A Familiar Stranger

1057 Words
Three days had passed since the beginning of classes. In that short time, one name had spread across every corner of the Royal Alpha University. Ariana Tidewell. The mysterious girl from the Ocean Tide Pack who had solved an ancient magical formation that even professors had failed to restore. Students talked about her in classrooms. They talked about her in the library. They talked about her in the training grounds. Some admired her brilliance. Some envied the attention she received. Others were determined to surpass her. Astera, however, remained completely indifferent. She attended her classes, quietly took notes, disappeared into the library whenever she had free time, and returned to her dormitory before sunset. She never tried to attract attention. Ironically... That only made people more curious. --- At the academy café... Groups of students filled the outdoor tables overlooking the crystal lake. Flint Earthclaw sat beneath a large willow tree, reading one of the books Professor Orion had recommended. Zephyr Skye arrived carrying two trays of food. "I swear," Zephyr sighed dramatically, "half the academy isn't talking about the entrance trials anymore." Flint looked up. "They're talking about Ariana." "Exactly." Zephyr placed a cup in front of Flint. "Have you noticed?" "She doesn't even realize she's famous." Flint smiled. "Or perhaps..." "She simply doesn't care." Zephyr laughed. "I've never met anyone who ignores attention so completely." --- Across the courtyard... Draven Ashfire walked alone. As always. Students instinctively stepped aside to clear his path. No one dared stop him. No one dared disturb him. His reputation had always spoken before he did. As he crossed the academy square... He overheard several students talking. "...Professor Orion asked her to assist in advanced classes." "...She solved a thousand-year-old formation." "...Dean Aurelius personally congratulated her." Draven slowed his steps. Ariana Tidewell. Again. Why did everyone keep mentioning her? More importantly... Why did hearing her name make him pause? --- Later that afternoon... The Advanced Royal Program gathered for Ancient History. Astera arrived early as usual. She chose a seat near the window. Sunlight filtered through the crystal glass, illuminating the pages of the ancient manuscript she was reading. She didn't notice Draven entering. He paused for the briefest moment. She looked... Peaceful. Completely absorbed in her book. Nothing like the ambitious students constantly trying to impress the professors. Without realizing it... His eyes remained on her a little longer than necessary. --- "You're staring." Flint's calm voice broke his thoughts. Draven looked away immediately. "I wasn't." Flint smiled knowingly. "Of course." Zephyr, who had arrived just in time to hear the conversation, nearly grinned. "Oh?" "Our Future Alpha is interested in someone?" Draven answered without changing his expression. "No." Zephyr leaned closer. "Then why have you looked at Ariana three times in the last minute?" "I haven't." "You just did again." Flint quietly sipped his tea, pretending not to listen. Draven finally sighed. "I've simply noticed..." He paused. "...something unusual." Zephyr raised an eyebrow. "Such as?" Draven looked toward Astera once more. "I cannot sense her." --- Flint frowned. "What do you mean?" "My wolf." "It senses every wolf around me." "It always has." "But whenever Ariana is nearby..." "There is nothing." "No aura." "No elemental signature." "No instinct." Zephyr stopped smiling. "That's impossible." Draven nodded. "I know." "And yet..." "I still feel..." He searched for the right word. "...familiarity." The word surprised even him. Flint folded his arms thoughtfully. "So your instincts recognize her..." "...but your wolf doesn't." Draven gave a slight nod. "I don't understand it." None of them did. --- The professor entered, and the conversation ended. Throughout the lecture, however... Draven found himself unconsciously observing Astera. Not continuously. Just... occasionally. She listened with complete concentration. She filled pages with precise notes. Whenever the professor mentioned ancient civilizations, magical engineering, or forgotten runes, her eyes seemed to come alive. She asked questions no one else considered. Questions that made even the professor pause. Draven had seen countless talented students. But Ariana wasn't trying to prove she was intelligent. She simply wanted to understand. That difference intrigued him. --- After class... Professor Orion stopped Astera before she could leave. "Miss Tidewell." "I've finished examining the corrections you made to the ancient formation." Astera looked slightly nervous. "Were they wrong?" The professor laughed. "Quite the opposite." "I've submitted your revised design to the Academy Research Council." She blinked. "My design?" "Yes." "If approved..." "It will replace the version that has been taught for the last three hundred years." Students walking past overheard the conversation. Within moments... The whispers started again. "Three hundred years?" "She's changing academy textbooks?" "Who exactly is she?" Even Draven stopped walking. For the first time... He felt genuine surprise. Changing an academy formation wasn't merely an achievement. It was history. --- That evening... Draven stood alone on one of the academy's highest balconies overlooking the campus. The wind carried the scent of rain. His wolf remained unusually restless. He closed his eyes. "What is it?" Normally, his wolf answered through instinct. Tonight... Only silence. Then... Far below... He caught sight of Ariana walking through the academy gardens. She carried several books in her arms. The setting sun illuminated her blue hair. She paused beside an ancient fountain, seemingly studying the runes carved around its edge before continuing toward the library. Completely unaware... Someone was watching. Draven frowned. The strange feeling returned. Not attraction. Not curiosity alone. Recognition. As though some forgotten memory lay just beyond his reach. He had never spoken more than a few words to her. Yet every time she appeared... Something inside him became unsettled. He disliked mysteries. Especially ones involving his own instincts. Opening his eyes, he made a quiet decision. "I'll observe her." "Nothing more." He needed answers. Who was Ariana Tidewell? Why couldn't his wolf sense her? Why did she seem so familiar? And why... Did he feel that meeting her had somehow changed the course of his life? Far below, Astera disappeared into the Grand Library, completely unaware that the Future Alpha of the Inferno Pack had begun paying close attention to her. The distance between them remained vast. One carried the burden of betrayal. The other carried the weight of a decision he could never explain. Neither knew that destiny had already begun pulling them back toward one another—one silent glance at a time.
