The moment Astera stepped through the silver portal, the voices around her vanished.
Silence.
A heavy, ancient silence.
The ground beneath her feet disappeared, and for a brief moment she felt as though she were falling through an endless sky.
Then—
Her boots touched solid stone.
She slowly opened her eyes.
The examination hall was gone.
Standing before her was an enormous labyrinth carved entirely from pale white stone. Towering walls stretched high into the darkness, their surfaces covered with glowing silver runes that pulsed like living veins. Strange blue flames floated through the air, casting shifting shadows that made the maze seem alive.
There was no ceiling.
Only a sky filled with countless stars, despite it being daytime outside.
Astera instinctively reached for her bracelet.
It was still there.
Her backpack remained on her shoulders.
The tiny dragon was safely hidden inside.
She let out a quiet breath.
"So..."
"This is the trial."
The ancient crystal's voice echoed from everywhere at once.
"Welcome, Candidate."
"The Trial of Ancient Magic does not measure strength."
"It measures the one who wields it."
"There are no enemies to defeat."
"Only yourself."
The voice faded.
Ahead of her, three stone archways slowly rose from the ground.
Above each entrance appeared glowing words.
The Path of Fear.
The Path of Wisdom.
The Path of Power.
Astera stood quietly.
Most students would probably choose Power.
Others might choose Wisdom.
Fear...
Almost no one would willingly walk toward it.
She didn't move immediately.
Instead, she crouched and examined the ground.
Tiny grooves surrounded each archway.
The runes beneath them were connected.
Like circuits.
Her fingers traced the carvings.
Interesting...
The three entrances weren't separate at all.
They were part of one magical formation.
"The choice itself..."
"...is the first test."
She stood and looked at the three paths again.
"If everyone chooses the obvious answer..."
"...then perhaps the obvious answer is wrong."
Without another moment of hesitation...
She stepped toward The Path of Fear.
The instant she crossed the archway...
The world shattered.
---
Cold chains wrapped around her wrists.
The smell of smoke filled the air.
She looked down.
She was standing once again at the edge of the Forbidden Volcano.
The Inferno Pack surrounded her.
Their faces twisted with hatred.
"You should never have been born."
"A wolf without a wolf."
"A disgrace."
"Throw her in."
Every word struck like a blade.
Astera's breathing became uneven.
She knew it wasn't real.
It couldn't be.
She had escaped.
Yet...
The pain felt real.
The fear felt real.
Then she saw him.
Draven.
Standing exactly where he had stood that day.
Expression unreadable.
Silent.
Watching.
For a heartbeat, anger surged through her.
The illusion waited.
It wanted her to attack.
To scream.
To lose control.
Instead...
Astera closed her eyes.
"This already happened."
"I cannot change the past."
When she opened them again...
The crowd had vanished.
The volcano disappeared.
The illusion dissolved into silver mist.
A quiet chime echoed through the maze.
First Trial Cleared.
---
The second corridor appeared.
Unlike the first, it was beautiful.
A peaceful house stood surrounded by flowers.
Warm light spilled through the windows.
Laughter drifted into the air.
She slowly approached.
The front door opened.
Her mother stood there.
Nerissa.
Smiling.
Exactly as Astera remembered.
"My little star."
"Come home."
Astera froze.
Every part of her wanted to run forward.
To embrace her.
To believe.
Nerissa stretched out her hand.
"You've suffered enough."
"You don't need to search anymore."
"Stay."
For several long seconds...
Astera simply looked at her.
Then her eyes moved.
No footprints.
No scent of the ocean.
No sound of waves.
Only silence.
Too perfect.
She smiled sadly.
"My mother..."
"...would never ask me to stop searching for the truth."
The illusion flickered.
"And she would never tell me to give up."
The entire house crumbled into shimmering light.
Again, the ancient chime echoed.
Second Trial Cleared.
---
The maze changed once more.
Now she stood inside a magnificent throne room.
A golden crown rested upon a crystal pedestal.
As she approached, voices surrounded her.
"You can become the strongest Alpha."
"No one will ever reject you again."
"The four packs will kneel before you."
"Take it."
"Rule them all."
Astera stared quietly at the crown.
Power.
Respect.
Everything she had once wished for.
Then...
She noticed something.
The crown's shadow.
It pointed in the wrong direction.
Her eyes narrowed.
"The light is behind me."
"The shadow should fall forward."
She smiled faintly.
"Another illusion."
Without touching the crown...
She turned away.
The throne room instantly collapsed.
The voice returned.
Third Trial Cleared.
---
The maze disappeared.
Only endless white space remained.
In its center floated a single crystal sphere.
Astera approached carefully.
The same ancient voice echoed once more.
"Why do you seek magic?"
She thought for a long time.
Not power.
Not revenge.
Not glory.
Finally...
She answered.
"I seek understanding."
"I've spent my life creating machines because machines obey reason."
"But the world doesn't."
"My past doesn't."
"My own existence doesn't."
"If magic holds the answers..."
"...then I want to learn."
Silence.
The crystal glowed brighter.
"If the truth hurts you..."
"Will you still seek it?"
Astera didn't hesitate.
"Yes."
"If the truth changes who you are?"
"Yes."
"If the truth destroys the life you know?"
She slowly looked up.
"I've already lost that life."
"So I have nothing left to fear."
For the first time...
The crystal shone with brilliant silver light.
The voice softened.
Almost as if it approved.
"Knowledge without courage is incomplete."
"Courage without wisdom is dangerous."
"You possess both."
The crystal drifted toward her.
Without thinking, Astera placed her hand upon it.
Warmth spread through her fingertips.
Ancient runes illuminated beneath her feet before fading just as quickly.
The world dissolved.
---
Astera found herself standing once more inside the Hall of Arcane Trials.
The silver portal closed behind her.
The examination hall was silent.
Every candidate had already returned.
Dozens of professors stood watching her.
Dean Aurelius slowly descended the platform.
For the first time in many years...
He bowed his head slightly to a student.
"Welcome..."
"...to the Faculty of Magic and Ancient Arts."
The hall erupted into whispers.
Flint Earthclaw, who had completed his own trial much earlier, watched her with quiet admiration.
"Interesting..."
He murmured.
"She didn't win with strength."
"She won because she understood the trial."
None of the professors knew her true identity.
None of them knew why the ancient crystal had glowed brighter for her than for any student in generations.
They only knew one thing.
The mysterious girl calling herself Ariana Tidewell had just passed one of the academy's oldest examinations in a way no one had witnessed for centuries.
And somewhere deep beneath the academy...
An ancient relic, sealed away long before the founding of the four Great Packs, pulsed once.
As if it had sensed the arrival of someone it had been waiting for.
