ROMAN
"Are you okay?” I asked her.
She stared at me for a moment and then nodded slowly. I wasn't convinced but then I turned my attention back to the other woman with the terribly smelling cologne.
“Who do you think you are?" She asked, her brows furrowed.
“I think it's best if you run off and play dress up or something." I suggested, kindly. “You don't want to make me angry."
The maids she commanded dispersed immediately leaving her to wonder what was happening. I dismissed her completely and turned my attention back to the girl on the floor. Her blue eyes reminded me of a storm and at the same time a calm ocean.
I helped her up on her feet as the other woman walked out complaining to herself as she left.
“Why?" She managed to say in a low voice. “Why did you help me?"
“You seem like you needed it."
Defiance flashed in her eyes as she said, “Thanks but I had it under control. You misjudged the entire situation, mister."
“Oh," I raised a brow at her. “Did you, now? Cause from where I'm standing you were having your ass handed to you."
The defiance grew like a bonfire and morphed into rebellion. “Nobody asked you to play the knight in shining armor."
I grinned. “I think it's safe to say I'm more than a mere knight in shining armor."
"Cocky—”
She stopped what she was about to say at the sound of footsteps rounding the hallway. I could hear the annoying woman ranting as they got closer.
The Alpha's heir marched confidently while she followed behind urging him on to his demise. He slowed down and his confident walk devolved into a monk-like stroll as he reached us.
“That's the bastard I was telling you about." The woman squealed, pointing a long finger at me.
I could have ended her life with just a single move for her impunity but I considered the suit I was wearing. I would hate to ruin it.
The Alpha's heir did two things that saved her life. He slapped her hard enough to send her body flying across the room and then he bowed immediately showing respect.
“Forgive my mate for her stupidity." His voice shook when he spoke. “She is nothing but a speck of dust unworthy of your fury, my Lord."
I turned to the woman who was nursing her bruised face and too stunned to utter another word.
“It's fine, Gusto." I said. “I wouldn't want to stain this suit. I've taken a liking to the fine fabric. I trust you would do well to put her in her place."
"Leave it to me.” He said with his face to the floor.
I turned to the woman by my side who was now trying to figure out why the Alpha's heir regarded me with such fear and respect. I noticed a nasty cut at the side of her face.
“We have to get this checked." I said, flicking my thumb across her soft skin. “Can you walk?"
Without waiting for an answer I swept her into my arms, a move that made her gasp in disbelief. She quickly wrapped her arms around my neck and I felt the full blast of her tenderness.
“You shouldn't bother with her." The Alpha's heir suggested. “She's—insignificant.”
"Why is that, Gusto? Because you rejected her?” She flinched at my mention of the rejection that had the highlight of the week. "Because from where I'm standing I'm certain you traded a diamond for a—” I turned to look at the red faced woman on the floor. "Whatever that is.”
Immediately I rounded the corner, she started protesting. "Put me down immediately.” She demanded. "I can walk just fine.”
I considered this for a moment but shook my head in response. I was enjoying having her so close and her defiance only made it more enjoyable. Ignoring her, I took her to the medical center and dropped her on a bed. The nurse promised she would be attended to immediately when she realized who I was.
Leaving the medical center I couldn't stop thinking about her. There was something peculiar about her and I tried to place a finger on it but it evaded me. Was it her blue eyes and the gentle teasing smile that touched the corner of her mouth or was it something simple like the tender feel of her flesh? Whatever it was kept my mind busy for most part of the afternoon.
My mind was so preoccupied with thoughts of her that I didn't notice when one of the guards entered to tell me everything was ready for the return trip back to my pack. Since arriving here, I'd waited to hear those words but now that I did I felt like there was something missing. It didn't take long for me to realize what was wrong.
“Get everything set to leave within the hour." I got up slowly. “There's one little detail I have to see through."
I left the chambers and walked straight to the royal quarters of the Alpha. Herman wasn't expecting to see me and I caught the old fool off guard snoozing on his throne like the slob he was. He straightened and greeted me with a drool on his pudgy face. He looked like a fat kid playing dress up rather than what he was; an Alpha to one of the wealthiest packs.
He was a joke of a man and he knew it; I knew it and he knew I knew it. I cut straight to the business at hand and demanded he let me take the rejected she-wolf back with me to my pack seeing as she was worthless to any male in the pack. He didn't think twice about it nor did he hesitate.
“You can take her with you. I don't see any reason to keep her here." He waved fingers that looked like cucumbers.
I left his chamber and ordered a guard to escort her (I still don't know her name yet) to my chambers and another guard to get her belongings.
Just as I was about to change into something simple, the door opened and she stepped in cautiously. She stopped halfway seeing me shirtless and considered going back but I stopped her.
“Wait!" I bawled. “You don't have to leave."
“I don't enjoy seeing half naked men." She said trying too hard to avoid eye contact. “But now that I'm here I'd like to know who you are and why I'm being told I am to leave with you."
The spark of defiance in her eyes and the way her nose flared when she tried to make a point amused me.
I could tell she was uncomfortable being in the same room with me, a half naked man as she had put it and I teased her by walking slowly towards her. She moved away keeping the distance between us like magnets.
“Wh, what do you think you're doing?" She asked, her voice unsteady.
Her eyes darted frantically and she looked like a caged animal. She ran out of room as I cornered her to a wall. Her eyes begged me to stop but I refused to listen.
“Stop, please." She gasped, breathless.
I watched her for a moment and then stopped. She took a deep breath to steady her frayed nerves and then said, “You still haven't answered my question. Who are you?"
I grinned as I said, “I'm Roman Evermore, Alpha of the Jade pack and you're my responsibility from now on.”
