Alliances

The first rays of dawn filtered through the towering trees of the Moon Forest. A pale silver mist drifted across the ground, curling around ancient roots and moss-covered stones. The forest that had echoed with fierce battles throughout the previous day had fallen strangely quiet. It wasn't peaceful. It was waiting. Astera opened her eyes the moment the tiny dragon nudged her cheek with its nose. She smiled faintly. "Good morning to you too." The little creature chirped happily before jumping onto a nearby branch. Astera stretched her sore muscles. She had spent the night hidden inside the hollow trunk of an ancient moon tree after disguising its entrance with one of her camouflage devices. No one had found her. Exactly as planned. She removed her notebook from her backpack. Moon Tokens: Two. Remaining inventions: Twelve traps, three smoke capsules, two grappling cables, one mana sensor. She frowned. "My supplies are disappearing faster than expected." The dragon tilted its head. "I'll have to improvise." After eating dried fruit and bread from her travel pouch, she handed the dragon a few roasted meat strips she had packed before entering the trial. The tiny creature happily devoured them. Astera chuckled. "You eat more than I do." The dragon ignored the comment completely. --- Elsewhere... Dozens of students had already formed temporary alliances. The trial had proven one thing. Surviving alone was difficult. Winning alone seemed impossible. Near the Crystal River, nearly twenty first-year students stood together. "We should stay as one group." "It'll be safer." Another student nodded. "If a senior attacks, we can fight together." Everyone agreed. Strength in numbers. It seemed like the smartest choice. --- Far deeper inside the forest... Draven Ashfire calmly walked between enormous trees. Three Fire Pack students followed several steps behind him. None of them spoke. Draven rarely needed words. His presence alone inspired confidence. One of the students finally broke the silence. "My Prince..." "Should we continue hunting individually?" Draven looked ahead. "No." "The second day is always different." "The forest changes." "The professors expect us to adapt." He suddenly stopped. Someone stood ahead. A tall young man with brown hair leaned casually against a boulder. His calm amber eyes met Draven's. Flint Earthclaw. The heir of the Earth Pack. Flint smiled. "I was wondering when we'd meet." Draven nodded politely. "Flint." Neither transformed. Neither reached for their weapons. They respected each other too much for an unnecessary fight. Flint folded his arms. "Temporary truce?" Draven looked toward the dense forest. "Until the beasts appear." Flint raised an eyebrow. "You noticed too?" "The forest has become too quiet." The two future Alphas shared the same thought. Something was coming. "Fine," Draven replied. "We cooperate until the danger passes." Flint extended his hand. "Agreed." They shook hands. Their followers looked surprised. The strongest heirs of two rival packs... Working together. At least for now. --- Meanwhile... Laughter echoed somewhere high above the trees. A group of students cautiously looked upward. "Did you hear that?" Before anyone could answer... A powerful gust of wind scattered leaves everywhere. Five students instinctively covered their faces. When the wind disappeared... Their Moon Tokens were gone. A cheerful voice echoed overhead. "Thank you!" Everyone looked up. Zephyr Stormwind stood balanced effortlessly on a tree branch, twirling five glowing Moon Tokens around one finger. He grinned. "You really should pay more attention." One furious student shouted, "Give those back!" Zephyr laughed. "That's not how competitions work!" With another burst of wind... He vanished. Only laughter remained. Hidden behind another tree, Zephyr counted the tokens. "Eight." "Not bad." His wolf purred proudly inside him. "This is fun." --- On the opposite side of the forest... Water flowed gracefully around a group of nearly fifteen students. At their center stood Nerina. Elegant. Confident. Completely in control. She surveyed her teammates. "We move together." "No unnecessary risks." "If anyone attacks..." "We respond immediately." An Ocean Pack student smiled. "No one will challenge a group this strong." Nerina nodded confidently. "They'd be fools if they tried." --- Back inside the Observation Hall... Professor Orion watched the crystal screens carefully. "As expected." "The students have begun forming alliances." Master Kael nodded. "It increases their chances of survival." Professor Selene looked toward another screen. "Except one." The image showed Astera quietly walking alone through the forest. Dean Aurelius smiled faintly. "Miss Arina Tidewell." "Still refuses to join anyone." --- Astera had barely walked another kilometer when three students stepped into her path. They wore Ocean Pack uniforms. One smiled politely. "Excuse me..." "You're Arina Tidewell, right?" Astera nodded cautiously. "What is it?" The young man smiled. "We heard you defeated a third-year." Another added, "We're forming a team." "You should join us." Astera remained silent. The third student spoke hopefully. "We'd have a much better chance together." For a moment... Astera considered it. A team meant protection. Extra eyes. Shared resources. But it also meant... Responsibility. Trust. And secrets. Too many secrets. She smiled apologetically. "I'm grateful." "But I work better alone." The students looked disappointed. "Are you sure?" She nodded. "I'd only slow you down." They exchanged confused looks. One of them laughed. "You defeated a senior." "I don't think you're slowing anyone down." Astera simply smiled. "I still prefer working alone." After wishing them good luck, she continued deeper into the forest. The students watched her leave. "She's strange." "But impressive." --- Hidden high above... Draven had witnessed the entire conversation. "So..." "You rejected another team." He frowned thoughtfully. "Why?" Most students wanted allies. Arina Tidewell avoided them. It didn't make sense. --- The tiny dragon suddenly climbed onto Astera's shoulder. It looked behind them. Astera immediately understood. "We're being watched." Without turning around, she quietly activated a tiny reflective crystal hidden inside her bracelet. The mirror showed a distant figure moving between the trees. Draven. Astera's heartbeat quickened. Not because she feared him. Because she couldn't risk being recognized. The witch's necklace concealed her wolf's presence. It disguised her scent. But it couldn't erase memories. She lowered her hood slightly. "Not today." She quietly changed direction, disappearing into a maze of ancient ruins. By the time Draven reached the clearing... She was gone. He looked around. Nothing. Only silence. For reasons he couldn't explain... He smiled. "You really are different..." "...Arina Tidewell." --- As evening approached... The forest grew unnaturally still. Even the wind had stopped. Birds no longer sang. The tiny dragon suddenly became restless. It climbed onto Astera's head and stared toward the dark mountains. Its fur stood on end. Astera felt it too. A strange pressure spread through the Moon Forest. The mana around her seemed... Disturbed. Far above, the floating crystal screens flickered. Professor Selene frowned. "The barrier..." Professor Orion's smile disappeared. "It's starting." Dean Aurelius slowly stood. "The Moon Forest is about to awaken." Deep beneath the ancient roots... Something enormous opened its glowing eyes. A low growl echoed through the forest. Every student froze. The second day of the trial... Had just become far more dangerous.
