's a pathetic lowborn" someone questioned, and it was one of the werewolves among those bullies. She stared at him blankly, not saying a word..
"Yes Alpha Marcus, all freshers must participate," one of the male lecturers, who looked calm and reserved, answered.
Marcus only turned and stared at her, and mockery was vivid on his face.
"Disgraceful!"
"A beauty but a lowborn!"
"Aww, does she wants to cry?"
The students laughed until their hearts were content, and Lyra walked to the stage with her head high.
She stared at the burning flame on the bowl. She's not a lowborn, and something in her wants to prove them wrong.
Lighting this flame up wouldn't cost her fake identity, right? So there's no harm in winning anyway.
The crowd went silent, all eyes fixed on her as usual, and she slowly lifted her palms and placed them over the flame.
It gleamed, and the flame escalated, covering the bowl immediately, so the crowd held their breaths, but as quickly as it came, it died down with smoke coming out from the bowl.
"She just quenched the flame!!!" Someone shouted, and the laughter started off again.
Lyra stood there confused. She had an excuse to give for the first one, but for this, she has nothing to say.
She had quenched the flame instead of raising it up. How is that possible?"So pathetic, you get a D again!" The other male lecturer scowled at her, and she opened her mouth to say something, but the crowd's mockery was too much.
She wanted to seek for another chance because she thought something might be wrong somewhere.
"Get down now!" He commanded, and she turned around, dragging her legs down the stage.
"The low ranks are full of losers!" These students were good at laughing because everyone seemed so happy to watch them fail.
Lyra stared at the sun that was about to perk up, and she heard them announce the end of the test.
She turned around to walk away but then stopped and turned sideways as her eyes locked with one of the male warrior trainees that stared at her cold and deadly with a deep scowl visible on his face.
This time around she felt her wolf on the surface, and then she heard what she wasn't expecting to hear…."Mate!"
She held her chest, stumbling backwards, because she could feel the pain her wolf was carrying, and it's the strength she used in addressing their mate. She fell on her knees in pain, her chest hitting her badly.
Mate?
He is my mate?
"Mate!!"
She held her chest tightly, feeling severe pain. She just found her mate, but something in her tells her that she’s about to receive a rejection regarding her being a rumored lowborn.
