The Reluctant Trip to The Market
Aliya stood before her mother, Jummai, her arms crossed and a scowl etched on her face. The scent of freshly baked bread wafted through the air, mingling with the sound of chirping birds outside. "Mama, do I have to go to the market?" Aliya asked, her voice tinged with frustration. "Can't Abdul go instead?" Jummai's expression turned stern, her eyes narrowing. "No, Aliya. You're the one who needs to go. Abdul has his studies to attend to." Aliya's eyes rolled in exasperation. She loathed going to the market – the cacophony of sounds, the chaotic crowds, and the endless haggling. But most of all, she resented being treated like a servant, forced to run errands for her family. "But Mama, I don't want to go," Aliya protested, her voice rising. "I have my studies to attend to as well." Jummai's face darkened, and she raised her hand, pointing a shaking finger at Aliya. "You ungrateful child! You'll do as you're told! You'll go to the market and buy the ingredients for dinner." Aliya felt a stinging sensation in her eyes as her mother's words cut deep. She knew she was being unfair, but she couldn't help the way she felt. As she turned to leave, Jummai's voice stopped her. "And don't think that you'll be here for much longer, Aliya. Alhaji Ilu has shown interest in marrying you, and your father and I have agreed." Aliya's heart sank, and she felt a wave of panic wash over her. She was only 13 years old, and the thought of being married off to some old, illiterate trader was terrifying. "Mama, please," Aliya begged, turning back to face her mother. "Don't make me marry him. I want to go to school, I want to be a teacher." Jummai's expression turned cold, and she spat on the ground. "You're a foolish girl, Aliya. You'll do as you're told, or you'll suffer the consequences." Aliya felt a lump form in her throat as she turned and walked away, the sound of her mother's curses and insults echoing in her ears. As she walked to the market, Aliya felt a sense of desperation wash over her. She knew she had to escape, had to find a way out of this village and the life that had been planned for her. Just as she was starting to feel overwhelmed, Aliya heard a voice calling out to her. "Aliya! Aliya, wait for me!" Aliya's eyes rolled in exasperation as she turned to see Saleh, the village head's son, jogging towards her. Saleh was a year older than Aliya, but his immaturity and arrogance made him seem much younger. Saleh was known for being a bully and a troublemaker, and Aliya had had the misfortune of crossing paths with him on several occasions. She had always managed to stay one step ahead of him, but she knew that he was not someone to be underestimated. "Saleh, what do you want?" Aliya asked curtly, her tone a clear warning to leave her alone. Saleh chuckled, his eyes glinting with amusement. "Oh, I just wanted to keep you company, Aliya. You know, make sure you're safe in the market." Aliya snorted, her patience wearing thin. "I don't need your protection, Saleh. And even if I did, I wouldn't want it from someone like you." Saleh's grin faltered, his face darkening with anger. "Someone like me?" he repeated, his voice rising. "What's that supposed to mean?" Aliya stood her ground, her eyes flashing with defiance. "It means someone who's lazy, arrogant, and thinks they're above the law just because of their father's position." Saleh's face turned red with rage, and for a moment, Aliya thought he might actually hit her. But then, his expression changed, and he sneered at her instead. "You're just jealous, Aliya," he spat. "Jealous of my family's wealth and status. You're just a poor village girl who'll never amount to anything." Aliya felt a stinging sensation in her eyes, but she refused to cry. Instead, she stood tall, her voice steady. "I may not have your family's wealth, Saleh," she said, "but I have something you'll never have – brains, courage, and determination. And with those qualities, I'll achieve my dreams, no matter what you or anyone else says." Saleh's face turned purple with rage, but Aliya just turned and walked away, leaving him to seethe in anger. She felt a sense of satisfaction at having stood up to him, but she knew that this wasn't the end of their confrontation. As she walked to the market, Aliya felt a sense of desperation wash over her. She knew that she had to escape, had to find a way out of this village and the life that had been planned for her. She thought about her dreams of becoming a teacher, of making a difference in the world. She knew that she couldn't give up, no matter how difficult things seemed. Aliya took a deep breath and focused on the task at hand. She had to get to the market and buy the ingredients for dinner. She walked quickly, her eyes scanning the crowded stalls. She knew that she had to be careful, that she couldn't let her emotions get the better of her. As she shopped, Aliya couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched. She kept looking over her shoulder, expecting to see Saleh or one of his friends lurking in the shadows. But every time, there was no one there. Finally, Aliya finished her shopping and headed home. She felt a sense of relief wash over her as she walked through the door. She was safe, at least for the moment. But as she looked at her mother, who was busy cooking dinner, Aliya felt a pang of sadness. She knew that she couldn't stay in this village, not with the life that had been planned for her. She knew that she had to escape, no matter what it took.
