The Devil in Black
Rain poured from the night sky like a curtain of silver, drenching the city in darkness. Elena Moretti pulled her coat tighter around herself as she hurried down the crowded sidewalk. The cold wind bit at her skin, but she barely noticed it. Her mind was elsewhere. The hospital bill folded inside her purse felt heavier than it should. Five thousand dollars. Five thousand dollars she didn't have. Her mother's treatment couldn't wait. The doctors had made that painfully clear. Elena released a shaky breath. "One problem at a time," she whispered. She had just finished a double shift at the Grand Imperial Hotel, one of the most luxurious establishments in the city. Wealthy businessmen, celebrities, and politicians regularly walked through its golden doors. People like them lived in a completely different world. A world Elena would never belong to. The sound of screeching tires suddenly echoed through the street. She looked up. A black SUV sped around the corner. Then another. And another. Something was wrong. Very wrong. People began moving aside. A strange tension spread through the street. The vehicles stopped in front of a high-end restaurant across the road. Doors opened. Men dressed in black suits stepped out. Their movements were precise. Disciplined. Dangerous. Even from a distance, Elena could feel it. These weren't ordinary businessmen. The crowd instinctively backed away. Then he appeared. The man in the center. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit. His dark hair glistened beneath the rain. His expression was unreadable. Cold. Powerful. As if the entire world belonged to him. The men around him immediately lowered their heads in respect. Fear flashed across several faces nearby. Elena frowned. Who was he? For a brief moment, the stranger lifted his gaze. Their eyes met. Time seemed to stop. Something strange passed between them. Only for a second. Then someone bumped into Elena. She looked away. When she glanced back, the mysterious man was already entering the restaurant. Gone. Elena shook her head. "Forget it." She had bigger problems. Far bigger. Little did she know that meeting him would change her life forever. --- Inside the restaurant, Alessandro De Luca sat at the head of a private dining room. The atmosphere was tense. Several men occupied the table. Nobody spoke. Nobody dared. Alessandro's fingers tapped lightly against the polished wood. The only sound in the room. Across from him sat his father. Marco De Luca. The most feared crime boss in the city. "We have a problem," Marco finally said. Alessandro's expression remained unchanged. "What kind?" "A serious one." Marco slid a folder across the table. Alessandro opened it. His eyes narrowed. The photograph inside showed several armed men. Members of the Russo family. Their greatest rivals. "They attacked one of our shipments," Marco continued. "They're getting bold." A dangerous silence followed. One of the older men cleared his throat. "We should strike first." Another nodded. "Send a message." Alessandro closed the folder. His voice remained calm. "No." The room froze. Everyone stared at him. Marco's gaze sharpened. "No?" "If we retaliate immediately, they win." Several men exchanged confused looks. Alessandro leaned back in his chair. "They want us angry." "They want us reckless." A faint smile appeared on his face. "So we'll make them nervous instead." Marco studied his son. Then slowly nodded. The room relaxed. The decision had been made. As always. Alessandro rarely spoke. But when he did, people listened. Because he was almost always right. Yet tonight, despite the serious discussion, his thoughts drifted elsewhere. To the woman standing in the rain. The woman who had looked at him without fear. Most people looked away. She hadn't. Strange. Very strange. --- Three days later. Elena's morning began with disaster. The hotel manager stormed into the lobby. His face was pale. Panicked. "Everyone move!" Staff immediately rushed into position. "What happened?" Elena asked. "A VIP guest." She rolled her eyes. That explained everything. The wealthy loved being treated like royalty. The front doors opened. Security guards entered first. Then came several men in black suits. Elena felt her stomach drop. No. It couldn't be. The same man from the restaurant. The same cold eyes. The same powerful presence. The same black suit. He walked through the lobby like he owned the building. Everyone stepped aside. Even the manager. "Mr. De Luca," he said nervously. "We're honored to have you." Alessandro barely acknowledged him. His attention had already landed elsewhere. On Elena. Again. Their eyes met. For a second time. This time neither looked away. A strange feeling settled in Elena's chest. Annoyance. Curiosity. Maybe both. The manager suddenly grabbed her arm. "You." "What?" "Take Mr. De Luca to the penthouse suite." "What?" The manager forced a smile. "Now." Elena wanted to refuse. But she needed her job. Desperately. So she led the way. The elevator ride felt endless. Silence filled the space. Elena stared at the numbers above the door. Anything to avoid looking at him. "You work too much." Her head snapped toward him. "What?" His gaze remained forward. "You look exhausted." She blinked. What kind of observation was that? "You don't even know me." "No." The corner of his mouth lifted slightly. "But I know tired when I see it." Elena crossed her arms. "And I know arrogance when I see it." The elevator stopped. Silence. For the first time, genuine amusement appeared in Alessandro's eyes. Most people were terrified of him. This woman challenged him. Interesting. Very interesting. --- That evening, Elena finally finished work. She was exhausted. All she wanted was sleep. As she walked toward the bus stop, she noticed something unusual. The street was empty. Too empty. A bad feeling settled in her stomach. Footsteps echoed behind her. She turned. Three men. Strangers. Watching her. One smiled. It wasn't friendly. Fear crawled up her spine. She increased her pace. The footsteps followed. Faster. Closer. Her heart hammered. Something was wrong. Very wrong. Suddenly one of the men grabbed her arm. Elena gasped. "Let go!" The man laughed. "No need to be scared." She tried pulling away. His grip tightened. Pain shot through her wrist. Then a deep voice cut through the darkness. "Release her." Everything stopped. The men turned. Elena's breath caught. Standing beneath the streetlight was Alessandro De Luca. Dressed entirely in black. His expression emotionless. Deadly. The atmosphere changed instantly. The three men recognized him. Fear appeared on their faces. Real fear. One of them swallowed hard. "Mr. De Luca..." Alessandro took a single step forward. The air seemed to grow colder. "I won't repeat myself." The man's grip immediately vanished. The strangers backed away. Fast. Within seconds they disappeared into the night. Leaving Elena speechless. Alessandro approached. "You shouldn't walk alone." Elena stared at him. "How did you know I was here?" For the first time, Alessandro hesitated. Then he answered honestly. "I saw them following you." She wasn't entirely convinced. But before she could ask another question, a black SUV pulled up beside them. Several suited men stepped out. One approached Alessandro urgently. "Boss." The single word froze Elena. Boss? The man handed Alessandro a phone. His expression darkened immediately. "What happened?" he asked. A pause. Then: "The Russo family attacked." The name meant nothing to Elena. But Alessandro's reaction did. Something dangerous was happening. Something serious. He looked at her one final time. His eyes lingered longer than they should have. "Go home, Elena." The way he said her name sent an unexpected shiver through her. Then he entered the SUV. The vehicle disappeared into the night. Leaving Elena standing alone beneath the rain. Confused. Curious. And completely unaware that she had just stepped into a world filled with secrets, violence, and betrayal. A world ruled by Alessandro De Luca. And a world that would soon destroy everything she thought she knew. To be continued....
